My blind SWAC Picks

I don't know a whole helluva lot about SWAC teams this year except for Grambling because I saw them on ESPN and ASU because I saw them in person this weekend so here it goes, as best as I can figga it...

UAPB over MVSU: The last time I checked UAPB was a decent running team (not a decent team, a decent running team) and MVSU just hired their passing legend Willie Totten as their head coach so I'm ASSUMING he'll make them a wild passing team (correct me if I'm wrong). In my book, paper covers rock, scissors cut paper, rock beats scissors and run beats pass. Gimme UAPB.

Southern over Prairie View: Because I'm sober.

Grambling over Alcorn State: Despite the final score I was impressed with Grams talent level in that SJSU game. They looked like they could have won with a better strategy. I know nothing about Alcorn this year so this pick is no knock on them. I'm just going with what I know. The fat QB can throw even with his bad mechanics and panicking under pressure. Gimme Gram.

N Carolina A&T over Jackson State: From what I'm seeing JSU is making the transition from one of those wild passing squads to a run oriented thing. I'm not sure their personnel is suited to that. A&T, on the other hand, has been running for years and the new coach runs too. Also, they've beaten JSU what 2 or 3 times in a row. Why switch up now? A&T.

Tennessee State vs Alabama A&M: Last week I would have picked AAMU in this one without much thought but after seeing what the Tigers did to SCSU I had to pause. But then I thought about the skill players SCSU lost and the fact that I thought they would be overrated this season anyway and I started leaning right back in the same direction. I saw AAMU against this team last year and thought they looked good defensively. If the coach has spiced up the O any they should be alright.

Bethune-Cookman vs Alabama State: I know the ASU fans are excited about beating FAMU and are stoked for this one BUT, I live in Detroit and I saw that game. Those weren't your daddy's Rattlers y'all beat. That snake team is going to take more beatings this year. I thought ASU looked surprisingly solid considering all their recent problems but still, they were not spectacular (except for that first punt return for a TD where the dude spun and maintained balance! That was NICE!). From what I saw the D could have been had and the O was average. Take away the special teams points and FAMU wins a boring game. BCC is going to win this one convincingly.

Howard over Texas Southern: I went to Howard. WHAT ELSE AM I GONNA SAY! But I do believe it too. Love the new coach!

The game is winnable (by PV). We'd have to bring our A+++++ game and SU would have to bring their F+++++++ game. I seriously doubt that would occur.

Strange things happen though. :)

Trust me. That'll still get SU by. It would have to be an F++++++++++ game by SU in order for us to compete. We're still too young and still not ready.

thegooddoctor's week #2 picks

MVSU vs APB - Look for the Delta Devils to regroup on the road at Pine Bluff. Devils had a bad start last week against the Jags. The boys from Bill Clinton's home state are reeling and won't rebound soon. Cory Weaver will be the difference. Delta Devils will win this one.

NCA&T vs JSU - Look for the Aggies to continue their mastery over the Blue Bengals. A&T can run that ball and play solid defense. JSU still learning thier offense. Not a good time to be learning a new offense. Boys from Jacktown lost to A&T twice with a wide open offense. One good tailback just won't cut it Saturday. Bell era starts 0-2.

Howard at Texas Southern - The Bisons will lose this one. Last week the Tigers ran on PVU, look for Orlando to put the ball in the air against the buffalo soldiers. Another SWAC victory over the MEac:cool:

Alabama State vs BCC - This week we'll see if the Hornets are still flying high or will be brought back down to earth. Gut feeling, BCC will not have a picknic playing somebody their own size. Gut feeling Hornets sting the MEac again.

Tennessee State vs AA&M - Bulldogs still playing good defense. Offense will improve this week. Jones crew will bounce back this week.

SU vs PVU - Jags to have a let down against the Panthers. Still too much talent for the Panthers to pull the upset. If TSU could run the Panthers into the ground look for Miller & Peoples each to run for 100. Jags go to Vegas undefeated.

GSU vs Alcorn - Tigers are hurting from San Jose game. Doug has a solid defense, but that one dimensional offense just won't cut it.
Plus the tigers have lost Coach Roach. If the Braves are back, Saturday will see the boys from Louisiana Normal College undergo a scalping on the reservation. Braves are at home, free from injury, have good coaching, but. What the hell, Braves in a close one.

last week record: 4 - 2
