Is this the end of the 9 game mandate?

Now, if your school's AD can't find another game to replace a money game that takes place every other year, then you SERIOUSLY need to find a new AD. And if your budget is depended on a game that takes place every other year, then your school SERIOUSLY needs to consider Division II sports.
Mr. T, you have spoken a mouthful!

using your JSU and SU example, what is the team that JSU can readily get to replace that game
We can put a FAMU, Hampton, or another HBCU with a strong following in its place. Maybe make it a classic and get a promoter to back it like we did when we went to Fla. and played Hampton in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

That's it MH, we don't HAVE to replace the SU game. SU is an every other year game. I would take a trip to the CCC or a two year deal for Detroit/Chicago and we would not fall that short of the SU revenue. We won't die because of the loss. In fact, in 2001, it rained...no stormed and we only drew 30K for the SU game....we are still here!! We can live two years without SU and they can live 2 years without us.
OK lets do the math.
SU vs JSU
50,000 * $25=$1,250,000

JSU in CCC=$250,000

Minus expenses.
Even with them people robbing J-State with no grease, its not even close.

so TP, you're foregoing one of your highest game$ in hopes that you'll get a classic invite.

Like I said, if money didn't matter, then it would be so easy to turn your back on $$ (and tradition too, as yall like to say)

sorry, but I havent heard any real reason why the SWAC should be in the business of telling its teams who it can't schedule as a non-conference opponent.

Which one of those teams are gonna put 50,000 plus in memorial.

Who cares on the years that we don't play SU, I would be perfectly happy with a schedule like this:

CCC/Detroit/Chicago Classic vs A&T, SCState, or FAMU
Southern Heritage Classic
An OVC or Southland team (within 3 hours of Jackson)
An OVC or Southland team (within 3 hours of Jackson)
MS Valley
TxSO
AlaState
UAPB
AAMU
PV
Alcorn

  Man I just don't understand some of these folk. If its not broke SU vs JSU, SU vs Alcorn, Gram vs JSU, Gram vs Alcorn don't fix it. For the sake of our conference and fans , these game must be played every year.

That number becomes closer if you add in other classic on the year that JSU would have had to travel to SU and if you consider the fact that we don't take home the whole 1.2 million. In fact, Memorial gets 10-15% of that and we still have other expenses just as any other school.

Even still, the SWAC should not adopt a c**n age policy just to please JSU. Also, giving us more opportunites to play out of conference teams helps when you don't have to play a team like PV. In the end, the money pretty much balances out. Again,I will miss the rival games but I am not for having a 7 game mandate and not following it. If JSU-Grambling-Alcorn-SU do play each other every year, I don't want it to count unless it is on the rotation. Otherwise that would not be fair.

don't you think there won't be a big dropoff?
Especially with Hampton
MH, there are HBCUs with a strong following in other conferences. Heck, I didnt mind playing USM, Northwestern, etc.......

If it is okay with the BAMA's and Texans, then I am for it. But if it causes too much confusion like it did before, I am against it. According to most, the SWAC coaches were for the 9 game mandate....now all of a sudden, they are against it. It would work by having a 7 game format but adding a clause to allow JSU-SU-Gram-Alcorn to play every year becasue that is what all of this fuss is about. We are not going to play the other 6 unless we have to anyway.

Life's not always fair. SU vs JSU, SU vs Alcorn, GSU vs JSU, GSU vs ALcorn is what the fans want. You go scheduling all these other games and the fans dont show where will you be. If the fans always shows up to these game why in the world would you take the games away from them. You don't know how many SU fans complain because SU didn't travel to Jackson last season.Just imagine them not being on the schedule. How can our schools sell season tickets if we take away the games that the fans really want to see. Nobody gives a damn about no intra state rival but folks that have other agenda's.

I am not arguing that point. I want the games but how do you handle this situation professionally. You know how when you get lax on one rule, you get lax on others and then we end up a traveling circus. Look at the SU-UAPB fiasco a few years ago. I am for the FIRM 7 game format simply because I think it has fewer loopholes in it. You give black folks to much room for creativity, you gonna end up with some BS (how you think we got names like Shanequa and Donnelrisha???).

why are you in a conference then? Leave and you could schedule whoever you want.

Seriously, EVERY school has rivals and games that always draw more than others. Stop thinking that your so-called big 3 (and sometimes Alcorn) are any different. And, for me, this whole argument is bigger than any specific teams.

If there is a 7 game mandate, there shouldn't be any special consideration given to any school (or group of schools) any more than any others. Schedule those 7 games and beyond that, the SWAC should have no say in how you schedule the remaining 4 (or 5 in some years).

Umm, this is our conference...SU-GSU-Alcorn-JSU

You leave!!

Also, you don't have any rivals ANYWHERE outside of the state of Alabama.

8 game mandate with 2 permanent rivals, 4 divisional games, and the others rotating. Thats the only way. 3 non-conference games is plenty. You can schedule meac, pwc, D-1a if you like.

Obviously it isn't, if your beloved big 3 (and sometimes Alcorn) can't get its way to play every year.
:lol::lol:

must not be as big as you think.

Stop actin like you saying something new....all you are saying is that you agree with TP's 3b. :snicker:

I told you, there are only two options, the rest of these "ideas" are stupid

3a: The most professional
3b: Makes JSU-SU-Alcorn-Grambling happy because that is the only reason any creativity needs to be made with 3a. Doug played all 9 games but it appears that Spears does not have that mentality.

I am a netrual party but with schools in the south like Memphis, Houston, TCU, Miss State, and USM, Troy, Arkansas St and etc they are looking to fill in schedule and this is a perfect time for the SWAC to get the money.

Look what Grambling did with A&T by dropping us for Houston.

Who knows an Alabama State could maybe beat Troy. The only bad thing is once you beat them forget about getting another game

Certain SWAC schools don't have to prostitute themselves for a payday(Southern and Jackson St.) We can make the same amount or more with a home game.

Dude, you just joined the stupid crew...LOL

You CAN'T have permanent rivals. It is unfair for a reason that if JSU-SU-Alcon-GSU push this, we will have deal with. That reason is that for JSU and Alcorn, the EAST is stronger than the WEST. We would be forced to play the top 2 WEST teams every year while the BAMA's and Valley get to play TxSo and PV. Now if we want this we are stupid!! For SU and GSU, the East teams are all about an equal threat. However, the MAIN reason this won't fly is that the BAMA's and Texan's will have to be plain ole DUMB to let GSU and SU have Alcorn and JSU as permanent rivals and d*mn them the fate of PV-TxSo and AAMU/AAMU permanent rivals. Why would they agree with that. The permanent rival thing just does not work for the SWAC and all discussions of that need to be tossed out. If you want the four core/central schools to play each other, you are asking for option 3b. :D
