I was curious to find out after my years at Greek riddled Grambling? What are any of you guys/gals reason for pledging? I'm talking about reasons aside from my mother/father/brother pledged.

My Mother, father nor brothers even went to college, so you got that TWISTED right there. Im first generation.

I want to be an OMEGA cause I saw them do alot in the St. Louis community. I joined the high school group under the Upsilon Omega Chapter in St. LOUIS. I met alot of young men that shared the same ideals and visions that I had. We all became good friends and we all aspired to be OMEGAS. I did community service with the Squires and served on different committess. I won the Omega Psi Phi scholarship and apprentice award. When I got to the yard I knew I wanted to be an OMEGA MAN.

I wanted to give back to an organization that gave me so much. I chose to uphold and UPLIFT her name.

I was selected. And there is still some truth in being selected.

I had older siblings who attended college, but NONE of them were members greek lettered organizations.

I knew enough about Alpha Phi Alpha from their members in Huntsville, and the activities and projects they participated in on an annual basis. Being a local, one of the first things that family and friends would ask after I started college was..."what are you going to pledge?"

After arriving at AAMU, I really didn't think I would pledge anything....that was before I had a class with a couple of Alphas my sophomore year. As I observed them, I saw that they were smart, laid back kind of guys. They were ALWAYS "bustin'" A's on exams and participated well in class. After observing the whole chapter as they went about their activities (community service and social,) I began to think that this might be the organization for me...if I do pursue a fraternity. They were always visible in positions of leadership, (SGA, class presidents, etc.) On top of all that, they could step their arses off!! And while I did step in college, I wasn't as "passionate" about it as some were/are.

After some research, and finding out that people whom I'd read and learned and heard about all my life...like Paul Robeson, Duke Ellington, Thurgood Marshall, MLK (of course,) and even closer to home, the former president of Alabama A&M, Dr. Joseph Fanning Drake were members of Alpha Phi Alpha, I KNEW that it had to be the one for me!!

I haven't looked back since.

AAMU

I was looking at the APA web site and became curious about some of the Men of A Phi A. Are those listed below ?Pledge Graduate Chapter or Honorary Members?

I am trying to figure out where Ellington, Morgan and Douglas would have pledged.

Frederick Douglass
Duke Ellington
Garrett Augustus Morgan
Fritz Pollard

Based on info I've previously read and accessed:

Douglass was initiated POSTHUMOUSLY, as Alpha was not founded until after his death.
Fritz Pollard was initiated at Alpha Gamma Chapter (Brown University)
Duke Ellington was initiated at Alpha Zeta Chapter (Bluefield St., West Virginia)

Not sure about Garrett Morgan's place/chapter of initiation.

Sonny,
What year were you a Squire? I was on the Social Action Committee when the Squires were founded at Mathew Dickey Boys Club. I was an active participant with the squires. Mentor their first party at the Omega House. (The old one) Is Dr. Ashford still leading that group? Hows Be-Be Que, Snake in the Grass, Mike Woods, Charlie Que, Milton Patton, Jewel Chambers, etc.? The new facility looks nice.

Team, I was a Squire to the HEART!!!! Dr. Ashford is still over the Squires, but alot of the younger bruhz are helping and trying to take it over from Ashford. 2001 was the last line to cross in the old house. We have the OMEGA CENTER now on Goodfellow and Natural Bridge.
BB , Mike Woods, Charlie, Jewel (He Crabbier than some Freshman at Band Camp) are all good. Mike Woods works right around the corner from me in Chesterfield, MO.

Unfortunatey Milton Patton has move on to Omega Chapter bro. He passed around the end of Feb. bruh. That is a big blow for Omega. But we shall PERSEVERE And SEE it THROUGH!!!

ROO - Dawg.

When I arrived at UAPB, of course all Greeks stood out from the non-greeks. However, the APA chapter seem to stand out in a way to me differently. APA held the top offices in the SGA for 3 or 4 straight years. These brothers were president, vice-pres, treasury, etc. When you talked to them, they seemed like the most intelligent men on campus. They literally ran the business side of student life. They came across to me as the type of student that landed the good jobs after graduation. The community programs also appealed to me.

For me, it was kind of in the making. My mother was a dorm director at JSU when I was little (I spent a lot of time at her workplace) and one of her student-worker's boyfriend was an Alpha, so he was around Alexander West. He was real cool with me and he'd tell me things about Alpha- what they stood for, what they did in the community...he'd tell me about prominent Alpha's like MLK, W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Frederick Douglas and other men who I didn't know of just yet. Sometimes his frats would come hang out and I thought they were all cool, too (and they used to talk to some of the FINEST women! lol!). So I've always been exposed to Greek life, but it was just something about Alpha Phi Alpha that just seemed to fit who I was.

So when I actually became a student at JSU, it was the natural thing to do.....Pledge Alpha and get my degree. So when people ask me when did I decide I wanted to be an Alpha, and I tell them 'when I was 5', they say 'damn!', but it's true.

Ever since I crossed 2002, I've been trying to track MY frat brother down to let him know that I made it!

And oh yeah, they were some steppin' fools!!

He was initiated posthumously....the first and LAST one to be initiated in that manner. There are enough PROMINENT Alphas that were LIVING when they were initiated to balance things out.

That's no worse than some folks claiming members of other organizations as their own.

Frederick Douglas an alpha.........come on man. That is just too much.

How in the HELL can you MAKE someone part of your fraternity without their permission? :xeye: Hey SUGE thank God Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. does not have a honorary membership.

My reason for Pledging Omega. I used to cut the lawn of this older lady back in Mississippi. I was about 13 years old. Her grandson was in College at Rust and he is an Omega. He used to come home and mentor some of the guys in his neighborhood. Also, would tell us about the Great Fraternity of Omega Psi Phi. He would just talk about college and he was just an uplifting brother. At age 13 I didn't really know that much about fraternities and sororities. I looked up to him and I knew from then on that I wanted to be an Omega man. After I crossed, I saw the Bruh when I came home one christmas. He already knew that I had pledged. (The frat is really small). He was happy for me and said that he was glad that I sought Omega. Long story short, I knew I was going to be an Omega many years ago.

Too bad alpha sigma doesn't know that... :shh:

Bruhs...ya'll pretty much summed it up for me. But if I may add...After one informational/smoker in 1994...I had a chance to chat with one of my brother's LB's and another brother he mentored...just hearing how much Alpha changed their lives and how they made a difference in their respective communities, not to mention the many prominent brothers in Alpha, I knew the Black and Olde Gold was for me. To hear how Alpha changed and shaped and is continuing to shape not only my community, but communities accross the United States, our motto means that much more to me.

First of all...
Servants of all...
We shall transcend all!

1906-2006...100 years of Excellence.

First became aware of Omega Psi Phi my freshman year at Grambling (1974)...Gamma Gamma was off the yard shortly thereafter until the Fall of 1977. I had been told to be ready by some Bruhs who knew I was interested... worked all summer and had saved up $1100 plus dollars to cover expenses. After classes started, I went home to get my funds. Problem was Daddy had purchased shingles to remodel the house...plus told me that I would be coming home every weekend to "pledge hammer and nails". I graduated that fall (1977) and started work...Had two kids and was married by 1979 (grew to three kids by 1981). Have a good friend (a bruh) who I met in 1979 at Exxon who learned during a conversation with my wife that I had always wanted to be a Que. We followed up with conversation and now the rest is history.

As an undergrad, I always was attracted to how Bold and Bodacious the Bruhs were on campus and how they took over parties. When I submitted in 2000, my reason was changed...well, expanded. I wasn't just interested in how the Bruhs hopped, but liked how the Bruhs worked to improve the community and uplift others. So now, I try to do my part to help and (on occassion) get my "hop" on.

I just do not understand the need to tell someone why I pledged what I pledged if they are not part of my fraternity. It takes away from them searching OUT the fraternity themselves for what THEY feel they can offer.
