Melvin Spears one of the finalist for the FAMU Head Coaching Job

Hey blue, you think Odumbs is the best coach SU could've hired? This is not a trick question.

Only time will tell. Was he my first choice?

No..but he has my unconditional support

This list is very uninspiring. Comegy is heads and shoulders above that group.

I think Eason and Holmes are good choices especially when you look at the HBCU landscape. The difference in the two is 20 years and one of them is offensive minded and the other is a defensive coach.

The same Comegy that admitted he didn't prepare for Delta State when he lost the first matchup? No thanks

That is not what Comegy said. Comegy said he was unable to get game film on DSU. Whether he tried or not is another story. The other allegation was that MS Valley coaches gave DSU film on Jackson State. Either way, we lost but we kicked their azz the second time around.

As for Comegy applying, the JSU fans knew about the FAMU situation. We know there were some talks. However, it was our understanding that FAMU reached out to him to see if he was interested. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't but when I read the paper this morning, it listed several people who applied. Comegy's name was not listed among those who did not get an interview. I think if Comegy had applied, his name would have been listed among the group. Comegy is not dumb. He has gone 8-3, 9-2 and 7-5 the last three years in Jackson with a SCG appearance and next season, his contract ends next season and JSU is in no hurry to extend it. I don't think he would have been dumb enough to actually APPLY for the job at FAMU without assurances that the job was his. If the JSU fans saw his name in the paper as applying for the FAMU job, he would ruin his relationship with those who are happy with him. I'm sure he handled this the right way with some "under the table" discussions.

As for APR, that was not all Comegy's fault which is one reason why he still has a job. Really it wasn't his fault at all. The people at fault have been fired and the JSU athletic dept is in great shape. In fact, our entire university is in great shape.

Ask your AD and he should tell you. A Coach with a job cannot afford to put his name out there without having some assurance that he is going to be hired.

LOL.. i just typed that. I am sure FAMU was in talks with several head coaches. I am sure Jones and Comegy were on their list. If I were doing a search, I would certainly contact them especially if my list of applicants is not looking to impressive.

Not only did he apply, he called to check on the status. This isn't the smack page and I don't have to lie. Comegy used the Billy Joe recruiting model. Coming in and getting rid of players and signing a million people. We warned you he would do that before he was hired and how it would cause issues in today's environment. He is just learning how to recruit like a division one NCAA coach. Transfers will always be a portion of the FCS model, but you have to be able to recruit and coach up high school talent. What kept Billy Joe out of that trap where the assistants he initially had. Many with prior ties to FAMU and the high school pipeline. Although almost all the QBs were transfers except Quinn Gray, the receivers and RBs etc were high school talent signed from
Central and South FL. When those assistants left, Joe abandoned the high schools. Signing a roster full of JUCOs from San Jacinta CC and any other Cali Juco he could find. That is what really cost him his job. To the point that when the next coach and Taylor were hired, you had high school coaches and admins saying in the paper they had not seen a FAMU football coach in years. And some of these coaches and principals are FAMU grads. Comegy is in that same coaching tree and used the same methodology. Damn the revisionist history. We called it when you hired him (ask Robber) and he signed like 50 folks in his first class.

Holmes has done well recruiting the Big Bend area and the high school coaches love him. I believe he will surround himself with a strong staff and many from his NFL days have offered to assist him and want to see him succeed. He also understands the expectations of the FAMU faithful.

If he coaches like he plays the game, you all are in for some good times.

On all search committees you will have a couple of members who will be concerned about salaries. Things like Headcoach $220,000, then the OC and DC NLT $100,000, and other assistants $65,000. Then you deducts scholarships, travel and on and on. Schools with big bucks can go out and offer 3 millions or more and still cannot buy who they want. Most of these high paid coaches are really failures, and go back to assistant job. But if they got paid maybe they will start selling insurance. Everybody on staff is not coaching, even some headcoaches, but we take a chance on their records. Good Luck.

BTW, AAMU is the best job in the SWAC. You have coaches who will leave their current job to take AAMU. If you don't believe me ask your coach about what I just stated. Coaches do talk and they know. It is the fans that are confused. BTW AJ is going into his 11 year I believe.
