Poor Clock Management By Coaches Cost ASU

I went to a JUCO football game Thursday night between the #4 (visiting) and #5 JUCOs in the country. #4 blew a 34-14 halftime lead and lead only 37-30 with about 55 seconds on the clock, facing 3rd and 12. They RAN the ball, let the clock tick all the way down and then called timeout. Then they punted to the opponent who had to go about 70 yards in about 26 seconds. Couldn't do it.

If I were coaching Bama State, I wouldn't have run the ball. I would have had my QB take a knee. I wouldn't even chance a fumbled handoff or by the RB. Spin the clock and punt. Give the opponent as little time as possible to score. Apparently, SU needed every bit of that time to score. Coe bungled that one.

Can anybody explain the timeout that ASU player called with none left, then the officials huddle up and said that they actually called timeout after the had already said timeout ASU?

KEYS to the game:

a. Poor clock management by ASU
b. SU change at cornerback
c. Inability of ASU to stop the SU passing game, especially the big plays.

Rematch in Birmingham!

It's called incompetence, Spots. If a team calls a timeout they don't have, it's a delay of game penalty. 5 yard penalty, which is bogus. I think they should run 10 seconds off the clock (on the offense) or assess a 15 yard penalty (on the defense) for that.

bottom line, we should have never been passing that ball on 3rd down. Dumb decision!

and the refs did a poor job all night long of dealing with the clock issue. I never did hear the PA announcer say that the clock was malfunctioning. With the time showing some of the time, it just really caused confusion for most of the fans. The refs would tell the sidelines how much time remained after each play. (but lots of times, that didnt coincide with what the clock was showing)

oh well, congrats SU

Uhhh Mighty Horny,

I'll be willing to bet that Johnny Cole, wouldn't have passed on 3rd down! :saw:

Time management lost the MCC last year for Bama State. I sure hope you guys don't learn how to manage the clock before the MCC. :D

i believe that we are #1 in the east and we aint giving that up:D...but you can keep reppin ASU along with the others! its all gravy train...

It is anybody championship to win in the east and west. Bama State will be a load for anyone. IMHO, here is the long and short of it. Bama State has a potent offense. They are not the best pass defense team. If you can pass the ball and outscore them you have a shot. Their offensive line is very strong, very well conditioned and seem to get stronger as the game progresses. Their RB must be contained for 60 minutes and if you lose focus they will hurt you bad. You cannot arm tackle these guys or they will make you look "high schoolish." They have very tall receivers that know how to use their body to sheild off defenders. I am interesting in their game against JSU next week. That should really be an interesting match up. We are about to find out what kind of team JSU really has. I don't have a preference for any team in the east TRU3000. May the best team win.

We just got back from the game. Great job by SU's football and the Nation for staying in the game till the end.

ASU has some cheatin officials working their clock in the Crampton Bowl. The first half wound down to 0:00 and it stayed that way for about 10 minutes while ASU drove down the field and scored. I remember in the 4th when there was 4:15 left, some JSU and SU fans started talking and mingling for abotu 30 seconds, we looked up at the clock and it said 1:15. We were like, "Da helll?" lol

Anyway, great football game!

...Carry On..

I hate to say this but they were playing big time games with the time on S.U. Coach Richardson finally walked on the field in the 4th QT. and stopped the game raising "holy hell." As a matter of fact the other coaches had to refrain him. Everyone in the stands were raising holy hell. One minute they would say the time is being kept on the field and next minute the PA announcer would contends the time is right. It got so bad until folks in the stands behind S.U. got the players and coach attention about the game clock time. I have never seen anything like it.

(To those that doubt me I know what I SAW!!! The operative word is SAW)

I think the refs have made a conscious effort to cut down on the flags and they are not calling holds anymore. Last year ASU received more that they fair share of holds and other teams received this penaly a lot also. This year I am not hearing this call and Gods knows I saw a lot of holding going on in this game; and sometimes at crucial points. Has anyone else noticed this occurrence. :p

I did hear ole boy say before the game "The official time at Cramton Bowl is kept on the field."

Which leads me to another question......

Do you think y'all can get any more of a hillbilly announcing y'all's games? I mean, damm.....

I also heard the PA anouncer say the "the time on the clock is now right."

Yeah, right before halftime. I took it to mean that after it was wrong before it was right at that point. He should've announced later when it started messing up again.

Also, talking to some of the coaches after the game.....the officials refused to tell the SU staff how much time was officially left. Coach A would ask the official and he'd say he told Coach B. Coach A asks Coach B and he says they ain't told him shat. :redhot:

Thats why MD is guaranteeing a win but we got sumthin for um.

Poor Clock management, the third down debacle and that dayum prevent defense.....that isht cost us the game against GSU last year..Prevent Defense will prevent your azz from winning

The PA guy made an announcement about the clock at the very beginning of the game. I remember because I was just sitting down and I looked at the clock and wondered what he was talking about. Little did I know.

At one point before halftime the PA guys says, "The time on the scoreboard is correct." Two seconds later we had lost a minute on the clock. The reason why there is 'suspicion' is because ASU had the ball right before half time and the 2nd quarter didn't end until ASU had scored. The band had been standing behing the endzone for five minutes. There was no time 'showing on the clock', but those of us in the stands had no clue how much time was REALLY left. One minute it said 1:14, the next it said 00. It would lose seconds or minutes based on who had the ball and where they were on the field.

Bottom line, there should have been better communication. There was too much confusion. If time is being kept on the field, that time should have been communicated to those folks in the press box who in turn should have announced the correct time. This wouldn't happen in an NFL game. Regardless of the fact that 'both' teams had to deal with the clock issue, it always seemed to benefit ASU. Except at the end of the game... :D

And I just thought it was crazy that the clock worked fine during halftime...no problems counting down from 20:00, but I guess counting down from 15:00 was too much to handle.

ANYWAY...GREAT GAME!! :jump: I broke my pom-pom I was shaking it so hard...

I'm sholl glad SU won the game. God forbid the game would have ended with SU driving for the winning score and the Refs say the game is over. I couldn't imagine that happening to anyone in an important game and the clock mysteriously goes out after working perfectly during the pre-game warmups.

This game was lost by ASU after SU closed the game to 41-35. After the celebration penalty, we had a helluva ko return. With apprx. 4 mins left in the game instead of us running the ball - which we were able to do in the second half - we threw 3 straight passes that took less than 30 seconds off the clock.

THANK YOU MAJIKSITY ! ! ! !

I agree 100% ! ! !

It's not often that you score 41 points and can blame the OFFENSIVE coaches for losing the game, but that is precisely what happend here. Who the "L" ever called those three pass plays on that series needs to have his head examined. At that particular time, we needed the clock to run more than we needed points. We were ahead by six points, just run the dayum ball ! ! !

Man... I dont care what nobody says.... ASU lost because their clock man CHEATED the whole damn game.... ESPECIALLY at the end of the second quarter... I was sitting by some ASU alumni and they were just laughing knowing the clock operator was cheating...... They would take 5 minutes off... then add time back when ASU got the ball...... then it would go to 15 minutes..... then it would go to 00 ....... but it mysteriously worked PERFECT during halftime....... then it sta rted right back in the second half... After SU scored the touchdown to bring the lead down to 6... the clock went from a lil over 4 minutes down to 1:50 seconds.... the whole SU part of the stadium was actin a fool.... then the announcer came on the intercome a saying "the time on the clock is the correct time reamaining in the game"..... I was pullin for my ghetto cousins the whole game into I saw that the clock man was playin games.

It was NO Defense this game... ASU's lil running back BULLDOZED a SU defender (funniest play of the game) and then ran a touchdown...... ASU should have gone to that TALL receier all day, he was KILLING SU... Both teams need dbs.... ASU "OUTPLAYED SU.... but SU had more heart at the end when it counted...... ASU has a nice balanced offense.... and 2 workhorse running backs. Great game.

EXACTLY.... NOBODY knew how much time was left.... Funny how the clock went to 00 RIGHT after ASU scored before the half lol.... ASU fans were having a field day right below me... saying "SU cheats all the time, so its our time now"

He is not joking. THEY did not see their own clock shennanigans against JSU in '98 as wrong. Bama State needs to just learn how to finish the deal. When the other team gets close to winning, end the damn game right then.

ummm Dahill,
THe official time is not kept on the clock. It's kept on the field. The problem was that once the clock started malfunctioning, the PA announcer should have announced it again that the time is kept on the field. They should have just turned the time portion of the clock completely off, instead of trying to get it to work. Because it would work sporadically, then go out again. That's where the confusion was. (at least for the fans)
but the whole while, the time was being kept on the field.

Robber & Get Ready,

Quit lying....S.U. just beat you all down for 5 years in a row including 98. It is just sad that someone would say "finish the deal" when referring to cheating.
