JSU vs. SU: The Atmosphere That Use To Be Present at Nearly ALL HBCU Games.

A lot of that could be based on the fact that Coach Rob and Billy Joe (when he was at FAMU) really didn't care a lot for each other. Coach Rob accused Billy Joe of not exchanging game film. Billy Joe accused Coach Rob of of sending "spies" to his practices.

Yes, I remember that. :emlaugh: However, several of those match ups that pre-dated Billy Joe were epic and a couple if memory serves me correctly in the Orange Blossom Classic were battles for Black College Football Supremacy and could have very well been the best college football teams in the country (pre-desegregation).

exactly why does this game need to be seen on National tv?

does the commissioner get to decide which games are on national tv?

The conference's games with the highest attendance are shown on national tv. Does the commissioner get credit for that?

Here he go. Nobody cares about that meaningless classic. If anything the Comm needs to work as hard as possible to get
that horrible game off the air. Ill never forget the 1999 MCC...thats still the worst game Ive ever seen in my life. That includes
highschool jr high and PopWarner

I attended one. With a championship at stake. My question still remains.

C'mon MH. It is a what Black College Football is all about without it being dubbed a "Classic" or on some holiday weekend. It is an intense rivalry between the two biggest HBCU fan bases, the tailgating, two schools in border states in their respective capital cities. A lot of history, two great and well known bands who add to the intensity. It is just different. No promotion needed.

The 90s took it to another level with both teams usually vying for the SWAC Championship. Which added more fuel to the fire.

I guess Rob and Pete must have talked about this. Pete didn't like Billy Joe either and vice versa. Pete accused him of the same isht. I never seen Pete dislike a coach that much........well he didn't like Shine either.

 :emlaugh:
(Pete REEEAAALLLLYYYY didn't like Billy Joe; That's one man that could get under mild mannered Dean Pete's nerves) :emlaugh:

Wasn't there a thread on here that forced Billy Joe to run up the score back in '99

This game should be played in Memorial every year. The SU campus is a horrible place to hold this game. We need to work together to move this game to Jackson every year. TC had the right idea.

How about having the game in New Orleans every year? Tulane is moving out of the Super Dome.

It's BS like this that has destroyed the sports board......:smh:

Yeah, he could be heard in the press box saying air it out, air it out, when it was on a few minutes left in the game. Which is why you can't compare what Urban did to what Billy Joe did. Billy was trying intentionally to send a message to Pete. He wanted another TD to break 70 and was pissed that he didn't accomplish that.

And a thread how Billy Joe damn near destroyed FAMU's program. Knowing Billy Joe, he probably got ex-cons to travel with him to Louisiana. It seems like the band did it every year.

You are correct about the 90's adding fuel to the fire. It was wild for a long time though. I vaguely remember around 1979 about 55,000 people showed up in Jackson Memorial. :emlaugh:

No problem MH. I am on the high road bruh!

Unlike others, I am not saying our game should be on TV instead of other SWAC games. I am saying it is such a good atmosphere and normally very competitive and exciting games that it should be show cased on TV and the SWAC office should try to help get this game showcased. One of the few games the crowd is going to be into the game and not just all the other hoopla going on.

Billy Joe had demons from when Southern U beat him twice in the same season in Atlanta. The first at the Budweiser Classic and the 2nd time on ESPN for the BCF National Championship. Both games were played in the Georgia Dome.

Hell, 79, 81 and 83 all were crowded. I was at all three. Albeit I was sitting on the wrong side of the fence then. LOL.

85 and 87 my Juke years going to Jackson it was large crowds. SU usually rolled into that game with a real good record only to take an arse whooping. Normally it was JSU's homecoming so it was already going to be hyped. I think it was after I was gone from SU that it started getting intense. In 89, Kimble went up to Jackson and beat SU and the Jukebox clowned as normal. Spoiled their homecoming and broke their SWAC winning streak. Then it was on after that. Pete just added insult to injury when he came in 93 and continued winning in Jackson and started winning SWAC titles. So that's when it got all hostile. LOL. The Jag Nation was born with it's slogan and the crowds got bigger every time we went to Memorial after 93. This game is just special. Bottom line.

Oh I remember. I was at both of those games against FAMU. Their current head coach Earl Holmes was on that team.

I was fortunate enough to be at both of those games too. We scored 52 in that first match up but it had nothing to do with running up the scores......

I particularly remember that 83 game because I rolled up that Friday and partied the entire weekend starting Friday night. Couldn't even tell you these days what clubs I went to. :emlaugh: I do remember at S.U. in 1978 they sold out of tickets and then decided to sell standing room only tickets that Saturday morning, it was at least 10 of me and my peeps on the yard for that game. :emlaugh:

Wait what?

And the Marching 100 only made one trip to Mumford since the 80s...that was the 2000 match-up

I remember in 1995 riding the Alumni Bus from New Orleans to Jackson. You talking about had a ball. But we loss the game 16-14 that year and I believe that was our only loss. I raised so much hell on the way back until I couldn't talk by the time we got back to New Orleans. :emlaugh: Those were the days! :emlaugh:
