Okay GR, I'll bite here. Hughes is the better coach.
However, how can that be truthful and logical? In 2000, we had talent coming off the 1999 championship season, right? A few coaching mistakes and some injuries messed over us that year and we ended 6-5 and beat both participants in the SCG.
Following me so far. Hughes, on the other hand, had superior talent like Taylor, Story, McLaurin, and some studs on defense. He was able to defeat us 13-10. He said he was SO happy to finally beat Southern because (quote) HE was tired of feeling like Southern's stepchild. However, with the talent he had and everything else, why did Alabama A&M make it to Birmingham instead of the super-talented Tigers? Y'all finished 7-4, right?
Move the last season. Southern loses some talent at running back and Hayes goes down early. Defense has some studs back there with Chapman, L. Williams, and Landry, but the newness of co defensive coordinators and shoddy game-plans does them in along with a ineffective running game. However, Coach Richardson patches together a group that while shamed in Tulane and Northwestern St. defeats, regroups to finish the season on a 7-2 roll, defeating the eventual Eastern Division champs (32-9) and just losing to the Western Division Champs (30-20). Of course, Jackson State and Hughes get another one that, frankly, our coahing staff gives away in bad management techniques (21-24).
However, in Jackson last year, the receiving core returns, but with a new, and your opinion, better leader in the QB slot. The defense returns a lot too, but the focus seems to be on offense. Your defense finishes last in the league and your QB throws 21 interceptions for lack of a running game and total dependence on the youngster Kent. Hughes has the horses, but once again, he finishes 7-4 with losses to (ECC) Alabama State, Tennessee State, (SWAC) Grambling, and North Carolina A&T. There were no huge losses before last season like this season for JSU, sans the previous QB (Washington?) and maybe a few others?
So, in conclusion, Hughes had enormously better talent in 2001 and finished with the same record as Richardson.
The only thing you are basing your point on seems to be what each did against each other. Otherwise, your whole point of Hughes being better has no merit man.
