JSU vs. SU: The Atmosphere That Use To Be Present at Nearly ALL HBCU Games.

BRAVEHEART123

The Clown Prince of Crime
The atmosphere of a JSU vs. SU is like no other. I myself have caught a few JSU vs. SU games, the last one being in 2010: The Epic Shootout. The two teams could be below .500 but the atmosphere is still there. What makes this rivalry so great?......Both come into the game with their chest out and believe they stand an equal chance of winning no matter the record. My, how things remain the same...yet they change.

If there is one thing I have always admired about SU and JSU is their brashness. Talkin' shit as some call it. I remember a time when nearly all HBCU games were like that. Hell, even the coaches would get caught in the trash-talking. Now in 2013, most HBCU games have lost their excitement. The brashness of both SU and JSU Alumni and supporters in itself draws excitement to the game.

On the one hand, you can blame the coaching antics of Nick Saban and Rod Broadway. Both of these coaches play "boring" football but they win. However, they are not brash and prefer not to trash talk other teams. But what good is a win of you don't feel the passion of the game associated with the team? What happens when expect to win too much? Brashness was a part of HBCU Football that needs to be re-established. You can play boring football and still be brash in doing it. We need to be like SU vs. JSU and talk trash to each other. And talk trash about EVERY team. Don't just talk trash about a rival. Talking trash can be a marketing tool HBCUs can and should utilize. Just open your mouth.

You cannot...

The thing that makes the SU/JSU rivalry so edgy is that it isn't split between family lines like FAMU/BCU, SU/GSU, or ASU/AAMU...they just friggin' hate each other

Those are the best rivalries sort of like how FAMU and SU used to be

Plus, it's a true home-and-home rivalry, not some god-awful classic with promoters, tomfoolery and whatnot. It stands alone. I told someone last night that all you have to say is Southern playing Jackson and folks eyes get big and they nod their heads. I pray the Jackson-Southern games are always played in Mumford and Memorial.

That's also what I miss from the FAMU-SU series. The games were much better at Mumford and Bragg.

And yet, for some reason, the SWAC can't seem to get this to be one of the ESPNU/ESPN3 games that are televised during the course of the season.

there was talk about moving Grambling home game against JSU to Shreveport for the Port City Classic, but some of us spoke against that, because The Jackson State game is usually the most intense game in the Hole!!! SU JSU and (use to be) Grambling have the most cocky fans in the SWAC, so anytime those 3 play each other, you can expect some trash talking, and JSU and SU are really the only games Gramblinites get excited about!!!

The attendance would shoot down. Plus, doesn't the SWAC office get a cut from each SWAC Sponsored game?

It doesnt take a rocket science to know that this game needs to be seen on National TV, but we have a dummy for a commissioner who cant comprehend that!

Back in the day Grambling and FAMU had some epic battles though few and far between. I could never understand why the two didn't ever establish a series.

exactly why does this game need to be seen on National tv?

does the commissioner get to decide which games are on national tv?

The conference's games with the highest attendance are shown on national tv. Does the commissioner get credit for that?

Grambling has had epic battles with FAMU and Tenn. State, I wish both of them would join the SWAC !!

I guess being relatively old school, certain games/teams seems like they should always meet. The teams I have always been interested in playing one another is S.U., FAMU, Jackson St, Grambling, TNST, South Carolina State and to a smaller degree Alcorn. It's just kind of what I grew up watching and in my mind these are the heavy weight match ups. Of course times have changed but those are the ones that interest me.

The last time the SU vs JSU games were shown yearly were doing the 80s and early 90s when BET still covered Black College Football. They never missed showing that game. I remember being able to still see it during my active duty days in the Navy.

SU FAMU Grambling TNST JSU and SCSU are the BIG 6 of the HBCU football world, They are the only schools with major brands and a traveling fanbase. just look at the SWAC-MEAC Challenge, the attendance only tops 20k when these schools play each other, and when these school get their footling back under them We will see a resurgence of HBCU football attendance !!!

A lot of that could be based on the fact that Coach Rob and Billy Joe (when he was at FAMU) really didn't care a lot for each other. Coach Rob accused Billy Joe of not exchanging game film. Billy Joe accused Coach Rob of of sending "spies" to his practices.

Because it ALWAYS pulls a big crowd and both teams come out to play. The energy at the game is SOOOOO intense and loud it's crazy.

I guess Rob and Pete must have talked about this. Pete didn't like Billy Joe either and vice versa. Pete accused him of the same isht. I never seen Pete dislike a coach that much........well he didn't like Shine either.

This game should be played in Memorial every year. The SU campus is a horrible place to hold this game. We need to work together to move this game to Jackson every year. TC had the right idea.
