JSU hires two assistants

This thread has gone about as expected. We could've hired Norm Chow and some of you would've still had problems.

Not true. If you guys would have hired Norm Chow, I would have been the first to say that the rest of the SWAC would need to follow suit and attract a coach of that caliber. Trust me no one would be saying a word. If they did it would out of envy. Right now no one envies the coaching staff JSU has. Not even Valley or PV. If Bell was at SU I would be saying the same thing.........hell I said it when we had Otis Washington and Gerald Kimble who both were better than Bell is now in a more competitive SWAC at that time I might add.

What you fail to understand is that whether or not these candidates are exciting or nameworthy isn't the issue. The issue is whether or not they can coach. If they can, then we'll be ok. If not, then Bell will be gone. But you can't determine that based on where these guys are from. As for envy, I can't think of one coaching staff in BCF that's worthy of envy.

Hampton has a good coaching staff. It is not that we are saying those guys can't coach. It is that they come to you with no decent resume. JSU is above that my eyes. You don't come to JSU to prove yourself. You need to have already proven yourself to get a football job at a program like JSU. Say for example like Albany State's coach, he has won at the D-2 level and probably is ready for the next level. These coaches that JSU just hired should be getting hired by the D-2 schools and not a JSU caliber 1-AA program. Especially for an OC position. Just my opinion. I am sure you disagree.

Interesting JR. And I do agree. There are more well qualified coaches out there that would love to come to JSU and that have proven themselves.

True. We have one of your Alums as our OC. But I also know he applied for the HC job so he may not want to go down.

Thank you.

But I guess this is the "new school" mentality when it comes to EXPECTATIONS at JSU. The cruve is being downgraded. :xeye:

Yes, that does seems to be the mindset of some of our alumnis' and fans. It takes a very small mind to think that we have the best coaching staff on board and that we all should be happy about this mess. I am mortified and passed disgust.

Stag,

WTH my falling got to do with Bell's choosing coaches and your purchases???

And basically,

Any daggone coach has to prove himself. No matter how much success he has. Knight had to do it a TTech, McKenzie, Comegys, Jackson or whomever would have to do it @ JSU. The only difference is less people would still be complaining. That's all.

JSUII, I could've sworn you were in that 1% that thought Bell was "doing a great job". And wrote a letter on that point, perhaps I'm confused because disgusted wasn't an adjective you used.

Yes, you are very confused because I have never ever agreed with Bell's hiring from day one. So please don't get me confused with the 1% that thinks that Bell is doing an outstanding job. I am disgusted and have been since the first day Bell came on board and I will continue to be disgusted until he leaves JSU. I wanted a new coach but, I sure as H...didn't want Bell.

I think being there IN PERSON watching with my TWO BIG ARSE EYE'S can see thing's better than your "word of mouth" reports. :goof:

But Frat Bobby Knight had gotten himself fired at Indiana for his abrasive actions so the only thing he had to prove at Texas Tech was that he could behave, everyone knew he could coach. Sure most coaches have to prove they can CONTINUE to win, but in Bell's case and the new assistants, they haven't even proven they can win at all. JSU should not be the vehicle for that experiment. That should be done at less storied programs. When Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden retire, I bet those schools aint going to hire some coach that hasn't either been a successful head coach somewhere else or an assistant under a very successful head coach at a successful program. No different than we(HBCUs) should do. We may not have the same monetary resources but there are too many well qualified candidates that JSU can hire. Actually these assistants are all Bell can get at this point because any decent coach knows that Bell will be fired at the end of the year which means no job security. These guys are just glad to be there. Simply to be able to put a name like JSU on their resume will be big for them to obtain that D-2 job they will be at next year.

You shole is right JR.

I would think witht the pressure that Bell is under he would've made better choices of the coach's that he bought in. Really, the Jefferon guy is not a bad hire at OL. He's been an OC at the NAIA level, and being brought up as a position coach on the D1-AA level is a natural coaching progression, but to hire a OC from the community college ranks.

Not a DII, DIII, or NAIA OC, but a freakin Community College? That's not even a lateral move, CC to D1A, after coming from being a high school coach.

Come on now Bengal E, you can't possibly believe in your heart of hearts that these are good hires. Actually it looks like the Jefferson guy is more qualified to be the OC, than this character.

NICE

First of all, no one will argue that these were the best coaches we can get. I never said that. Personally I preferred Albany State's OC. But I don't make the decisions on the coaching staff, Bell does. And apparently he felt more comfortable with Rigby. That's his choice, he'll either live or die by it.

Second this training ground stuff is off base. Both of these guys have ample experience in the jobs they were hired to do. Jefferson has 8 years experience as an OC, 1 year as a Grad Assistant at Oklahoma State, and 4 stints as an NFL intern. And he's done all of this at age 32. Don't tell me he isn't ready to be our O-line coach. Rigby's been a headcoach on the Highschool level for 6 years and an OC on the community college level for 4. You act like they don't play football on the JC level. He's proven himself on the Highschool and JC level, now he gets a chance on the college level.

99, I never said that Jefferson was a bad hire, actually he's more qualified than Rigby.

I dunno, if you think a high school coach of 6 years, and a CC OC for 4 years equates to being qualified to be a D-1AA coordinator then so be it.

You're not the least bit skeptical? One coach is talking about what he did in high school, and the other says he's hitting the ground running. At 10 am. That' running alright.

NICE

JR, NICE
Looking at these coaches resume's they may be more quailified than Bell himself when he arrived at JSU. I think JSU football is above this and I hope they rise to there former greatness again.

Yes I think that. Our last OC had 5 years experience as a running backs coach at Georgia and aanother 5 years at Marshall. On paper he was highly qualified to be our OC but as it turns out he wasnt. Heck Bell had almost 20 years as a D-1A coordinator. Surely that qualifies him on paper to be a D-1AA head coach. But the fact is you never really know about a coach until he's put in a position to succeed or fail. As of now, I'll give Rigby the benefit of the doubt until he fails.

My attitude is always going to be wait and see until I see the results. If that's skepticism then yes I am.

You're really splitting hairs now. Jefferson didn't arrive in Jackson until 1am that morning. I guess you feel he should've been at work by 2.
And Rigby was just using his prior experiences as an example of his beliefs in terms of offense. I guess he's supposed to just forget everything he's learned as a coach.

Bell could at least had hired Jimmy Joe as his offensive coordinator. It seems to me that Jackson State Tigers Football Team is going down the drain under Bell. I hope the next head football coach at Jackson State will be someone that is committed to winning championships and conference titles. J

Is Jimmy Joe related to Billy Joe?

Yeah i just read where he was one of the 4 coaches to resign recently. I'll pass on him. From what I understand, he was FAMU's OC in name only; Billy was really the one in charge of the offense. Plue FAMU's offense is pass-first, ours is a run-based offense. He would make a good WR coach for us, but that's it.

Jimmy Joe was the OC at FAMU under his brother until just recently. Due to all the stuff going on with the FAMU AD and President and so-called budget cuts. I guess Jimmie and other assistants left FAMU because of all that turmoil. Heck Billy Joe is looking too. lol. Jimmie Joe would be a good hire. Maybe even for Head Coach. I don't know where he went. Maybe some FAMU folks know.

I just looked up Jimmy and I have to disagree about him being headcoach material. Right now I think he'd make a good position coach. And I'm not that high on Billy Joe either. I think his time might've passed.

Dude, if Bell wanted Albany's coach...looks like he could have got him but Bell has to go with people who he thinks knows football and can get the job done. Steve Wilson was 0-11 last year but he once led a team to a Black College National Championship. It does not matter where you came from...hell we had an OC who came from Marshall and UGA and he did not know ****. One thing wrong with our offense is that we never had a person experienced in calling plays....now we have not one but TWO former OC's on staff. And if you look at it, one knows the passing game and one knows the running game. We have made a serious upgrade in coaching.

....and Hampton does not have a good coaching staff. Joe Taylor ....nuff said. :(
