Well I know one thing for sure, he is guaranteed to be 100% better than the basketball coach we got in Normal. I bet you my 98 year old Aunt and her nursing home crew could beat us and this is before they eat breakfast. At least JSU hired a winner. We hired buddy buddy from a losing 10 year squad.

I agree... btw I dont have anything about hiring a high school basketball coach. Im just looking from a standpoint of outcoaching or out talenting in the high school ranks.

Ironically the best players to ever hoop at Bama and go on to the NBA are Mississippians: Mo Williams, James "Hollywood" Robinson, Derrick McKey and Antonio McDyess.

LOL. Yep. Bama stayed in MS recruiting. Ms has put out tremendous basketball talent. Now some kids have went the wrong schools but we got a rich history of basketball talent.

To fair about the situation, I would like to tell you folks that the state of Georgia has better talent in football, basketball and baseball then Sippi and Bama combined. :gone:

DaHill, I believe your point is well taken but it's irrelevant. I trust your bball judgement more than a many others on this board so you should know that bball can be lil different than football. In football, the team with the talent wins 9 times out of 10. Most of us know that most JSU football coaches haven't been the greatest and we know Doug can't coach a lick but JSU and GSU can typically just roll out guys out there and let them out-talent the opposing team. Bball is not always like that but Brent seems to be a good mix of what a good bball team needs. Xs and Os and recognizing match-ups are what you need in bball and Brent has shown that he at least some a decent bball IQ that will compliment the talent that typically resides in Jackson in every sport. Tevester got the team on track at the end of the year but he and his assistants were never good at stategy and most of our best recruits just fell in our laps. Brent should be able to go out and get one or two players that he really wants.

Congrats on the hire JSU. If he can raise the level of competition in the SWAC I'm all for it.

By the way, my cell phone blew up yesterday from a TSPN posting legend that's taking his annual sabbatical claiming we now have the next "Strib/THarvey" of the SWAC.

Mississippi High school basketball is overated.... winning a championship there doesnt show me anything.

Bruh stop, Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf), Monta Ellis, Al Jefferson, Clarence Weatherspoon, Othella Harrington, Mo Williams, Antonio McDyess, Jonathan Bender, Justin Reed, Erick Dampier, and many others disagree with you. Mississippi kids can ball.

Right now Coach K and Roy Williams are beating down the door of Devin Booker to get him to play at their schools and in 2 years Malik Newman is gonna be a Top 10 if now best player in the nation.

I'm not sure if DAHILL's talking about the players, the teams or what. He really didn't specify. He can make a valid point for the teams that come out of the State. But in terms of players, themselves, MS is doing well considering its population.

I'm not so sure of that either. I know JPS schools used to run the table at those "Battle of the Borders" and "Rumble in the South" tourneys. Callaway even won a few out of state games this year in that Palms Classic.

Yeah, in some years, but most times we don't. Those Murrah teams in the '90's kicked butt where ever they went. Lanier, Provine and C-Way have had some teams that did well nationally. Biloxi HS, too. Callaway played a brutal out of state schedule this year. It's hard to win when you have one team with 2 or 3 good players, and the other team is loaded with D1 commitments and signees. But I'll put our AAU teams up against anybody in the Nation.

Im stating a state championship in Mississippi is what is overated... give me a job coaching in Jackson at one of the high schools and Im going to look good period.... the talent in Jackson far outweighs the talent in the rest of the state. If he would have won these championships in any other city in Mississippi I would be impressed. Basketball is ran by the inner city (in most cases) Jackson is the only "inner city" in Mississippi. That would be like taking out Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile and Tuscaloosa and leaving Birmingham as the only "inner city"...of course a Birmingham team is going to win state every year. When was the last time a team from Jackson didnt win a state championship?

you are not understanding what Im saying....

btw the best player in the nation in 2 years will be from right here in Huntsville... made all state as a 8th and 9th grader... 6'5 200 pound guard who as of yesterday was named Gaterade player of the year in Alabama... averaged 25 and 9 as a freshman... and 25 points, 17 boards and 4 assist in the Final Four this year as a freshman.

Mississippi State got who I consider the best player in the state from this year.. but he is playing football Derunnya Wilson... him and Jeremy Johnson (Mr. Football in ALabama qb who signed with Auburn) put on a show in the Alabama-Mississippi All Star game last week.

Dahill,

That wasn't always the case. For years JPS consisted of Murrah and not much else. We had some other good teams but this trend of multiple JPS schools winning every year didn't start until the mid 90s. A lot of it had to do with influx of camps and such. I credit Brent on a lot of that because he ushered in the first summer camps and did a good job of keeping the players in his district on his team. And the coaching has improved greatly. I must point out that several of the city coaches came up under Brent. The AAU influence helps too in terms of keeping track of these kids. Before we'd lose a bunch of "boy's club legends" in that space between middle and highschool.

That's a good point. The Coast used to really give the Jackson teams a run until about 10 years ago. And even before that, JPS was mainly Lanier and Murrah. Provine was only good for football until Brent came in. But lately 5A and 6A has been all Jackson Metro.

But what I like about Brent is that he at least have some experience at Ole Miss. I think they went to the Sweet 16 one year he was there. Plus he has a good relationship with the HS coaches and most importantly these days, the AAU coaches. He touched on everything I needed to hear at the press conference yesterday. I'm pleased with the hiring. All the championships are just icing on the cake.

Jackson St. made a great hire. Alcorn went with 3 different type coaches when David Whitney retired. 1st was Sam West an assistant under David whitney and his highest finish was 10-8 in the swac with a 4th place finish. When David Whitney talent left. He went to the bottom of the SWAC. He is now the AD of McComb Public Schools. Then we went with Larry Smith, an Alcorn star, who always wanted to coach at Alcorn. He had assistant coach experience in the NBA and WNBA. He was able to get some decent talent but couldn't coach them up and didn't win not one OOC DI game while he was here. Attendence got so bad that games started having free admission. Alcorn then wanted another coach but didn't want to fire him so now he is the Marketing Director for Athletics. Then we went with Luther Riley who didn't have any college coaching experience expect being a GA under David Whitney. He cut everybody off the team except 4. He improved the team from 10th place to 7th last year and from 7th place to 5th place this year. I believe that with him as yall coach. Alcorn, Jackson St., Southern, and Texas Southern will always be in the top 4 spots with signature wins. The team thats in the sweet 16 now beat Alcorn by 2 points.

I concur

All this talk about Alabamas players and I ain't heard or seen shat from a player from that state in basketball worth mentioning in mordern times.

If I was a highschool basketball in Bamma, I would never be heard from again. Overated. Alabama is non-existant in highschool basketball.
