STARKVILLE — Mississippi State says freshman guard DeVille Smith has withdrawn from school, the first departure since Rick Stansbury stepped down as coach at the end of the season.
The point guard is expected to transfer to another school. If his grades are in order, the destination may be Jackson State, said Wayne Brent, Smith’s coach at Callaway High.
“I talked to him last week and I talked to him about making sure he had his grades together so he’d have the option to transfer or go to junior college if he didn’t like the new coach,†Brent said.
Smith, a Jackson native, averaged 4.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 26 games this season. He left campus twice during his freshman year, missing seven games because of headaches and dizziness, according to MSU officials.
Health does not appear to be the driving force behind his decision.
“I think DeVille just wants to go somewhere else,†Brent said. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him.â€
