Members of the Louisiana Leadership Institute All Star Band will take a taste of Louisiana musical flavor to the 2007 Tournament of Roses.

On Monday they?ll be marching, sounding their familiar notes, twirling sticks, creating letters and numbers, and bringing more of the crowd-pleasing maneuvers and sounds that have made them unique and often compared to Southern University?s marching band.

?We?re bringing Louisiana to California,? said clarinet player Melinda Victor, 17, of Alexandria High School.

The Rose Parade will air at 10 a.m. Monday on NBC, ABC, HGTV and The Travel Channel.

Band members said they can?t reveal much about their performance.

?We?re going to keep it a surprise,? said Javon Carter, 17, baritone section leader and a student at Dutchtown High School.

However, past accomplishments offer hints.

The 150-member band snatched the championship in 2005 in the Home Depot/VH1 Battle of the High School Marching Bands competition in Los Angeles. They won $10,000 and an invitation to perform in the Rose Parade, said state Sen. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, founder and sponsor of the Louisiana Leadership Institute.

?Never in my life did I think I?d be marching in the Rose Parade, and here I am,? Carter said.

The band operates as a team of advanced level teenage musicians who focus on strong academics, discipline and precision. Students travel in the institute?s motor coaches to out-of-state competitions. Band uniforms and larger instruments are also provided by the institute, and they are led by former Southern University band director Isaac Greggs.

I know some folks will accuse me of being biased since "Doc" is working with this band, but they just turned the Rose Parade out!

They actually got two standing ovations.....

I actually thought the song selections, the "block marching" and the "2007" that they spelled out made the band stand out.

One commentator said, "I bet those young ladies are glad the weather is nice today." I think he said that because those girls were the first,
and possibly only girls with so little clothing on. I had to remember that they were high schoolers. Still though, nice job LLI!!!

One announcer simply said, "Legs!!!"

When I heard the drum cadence...I was like "That sounds like Southern. Hey, that looks like Southern. Hey, that looks like Dr. Greggs. Oh Shiiiit.....it's BABY SOUTHERN!!!!" Yea, they turned it out. They got the most camera time out of all of the bands I've seen. PROPS to Dr. Greggs still doing his thing. He truly is gifted because he had those kids looking and sounding like Southern. The Human Jukebox is Dr Greggs I see.
