Jay Walker says Southern, Grambling, Texas Southern are taking too long to name a coach

Keep ignoring how much Mac dragged this out if you want to. For whatever reason he didn't understand that Houston is not Lorman. If you draw a process out too long politics will enter and cause disruption.

I initially thought Mac was taking long to commit because he wanted to stay at Alcorn, but now I'm thinking his play was to see how desperate my TSU would get.
So you all feel McNair was stringing you all along too? 🤔

All of it is just speculation and I could be miles off, but when you look at the way Alcorn went western-movie-style with that announcement about a statement at high noon I knew something was off. I mean, why a statement and not an official announcement of whether Mac was staying or not? Was is because they didn't know what to announce just yet? It seems now that Alcorn gave Mac an ultimatum to make a decision by high noon or they would be moving on. I believe Alcorn had two different statements prepared for release dependent upon Mac's response. He apparently chose to depart, and Alcorn looks to have had a contingency plan in place in the event he did. No time was wasted in naming Cedric Thomas as the next head coach.

Thinking and observing all of that, and trying to make some sense of it, I now think it is possible Mac was stringing my TSU along to see how desperate we would get salary wise. It seems like he was coming all along at this point or he definitely made up his mind well before Alcorn was due to release their statement.

Dooley to Grambling is chess. They’re trying to gut SU team while securing Louisiana talent. Most the guys on SU are Dooley recruited. This is a tactic hire IF it’s true. I mean the man did go to a swac championship twice since 2021. He just can’t be a head coach and OC at the same time. This is just about his connections and recruiting. That’s it.

That is a great point, but let’s not forget that Dooley was the OC at Grambling before, and they pretty tough in the SWAC under his offensive direction. I think it’s a great call by Grambling on the recruiting side and coaching side. He won’t leave Mickey Joseph until the Delaware State or Mississippi Valley jobs come open.

I'd really like to know why are people stuck on Andre Johnson, who has never been a head coach. This splash hiring has gone a little bit too far. We need people that are proven and have been in the position before when we can get them.
Sorry but we at Texas Southern screwed this up ourselves.

Alcorn had a last ditch push so to speak with Mac that same morning. He still didn't want to sign, thankfully we did have a contingency plan in place and President Cook moved swiftly to maintain order at the Rez. Stringing this out past signing day could have led to a total dismantling of our program. We had been in negotiations with Mac since November and no dice. We had to secure Alcorn atp.

There's no recruiting going on now - it won't be doom - basically it looks like the board said if you wanted to string alcorn along then we can show you how it feels but from

If it's McNair the issue is the staff at this point -

Will he ever be comfortable is the real issue seeing how this played out

No we didn't, you are too far removed to understand the politics at play going on here. If Mac would have committed earlier board room politics would have never entered the picture or the effects of it, which are being played out right now, would have come to an end by now instead of just starting. The administration did their job, our governor appointed board is running interference.

I don't know of one single alum or administrator that wants Andre Johnson as our head coach, but according to reports we have some non-alumnus, governor appointed board members that do.

I respect this 1000%. The Program over the people; no one should be bigger than the program. I pray that tsu finds a way to operate in that manner. I couldn't believe how people wanted to stay with McKinney because they liked him. 🤮 I don't like anyone, I love tsu.

Who says there's no recruiting going on? Players are going in the portal left and right now and they are being recruited.

I don't think he will have a problem getting a staff together, he has connections.

Legal recruiting and also good staffers have been snatched up so if you want someone now you gotta spend to get them before they had options

How not? With all these kids committing over the last couple days?

Why are non- TSU folks worrying about our incompetence. Our football has majored in incompetence. Are y'all surprised. Did y'all expect us to hire the late Eddie Robinson or WC Gordon or someone like that. Hell no, we will do a nationwide search and come up with whom ever the board picks. Someone they owe a favor to. TSU basketball fans remember the Great Claude Cummins womens basketball. Someone on the board owed his dad a favor and gave them the TSU job.
