Predictions for SWAC Players of the Year

On offense I would have to vote for Bruce Bigg a.k.a Bruce Eugene. After coming off a solid freshman season Bruce Bigg has made Grambling a better team than last years team, which dealt with a lot of inconsistency. He's been a force this year throwing for over 3,000 yards and over 30 TDs. Bruce Bigg leads the SWAC in PASSING AVG/GAME ,TOTAL OFFENSE, and
PASS EFFICIENCY

On Defense, it's a tie between A&Ms Robert Mathis and Bama State's Antoine Hill.Both had unbelievable seasons with Mathis having already having 14.5 sacks and Hill with 10 ints. If I had to choose it would have to been done with a coin toss.

Special Teams, is a tie between two players from Bama State, David Beckford and Shawn Holmes. Beckford is perhaps the best punter in the nation today and is a NFL prospect. He's led the SWAC in punting all 4 years that he's been at ASU. Shawn Holmes is ranked third in KICK RETURN AVG and second in PUNT RETURN AVG and ALL PURPOSE YARDs.

I agree with all of your selections.

With a few more games left, JSU's Kent could put some heat on Bruce Eugene for offensive player of the year.

If Bruce struggles against Bama State and Southern, and Kent lights it up against A&M, Prairie View and Alcorn, he may have a strong case.
 



OFFENSE IS A RUNAWAY FOR EUGENE OR DOUGLAS. HANKTON HAS A CHANCE IF DOUGLAS AND EUGENE FAULTER.DEFENSE WILL GO TO CB FORM ASU . I THINK REED DERSERVES IT AND BROWN COMPLETELY CLOSES HALF OF THE FIELD OFF. BUT NUMBERS WIN AWARDS I GUESS.NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR MIGHT BE ANYBODY OF ANY TEAM.THERE IS ALOT OF NEWCOMERS.
 
Elgin Andrews has been a one man crew on JSU's defense. Mack has been as good as advertised, and you cannot over look 10 int's. I haven't seen the Bama State db play so I really can't comment. Of the corners I've seen, Chris Brown and Lenny Williams of SU are tops. I also like the job Denmark Reed has done as GSU's defensive qb.
 
BRUCE IS GETTING AWARDS ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. HE IS GETTING RECOGNITION IN THE SWAC.

BOTTOM LINE....HE IS PRODUCING AND WINNING. BRUCE WILL BE SWAC OPOTY.
 
It looks like Kent should get use to being on second team on the All SWAC team. Kent will be the greatest ALL SWAC second team selection though.

I have to go with Bruce on offense and either Mathis of the Bama St db on defense.... I would take Mathis of Andrews because Mathis attracts more attention. Mathis has more sacks than Jackson States whole team.
 
I agree on offense, but on defense I gotta go with two Delta Devils Cedric McDonald (2nd in the SWAC in tackles) and Joseph Creer (11.5 sacks) they have transformed a bismal defense last year, to the 3rd ranked defense in the SWAC.
 
I'll have to go with Bruce Bruce and Mathis. Kent is expected to do what he's doing, but Bruce was highly underestimated.
 
Bruce on offense
Andrews on defense....the dude has been player of the week 4 times. Mathis is just a situational guy...but a strong second.

Andrews is a good player, but he in the same boat with Jamaal Ware. Every coach that has played AAMU has said that Mathis is the most dominate defensive player they have recentrly seen. Hell he got a sack, fumble, fumble recover, and touchdown in one play last week. Mathis is too fast for most DL.... Did you see how fast he came from the opposite side of the field to get the tackle to stop the two point conversion that JSU tried. He has to be double and tripple teamed or HELD (for some reason it is never called) He leads all defensive linemen in sacks nationally. He has 16 sacks already. Obviously you are going to get more tackles at a LB position than a lineman position... but Andrews isnt as dominating a player as Ware or Mathis. Ware and Andrews are neck and neck with tackles (both had about 14 saturday) but Ware has way more sacks than Andrews.

Ware and Andrews might be neck and neck in tackles (though Andrews leads the conference in tackles), and Ware and Mathis may have more sacks, but you cannot overlook the fact that Andrews is 4 time DPOTW.

Eugene will be OPOTW hands down. Defensively, Mathis or Andrews would be a good choice, IMO.

I am definitely not overlooking that... but this is the SWAC, they aint never going to give AAMU a POTW in any sport... Matter of fact I wouldnt be surprised if Mathis and Ware were picked to the second team All SWAC.....

Desmond Led the conference in scoring, and steals last year and only got POTW ONCE and that was when he hit 50 against Texas So.
 
Bruce might have competition for OPOTY from within his own ranks. Tramon Douglas is putting up some very impressive numbers also. Take away his numbers and Bruce's stats are not quite so impressive. Something to think about...who won the award when Totten and Rice were at Valley?

Grambling wrapped up the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Western Division championship with its 34-21 victory over Alabama State on Saturday.

The division crown is the third consecutive for the Tigers. They will try to win their third consecutive SWAC championship next month in the conference title game in Birmingham, Ala.

The Tigers are 29-4 in their last three seasons.

They have just one remaining SWAC game - against Southern in the Bayou Classic. Grambling will play its final nonconference game of the season on Saturday in Atlanta against Morris Brown.

-- Grambling leads the SWAC in scoring offense (38.7) and passing offense (345 yards per game).

The Tigers are second in total offense (458.1 yards per game) and second in total defense (305.6 yards per game).

GSU quarterback Bruce Eugene leads the SWAC in passing yards (325.2 per game), total offense (362.8 yards per game) and passing efficiency (143.2 ranking).

-- Grambling wide receiver Tramon Douglas set a school single-season receiving yardage record. He has 1,272 yards receiving this season. ( Tramon did not play in the A&M game so his numbers have come in 8 games. He's averaging close to 8 catches per game, 159 yds per game, and has several multiple touchdown games.)

Dude, quit your beyotchn. If they deserve POTW, they will get it. The fact is Andrews does everything every week...period. Mathis is nice, but to deny Andrews his just due two years in a row would not be right.
 
I still don't see how ANtoine Hill didn't get it in the first week of the season when he had 3ints.
