Relocation of SWAC HQs; Good, Marginal, Bad for SWAC?

JROCK,

I've answered your questions already ... you're just hatin' so much you missed it.

EVERYTHING is NOT for EVERYBODY

See you still didn't respond to my comment. My questions could be easily answered by mostly any conference headquarter with competent personnel running it.

My brother, you are truly confused. No one is hating on you. "Everything is not for everyone" is the epitome of evading the questions. Stevie Wonder can see that you will not answer these eazy questions because it is not politically correct and deviates from your job description. The mismanagement of the SWAC office is world known. The crux of this problem originates from the "everything is not for everyone" syndrome. This type of ignorance breeds the same and the end result is what prevails in the SWAC office. I will end this dialogue on the note that the P.R. position for this conference apparently is a "figure head" job with the express intent to defend an abnormal amount of bafoonery. I do realize that someone has to have the unenviable task of filling this position.

Why then, didn't the leadership of New Orleans do something to maintain the conference headquarters in their city? As Bart said, the location of the offices is a minimal concern when you consider the other benefits that the conference has enjoyed since moving to Birmingham. Also, having to travel to Birmingham is a once (maybe twice) in a year occurrence for anyone participating in either of the championships. Once again, when anyone can find a city that wants the SWAC Headquarters if Birmingham's contract expires, let us know!

That's strickly a matter of opinion. I haven't seen any hard numbers to support that contension. On the other hand, apparantly the SWAC saw something in the numbers to get them to make the move Birmingham. Now rather or not it has seen a good financial move,,,,,, that's what I'm trying to find out. Just my knee-jerk from what little I know I would think so, but people bringing up this question of alleged mismanagement and fiscal irresponsibility among the SWAC brass clouds the issue.

JROCK,
My personal perspective is this ... Hopefully, with the selection of a new commissioner, the board of presidents will have an opportunity to put someone in place who can move the conference's administration ahead in all areas .... athletic administration, marketing, accountability.

I share the same beliefs as the Swac PR Man. If we are able to hire the right person who can bring ten schools together we can move this conference forward. I have said before we have some smart folks who can do anything, but when it is time to provide that support, all we get is discussions. We can take our individual concerns and make it appear that the SWAC office is run by idiots, but from what I have seen since AAMU has been in the conference these people should not be labeled as such. There are far too many issues that must be solved within each school. After AAMU joined the SWAC, I personally attended several meetings conducted by Rudy. Based on what was discussed I can come to my own conclusion of what went wrong with our former commissioner. I cannot go back to what happened prior to AAMU joining the SWAC but I am aware of some things that took place since we joined the SWAC.

I strongly believe that if we try to assist the Swac PR Man and support the SWAC Office, we can get a lot of things done. We can start by holding our own schools accountable. There are some good ideas expressed on this page, but I can see that in order for the SWAC Office to be successful, they need the revenue.

Mike raised a great point. When you can reduce overhead, that money can be used for other things. I don't think a few schools should try to dictate to the SWAC Office; all decisions should be based on the fact that it is the right thing to do.

Again, try to understand what Swac PR Man is trying to tell you. I know he can't tell it all, but there are some things that you can learn from the ADs, coaches and presidents.

Just look in your local magazine stands and you will only see something about SWAC football around late August. The Univ. of Alabama, Auburn and other SEC schools show new magazines concerning their football teams all year long. We need to generate more fan interest, give our schools more hype whether we are lying about the teams or not. We know that the money is short somewhere, but we have to start doing something else. The pre-season rankings for Div.IA football have already listed (5) SEC schools in the Top-(25). Three of them are in the top fifteen. What am trying to say is that with those rankings, the SEC has already made their money for this coming year. We just need to find another way to generate more money for the SWAC and have better management coming out of the SWAC office. With all that money being generated from bowl games going to the SEC and the revenue being spreaded around to all the schools, we probably need more HBCU's shown on major T.V. networks to generate more income. GSU and SU shouldn't be the only HBCU's shown on a major network even though I thank them for it.

Mighty Dog, Hornetswarm.

Nice job MD. Sounds like a voice of reason.

Hornetswarm hits the nail on the head. HBCU conferences must think bigger. The PWCs, as usual, have this thing down to a science, a business.

The SWAC and MEAC have a golden opportunity to take HBCU football to the next level. That Tennessee State is not in an HBCU conference is totally unacceptable. HOW IN THE UCKF DID THAT HAPPEN??!!! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!:redhot:

I have heard about how several HBCUs CONSISTANTLY outdraw, for example, Troy State University, a PWC in Alabama that has made the move to Div 1A,,, but yet HBCU conferences languish in virtual obscurity except among us grads of HBCUs??!!!!

Blacks tend to become content and live off the perverbial fat of the land and adhere to "tradition" and "the status quo" worse than the white folks who unsuccessfully attempted to maintain segregation in the 50s and 60s!!!!

How in the heck can the SWAC(or MEAC, or SIAC, or CIAA) be losing money and/or stagnate as a conference??!!

Accountibility, credibility and professionalism need to go without saying among the leaders of the HBCU conferences and schools. Other than that, maybe we need to think out of the box. If not an NCAA playoff,,, why not a SWAC/MEAC playoff were a 12 team SWAC/MEAC send 4 division winners and 2 wildcards into an HBCU Div I-AA playoff (or the top 3 teams from each conference and a wild card from each conference)? How about an HBCU Allstar game?

AND, heaven forbid, perhaps it is time for the SWAC to look at joining the NCAA playoff format.

Let me throw my ignorance in here:

All of you know how I felt about Rudy. I knew he was a crook and I told you he was a crook. I tend to call a spade a spade. Rudy made a deal with the devil to move SWAC functions to Bham. That dude was getting kickbacks from someone in that city. He sold the SWAC out to Bham, stuffed his pocket, and ran.

So why would Rudy,,

Rudy lined pockets to move the SWAC to Birmingham???

You telling me that in a place as corrupt and known for under-the-table deals as New Orleans/state of Louisiana, Rudy could not find an equivalent deal, or better, AND stay in a metro that the SWAC had been in for decades???

Yeah, there IS something rotten alright; I just dont' know if it's rotten (err, sour) grapes or really something in denmark.

That's strickly a matter of opinion. I haven't seen any hard numbers to support that contension.
Let's see, NO hosts Super Bowls every few years, Birmingham don't. I guess that's just the NFL's opinion. NO host one of the 4 big bowl games, Birmingham don't, maybe that just college football's opinion. NO has hosted heavywieght championship fights, I missed the one in Birmingham, NO is one of the major tourist attractions in the nation, NO regularly host major conventions, NO also has a pro football and basketball team, when is the last time the Stallions played. Need I go on.<br>Birmingham is only big to Alabamians. To everyone else, it is just a gas stop on the way to Atlanta.<br><br>SWAC PR Man<br> I agree with a lot of what you say, and the member schools are partly responsible.<br><br>After what Rudy did, do you blame N.O. for not being eager to dealing with him.

Well, if that's what you wanna call the 'Aints! NO just got a basketball team after the Jazz had been gone for over 20 years.

After what Rudy did, do you blame N.O. for not being eager to dealing with him.

That sounds like more of a problem with Rudy than B'ham. I do understand where you're coming form Lewie. Your hate for Alabama is like a river....IT RUNS DEEP AND WIDE!

Why don't you and some of these others who have whined since the day the SWAC office moved, market the SWAC to all of these cities you want it to move to. If you succeed, good! I'm sure the execs will pack up and move. If you are told to go to hell, (as they have already been,) then just leave the subject alone! Unless some of you have some mighty deep pockets, THE SWAC HQ'S AIN'T GOING NOWHERE NO TIME SOON!

Re: My Personal Perspective

Bartram,

Since it is your belief that you have all of the answers and sour grapes exist, take a crack at answering the questions. If you cant then go back to the drawing board. Otherwise show where something is not "rotten in Denmark."

The SWAC Headquarter being in B'Ham is not the problem. SWAC leadership in the past has been the problem. Just how in the hell can we have free stadium rental and huge crowds and not turn a profit? Someone has apparently not managed revenue properly. Has our board of presidents lack of business acumen enabled the SWAC office to falter to its current state? A full accounting should be made available to each conference member to share with constituents. Unethical behavior will persist when individuals hide information that should be made public. Why in the hell are our leaders hiding information from SWAC alums and constituents? Where has all the revenue gone? What are the expenses incurred by the conference to justify not having a bottom line profit? Are unethical practices being facilitated by our leaders? Who approves spending? Will there be checks and balances in place to stop unethical behavior and foster fiscal responsibility? If so, please convey to SWAC alums and constituents. What input does each member school have in where a conference championship is played? How in the hell can a commish have the autonomy to state what city he wants to live and headquarter housed in without member institution input? Is this simply "negro business?" Who in the HELL is the SWAC PR person and why in the shiznick dont he/she convey some of this info on the SWAC PAGE to keep everyone abreast? Can our adminstrators connect the dots and understand that athletics is a window to our institutions? Hence, if bad PR persist, enrollment can decline, prospective television contracts loss, media coverage becomes obsolete, endowments hampered and other charitable contributions diluted among other negative repercussions. I challenge anyone with the answers to these questions that is a part of the current weak establishment called the SWAC Office, board of presidents or athletic directors to answer these question......Peace

Jrock, I don't know,,

if there is a problem from the tone of the replies here. I hear general disdain for Birmingham the city. I would ask, if the SWAC was in N.O., would you et al still be riding heard on the ethics of the SWAC brass? Yes? No?

I have not seen any stories in the media in Bama accusing the SWAC of mis-management, etc, but forward me any documentation/articles you got and perhaps we can research the matter.

Is there any place where we can view the books, the business transactions of the SWAC?
