Ready to roar: The Southern University System Foundation and its athletic department will announce plans Monday on a new sports complex called JaguarPARK. According to a press release, the park project includes the transformation of the east side of A.W. Mumford Stadium into a urban sports complex. “JaguarPARK will boast a lighted NCAA regulation soccer game field and football practice field, a soccer field house and coaching observation tower, along with javelin and discus runways,” reads a release from Southern, whose officials will outline the park plans at 8:45 a.m. at the campus football practice fields on Harding Boulevard. “JaguarPARK will be enclosed by mesh and aluminum fencing with 40 connecting brick columns, providing both permanent and annual sponsorship opportunities.”

This is nice but makes absolutely no sense with the pending budget cuts that y'all been complaining about. It just seems like poor timing.

Poor timing to improve the infrastructure of the campus? It makes a lot of sense to those that donated their time and money to ensure this project could be started and completed.
 
Funds that are donated and earmarked can be used only for that earmarked purpose. With Jindal leaving office in January (thank God), the new governor, be he democrat or republican, will undoubtedly have to raise taxes, and this will be good for higher education.
 
A question for all Jaguar posters; DOES THERE EXIST ANOTHER PRIVATE FORUM SIMILAR TO THE ONE WE HAD HERE ON WHICH WE CAN PRIVATELY COMMUNICATE?

I guess you haven't been keeping up with the news in Louisiana lately. Did you honestly think those other folks were going to let Jindal cut that much out of LSU's budget???

If you have been reading the news, the state legislators have raise taxes (gas, film and business,), which was needed, because these companies were getting away with paying nothing,compared to.the other states, This governor was going to.have this state broke..... instead of letting these billion dollar companies pay their fair share.. BUT I.am glad the foundation has gotten private funding for this because the times of the state helping SU.in the capacity is DONE''

But like Dr.Broussard said on social media, the state has helped out The New Orleans Saints, ULL, ULM, Northwestern, McNeese, Nicholls, and SLU with their field, why not us.

I was in Baton Rouge this past Friday (my daughter was one of the 665----TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY!:)) and saw the construction and digging taking place. My daughter was telling us about the upcoming Jaguar Park.

Good stuff SU! I like how all of the Jag sports will all be in one central common area. Great planning!
 
I agree, that is why I.rarely say.anything on this board especially when folks called SU broke,, SU is becoming less funded by the State then any.HBCU in the nation, its sad but a new reality,, last time I.looked SU was at 30% from almost 75 in 2006.. HOPEFULLY, that will changed, because out of any university, I.think SU deserves all.of this

Louisiana has one the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in the country, which is why the State has allowed way too many unnecessary tax credits. In a budget shortfall year, monies for essential services like education, health, and infrastructure upgrade will be the first to get diminished, unless the legislators do what they just did in reducing the State's tax credits. Just by reading the quoted piece in the Shreveport Times below, one can see that Louisiana legislators are some big time smokers.

Still, members ticked off approval on 10 other revenue raising bills — among them an increase in the cigarette tax, a 20 percent reduction of tax credits across the board and the acceleration of the phase out of the solar tax credit — before getting bogged down in a long debate about how much to reduce movie tax credits.

But higher education and health care is not protected under the Louisiana constitution,, which is why some think it is time to changed that,, and Jindal.with his aspiration for the white house signed the DONT RAISE TAXES ..And when he did companies ... AS I STATED BEFORE, WERE PAYING LITTLE TO.NOTHING..,my question is if LOUISIANA can find money this legislation session,, why couldn't they find this money YEARS AGO... LET ME Guess LSU..

It amazes me SU has struggled for years,,, BUT I GUESS the SEC MONEY could not pay for the issues at LSU,,and now the state could find millions because LSU lets all be honest,, went to.the state legislators and said we cannot compete with the other SEC schools,and dooms DAY scenarios, the SAME school.that receives most of the state funding but has yet to crack the Top 50 national tier universities...SMHHHH. but I will stay in topic,, This is much needed and I am glad for SU

I agree with you, but if your read the Shreveport Times, the only tax that is being raised is the cigarette tax. Most of the monies are coming from the REDUCTION of tax credits, including a 20% REDUCTION across the board. You do know there's a big difference between tax credits and raising taxes.
 
Yes I do.. I miss typed,, I just think the whole thing IS SAD.on every levels,, But hopefully SU has learned..
 
Also, raising the sale tax on cigarettes is not raising taxes on an individual or corporation, which Jindal is in favor of. Louisiana definitely need to restructure its tax code and put in measures in its budget to protect essential services such as health, education, and infrastructure improvement. Jindal's tax loopholes for big corporations are the reason why the state is in this mess. Maybe the next governor and legislators will come up with a plan to protect Louisiana essential services. If that happens, SU needs to be directly involved to make sure there isn't any funny language created that would keep the SU System from getting its fair share.
