Poor Clock Management By Coaches Cost ASU

ASU has the best (top 2 atleast) running game in the SWAC; why not try to run time off the clock on 3rd and 12 in the 4th Qtr with approximately 58 seconds to go and the other team has no timeouts. Instead of giving the other team 52 seconds to score from around mid-field, the other team would have had maybe 30 seconds to try and score. The conditions were right for ASU to utilize their running game. ASU had moved the ball pretty good all night on the ground when they utilized the running game. ASU uses two backs, one (Williams is probably leading the SWAC in rushing) and Randolph who is a big brusing back. ASU should have ran the the ball on 3rd and 12 with 58 seconds and they should have ran the ball pretty much the whole 4th considering they had a two TD lead and the starting QB was hurt and was not in the game part of that time. Utilize the running game. The game clock was on our side.

Poor coaching! I bet Coach Pete knows better.

that's what I was saying, I think there was maybe 1:17 remaining when your coach decided to pass the ball on 3rd down. Coaching lost this game period.

I see your point, but on the other hand if you had gotten the first down on the passing play, Game Over. Plus that illegal procedure call didn't help. Before then, I think your coach was going to run the ball.

Tough call either way, but I would have gone with the running play.

Regards.

I see logic in what they did. THey went for the the kill. If they make a first down, ball game over, we were going to get it with time left anyway. We finally shut down the run in the fourth quarter, so running for 13 yards was unlikely.

There is no possible reason for passing that ball on 3rd down with Southern having no timeouts.
Absolutely none! :smh: But thanks just the same coach Coe.:gift:

Well I'm glad somebody can, because I can't. Actually, I thought they should have gone to the running game more earlier in the second have anyway. They were up by 20 late in the 3rd qtr, at that point they're playing the clock moreso than playing us. With the rushing attack they have (they drove up the field on their last TD drive with Jackson out the game by running), they should have just pounded away for the rest of the game. But late in the game, especially with Southern having no timeouts left, if they just had ran the ball, they could have run 30-35 seconds off the clock. We scored with 2 seconds left, if they had run the ball, we probably would have run out of time.

At several points, time mysteriously dissappeared off the clock, so I am not sure just sitting on the ball would have worked. What worked for them was mixing the run and the pass. They continued to do what worked. In the last 10 minutes of thegame we shut down thier running game.

I don't disagree with the success they had mixing run and pass. But you have to tailor your offense to fit the situation. Late in the game with a sizeable lead, you're playing the clock as well as your opponent, probably moreso. Yes we shut down their running game late, but we shut down their offense late in general as well. The extra time we gained from their incompletions gave us just enough time to come back and win. If they had just pounded the ball, they probably could have milked the clock and held on for the victory. Granted that assumes everything else holds true, and their defense has a big role in this as well. There's no excuse in giving up a 31 yard TD with 2 seconds left. But their coaching decisions put them in a position to give up the late TD.

If it's under 1:15 on the clock in the 4th and it's 3rd-n-90, you still run the ball. I don't care if the other team KNOWS you are going to run it. This is not a situation of keeping the defense guessing. This is a matter of getting that clock down to 0:00 as best as possible. Dumb decision.

IMHO, they lost because thier DB got torched a few times to many. The only reason their was only 0:02 seconds left is because of all the time they cheated off the clock.

I hate to say this but they were playing big time games with the time on S.U. Coach Richardson finally walked on the field in the 4th QT. and stopped the game raising "holy hell." As a matter of fact the other coaches had to refrain him. Everyone in the stands were raising holy hell. One minute they would say the time is being kept on the field and next minute the PA announcer would contends the time is right. It got so bad until folks in the stands behind S.U. got the players and coach attention about the game clock time. I have never seen anything like it.

Both teams had to deal with the clock issues, you can't control that. What you can control is how you manage the game late with the lead. I agree, their defense late in the game sold them out, but their defense was in that position due to poor coaching.

I simply believe that Bama State defense could not stop S.U. passing attack. They finally started throwing the ball more north. You could feel in the stands that if S.U. had the ball last they would win.

Thats true too, but we don't score that last TD without those 30-35 seconds that were saved by ASU passing on 3rd and 12.

They sure as hell would have said time expired if that pass was not thrown. I would not be suprised however if Bama State coach wasn't confused about the time too. It was that bad.

Jrock - glad you made it home safely

The clock going in and out affected both teams - this was not some Bama St "thing" to try and throw SU off, it malfunctioned and the REFS lost control by not handling the situations properly.

SU defense did not shut down ASU offense late in the game - ASU shut down their own offense - by the same token when SU struggled on offense, it was not anything special ASU did - it was a lack of execution on SU part.

This game was lost by ASU after SU closed the game to 41-35. After the celebration penalty, we had a helluva ko return. With apprx. 4 mins left in the game instead of us running the ball - which we were able to do in the second half - we threw 3 straight passes that took less than 30 seconds off the clock. People were making a big deal about the Int thrown by the punter on 4th down - but actually the SU DB should have knocked the ball down - would have had better field position - so the int actually served as a punt. BUT we didnt force SU to think about having to use their TO, the incomplete passes thrown on those 3 downs was to complete turning point in the game.

See you guys in Bham - it was a good game and a great atmosphere (once the sun went down).

By the way, ESPN website is reporting only 11,904 at the game - anyone that attended tell me how many you think were there - it sure looked to be more than 11k to me.

I think you have a fair and good analysis. However, one thing though; you must have impathy for this time situation from a visiting team that is behind when this clock thing is happening and they are fighting to get back in the game and win it. So our lens may be a tad different.

Good post majiksity, the SportsNetwork.com is reporting 17,364, perhaps somebody who was at the game can assess if that seems accurate. I don't think the clock can be brought into it here, the clock was malfunctioning early in the first half when the game was close.

I believe it is close. Bama State side extended to half of the seating in the endzone. Southern side was filled but I notice the seating space among people was not as compact (close together) as on the home. But our side from goal line to goal line was relatively full. Our side of the endzone was not nearly full like Bama States. Me and the fellow on side of me were guessing about 20K. BTW, a few of Bama State fans were on S.U. side. Bama State had house tonight. But, S.U. represented well.

JN99 I think the 17K is closer to it and you are correct again about the clock, it was messing up in the first half - but it worked fine during halftime - then it didnt move on the kick off. Im still sick though :redhot:

ASU had the game won! you would think COE would have made a better decision with 1:17 left on the clock! i know the ASU fans were sittin there like :upset: ....COE obviously didnt have revenge on his mind! you cant make decisions like that when SU has the momentum

I believe that S.U. and ASU will see one another again. I believe that both teams will take care of business.

Co-sign. Hopefully SU turns the corner with this win, and even in defeat, Alabama State is still the class of the East.
