Rick Perry says Texas A&M is talking about SEC move

The SEC doesn't need Florida State. Half of the teams in the SEC draw national attention. It wouldn't make since to get a school in a state which you already have the flagship school. Missouri would bring another region to the conference. St. Louis and Kansas City is a lot larger market than you think.

Off the top of my head, the MO tv market is currently bigger than, AR, MS, AL, LA, SC and probably TN. The only state markets bigger in the current SEC are FL and GA. The SEC does not have a lot of big tv markets for the number of big programs. What sets the SEC apart is great athletes and truly rabid fans bases. Many of whom lack professional teams so the SEC school is their professional team.

That's why I'd rather have Virginia Tech. Speaking of rabid fan bases, their fan base is much more like other SEC fan bases. TV markets aside, I think the SEC would choose fan base over tv market because that's what has sustained them this long.

Have not looked up the facts, but the TAMU folks are saying they would be the top public academic institution in the SEC and would have the largest endowment. The SEC is the last of the BCS conferences when it comes to academics and I think folks are not seeing that and tv viewership is what drives conference affiliation. That is one of the main reasons FSU wanted in the ACC. That ACC wanted to have some legit football programs and be in the FL tv markets which are huge and also FSU wanted DESPERATELY to increase their academic profile. FSU won't give that up easily and there is probably not one major TV market in FL that does not have more UF grads than FSU grads.

Well A&M will easily have the largest endowment. They have the third largest public school endowment, only trailing Texas and Michigan. As far as academics go, they're overrating themselves slightly. They're unquestionably behind Florida and probably a touch behind Georgia, but comfortably ahead of the rest of the public schools in the SEC.
Academics will always be a factor. At the end of the day, athletics bring in millions, academics brings in billions. The Big 12 and SEC are roughly equivalent as far as academics goes, but the SEC will have a harder time getting an ACC school, not to say it won't happen.

The SEC and Big 12 are NOT on the same level academically.

Roughly they are equivalent. The average of the Big 12 schools without Texas A&M is a 85, and a third of the schools aren't even Tier 1. The SEC average is 90 with one fewer Tier 3 school. That's pretty equivalent in my book.

I am a graduate of FAMU. Not the SEC or Missouri and don't have a dog in the fight. But it is what it is. These decisions and perceptions are not made by my book or your book.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-from-the-aau-reprisal-for-leaving-the-big-12. Not even close. The AAU would not even sniff at most of the schools in the SEC.

AAU membership isn't not the sole measure of academic prestige. Kansas isn't a top 75 school and it's a member, while a number of elite schools, such as Notre Dame, are not members.. In fact, the AAU just kicked out Nebraska, whose qualifications for membership were questionable at best, for mostly political reasons. That in no means demonstrates the academic superiority of what's left of the Big 12.

Growing up catholic and going to catholic school, I have always heard of ND, but I honestly question their acadmic standing. I think most of their heft is their huge endowment and their selectivity (5-10% admittance rate). If you care to, please feel free to post some support for the SEC acadmic standing. If not, no big deal to me.

With VT they would pick up the DC market, which is huge.

Show me one team in the ACC that is better than Tennessee's women's basketball program. How many titles has the ACC won in Women's Basketball recently? Maryland won 1 a few years ago, and that is it. Duke has yet to make a splash, even Baylor and Texas A&M have managed to win titles.

In men's basketball, all the ACC has is North Carolina and Duke. The rest of the teams are very average. Every once in a while Maryland or Florida State might step it up, but it isn't as strong as you are saying.

The ACC cannot top the SEC having the top 3 teams in country. I also believe the SEC has won 3 straight national titles in baseball. If the ACC is the stronger conference in baseball, please tell when was the last time they won a national title. Florida State, Virginia, and North Carolina are some great programs, but they have yet to win a title.

1. Maryland, UNC, Duke, and Florida State are all consistently good women's basketball teams. Outside of Tennessee, who is else is consistently good in the SEC?

2. You must be crazy if you think the ACC is not consistently the strongest conference in Division 1 men's basketball.

3. Not winning a title in the CWS does not equate to a conference not being strong. Yes, the SEC has a few very strong programs but you don't see ACC teams losing to non-power schools the way Mississippi State did. Real talk. Like I said before, the ACC, from top to bottom, is a stronger conference.

But they havent won a national championship. Look and see how many baseball championships the SEC has won  .

And? When Calipari was at Memphis, the Tigers could have easily won 2 national titles but that does not equate to Conference-USA being a strong conference in basketball.

Well you can make a case against almost any school if you try hard enough. Still, you'd be hard-pressed to argue that Notre Dame and Georgetown aren't better academically than half of the schools in the AAU. I never said the SEC was a great academic conference, I said the Big 12 in its current form is no better. Your own link to US News supported that. The Big 12 has lost it's 2nd and 3rd best schools academics-wise in less than 12 months.

You measure that by championships. Like number 1 said the sec won the last three titles. I think LSU won 5 in the 90's alone.

1. Georgia, LSU, and Vanderbilt are always solid teams. Kentucky has had 2 very successful seasons as well. Florida is also going to have a breakout season. Maryland has fallen off big time since their national title a few years ago. North Carolina isn't going to be a contender until they manage to learn how to play defense. Florida State is alright, and Duke always disappears when in the big spotlight.

2. The ACC is good, but they are not head and shoulders above everyone else. Duke and UNC are great programs, but who else is consistently strong?

No matter which way you look at it, you can't say that the ACC is better than the SEC in athletics.

You're grossly overrating Alabama, they weren't even a tournament team. A&M is at least as good as Vandy.

Alabama should have been in the tournament. They got robbed big time. They return a lot of their key players and has an excellent coach. They are going to be ranked near the Top 10 this season. A&M is nowhere near as good as Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt has 3 NBA first rounders in their starting line-up. The problem with Vanderbilt is if they can get past their 1st round road block in the tournament. Again Texas A&M would be competitive, but they aren't just going to come in and take over.

Even their excellent track program would encounter some stiffer competition with Florida, Arkansas, and LSU. The track meets are definitely going to be interesting.
