AAMU Alum said:I had older siblings who attended college, but NONE of them were members greek lettered organizations.
I knew enough about Alpha Phi Alpha from their members in Huntsville, and the activities and projects they participated in on an annual basis. Being a local, one of the first things that family and friends would ask after I started college was..."what are you going to pledge?"
After arriving at AAMU, I really didn't think I would pledge anything....that was before I had a class with a couple of Alphas my sophomore year. As I observed them, I saw that they were smart, laid back kind of guys. They were ALWAYS "bustin'" A's on exams and participated well in class. After observing the whole chapter as they went about their activities (community service and social,) I began to think that this might be the organization for me...if I do pursue a fraternity. They were always visible in positions of leadership, (SGA, class presidents, etc.) On top of all that, they could step their arses off!! And while I did step in college, I wasn't as "passionate" about it as some were/are.
After some research, and finding out that people whom I'd read and learned and heard about all my life...like Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, Thurgood Marshall, MLK (of course,) and even closer to home, the former president of Alabama A&M, Dr. Joseph Fanning Drake were members of Alpha Phi Alpha, I KNEW that it had to be the one for me!!
I haven't looked back since.

I was looking at the APA web site and became curious about some of the Men of A Phi A. Are those listed below “Pledge Graduate Chapter or Honorary Members”
I am trying to figure out where Ellington, Morgan and Douglas would have pledged.
Frederick Douglass
Duke Ellington
Garrett Augustus Morgan
Fritz Pollard

What year were you a Squire? I was on the Social Action Committee when the Squires were founded at Mathew Dickey Boys Club. I was an active participant with the squires. Mentor their first party at the Omega House. (The old one) Is Dr. Ashford still leading that group? Hows Be-Be Que, Snake in the Grass, Mike Woods, Charlie Que, Milton Patton, Jewel Chambers, etc.? The new facility looks nice.
