Amanda Elzy can run and beat any Jackson school or ANY school on any given day. "World Class" Glass got that team playing some serious ball.

A few years ago, a 2A high school in the MS Delta with about 300 students (Coahoma County), put a good beating on Johnson from Huntsville in that classic in Jackson. That squad beat several out of state teams that year and lost to Aldine, TX and South Oak Cliff (I think they were state champs in TX that year) by 3/6 points, respectively. They had no inner city kids. That squad would have run thru 3/4 of JPS that year. I think there were 2 Dandy Dozens on that squad (Terrance Calvin - UAPB and Ravern Johnson - MSU).

Meridian, Starkville, Biloxi, Gulfport, Gentry (a few years back), and Madison Central have all challenged JPS in the past few years on the hardcourt.

These kids are getting smarter in the off season.
All those ballers come to Jackson in the summer and run with these teams up here, playing against top rated talent every day. They didn't use to do this until one day they figured out a pickup game in Jackson will have everything from College player to USATODAY picks. It has helped the entire state out basketball wise. They just had a massive AAU tournament last weekend. There was ballers from all over the state and out of state playing all over the capital city.

In their home towns, all they had to play against was team-mates, little brother and JOE from back in the day.

BTW:

Coaches are hauling azz to Beasley Rd for the Callaway job. They are getting apps and phone calls from everywhere about landing that job. They said they would narrow it down to the best 6 or 7 candidates in a few weeks.

Shid, Remember you said that would happen. LOL. I would too with Newman having 2 years left in HS if he stays at Callaway and don't head off to some super prep school somewhere.

Johnson only has 450 students and were horrible that year that was the year 3 D1 players transferred to the rival high school down the street Josh Langford (signed with Auburn) (Devin Langford (signed with Illinois) and Xavier Keeling (signed with Indiana)we hardly won any games that year...... I can say the same thing with Murrah and Madison Central (the year they were great) came to Huntsville and got knocked out the Thanksgiving tournament first 2 games... Madison Central may have won 1 game... Murrah stopped coming up here... even with Nelson they could never win a game. 3 years in a row they were 2 and out.

What years that this.
It had to be MURRAH post Osmond Jordan. That was the last time Murrah was great because after Jordan left, Jackson Lanier and jackson Provine took over and it has been that way every since. Laneir has took a slight nosedive but Provine is still rolling.

Murrah went on a downward slope when Osmond Jordan retired. They was switching coaches like water. Then one got caught whipping those players and got the heave hoe. Then in 2009, 1 player was killed and 3 seriously injured from MURRAH at the beginning of the season in a SUV crash 1 mile away from the school. They just got back to winning form a last year.

Madison Central did not become a threat in Mississippi basketball until 2 years ago and they still got a ways to go. Before that, they was just a big football and baseball school with a so-so basketball team.

Madison Central was good in bball the year im referring to... I remember going back and forth with Aaron. I cant tell you the exact year. When Murrah was here they had a very old coach... Not sure of what his name was but he was very old. I know Dundrecus (sp) Nelson was playing because he was puttin in work but his teams could never win. It may have been his 10,11th, 12 grade year. Gulfport from Mississippi was here also along with some teams from Shreveport... Woodlawn High I believe. Madison Central only came one year.

Murrah didn't have any decent teams back then and Madison Central has never really been a powerhouse in basketball.

Snickering!

I don't even know why SUJagtil brough up being an asst at Ole they have always been thrash until this one lucky year and I don't believe your new coach was on the staff of this years team so it is irrelevant to the point!

Some of ya'll are just ................ well I'm not gonna say it.

Again............These are the years that BRENT left PROVINE after turning them into a powerhouse and took a lions share of Provine and Jackson players to Ole Miss with him the next 4 years. I believe he was on this sweet 16 staff but Ya'll know everything. OH..........And this post is not just directed at posters from other schools either.

Brent a good fit as new JSU basketball coach

Jackson State University made the right move hiring Jackson native Wayne Brent as the school’s new men’s basketball coach.

Moving quickly after Tevester Anderson retired in mid-March, JSU chose Brent to lead its basketball program in what could result in being one of the school’s best profile position hires in years. Brent, 45, is perhaps best known as a successful high school coach.

Coaching Jackson’s Callaway to state championships four of the past five years, Brent also previously coached at Provine — his alma mater — where he won another state title. But when Ole Miss achieved some of its most outstanding basketball accomplishments ever from 1997-2001, including the school’s only Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament berth, Brent was an integral part

That's my high school unless you're loosly naming the school district Aldine ISD (Aldine HS, MacArthur HS, Nimitz HS and Eisenhower HS). Aldine HS has never been a basketball power... never.

Ah...............Ya'll wasting your time with this.
Any school that anybody from Mississippi say they beat will be the worst team in that state. But let them beat that same Mississippi team and it's another story.

back to topic.

Mustangs? I can't speak on if they're a power or not, but they finished 22-5 that year (2005-2006 season).

Ahh....my Old Pete was the coach for the Coahoma team!  That was my old basketball headcoach--and damn that dude could coach! Prolly, no one better in the state than him especially when he was in the Delta coaching those lesser talented kids. He will probably do down in history of MHSAA as one of the best 5 coaches in the state regardless of classification. Those teams from Broad Street were always good and his Coahoma teams were hella good.

Yes, Aldine Mustangs (we were known as a football power in the 80's and 90's). We've had a couple of good basketball teams from time to time but not program. That year you speak of featured Gary Johnson who went on to play at Texas.

Yessir! I remember seeing those Broad Street teams racing up and down the court. He turned that Coahoma program around from several winless seasons (may have won a total of 3-4 games from 98-01) to becoming back-to-back state champs by his 3rd/4th year there. Those Godfather-led Broad Street and Coahoma teams used to beat up on many teams regardless of classification.

Yep. Man could flat out coach. Now his sons on this other hand! :shame:
