Is this the end of the 9 game mandate?

Please forgive me, but this is "c**n Thinking".

Anytime two conference schools meet, it should be a conference game. That practice is carried out on all levels of sports from middle school to the professional level in every sport. WHY would the SWAC alter the practice? Oh, because we don't buy tickets unless we can show off our new clothes when GSU comes to town.

I'm not arguing that Sperm. I'm simply stating that if a game draws a crowd leave it, but most importantly schools have to really reach and think of ways to make money.

The conferance can only mandate the official conferance games. They have nothing to do with schools scheduling their non-conferance games, that is always that schools responsibility.

In an ideal world where money isn't a concern, then I might be inclined to believe that these teams shouldn't play unless the game count. (ala the SEC) It's that same ideal world where our basketball teams don't schedule "unwinnable" road games early in the season in order to make $$$$.

sorry, but until the ideal world is a reality, then we have to be concerned about the bottom line. And it would be crazy for us to just discount one of our biggest paydays/games, just because the Joneses don't do it.

Me personally I would love to see more in state rivalry's. In Louisiana utilzing Independence Stadium more to fill it up. I remember when SU used to play Northwestern, Grambling/McNeese, etc....that's in state money.
Our fans would rather see SU vs Famu, SU vs Tenn. St. To hell with playing those in state schools.

Exactly, its called spending $80 on season tickets. (4 games @ $20 each). That is how Arkansas can still put 60K in the stand when they play teams like North Texas.

We have to take the steps to make the big money and if you don't gamble you'll be stuck with the thoughts of what COULD happen.

MH...let me be clear:

I am not in support of the following schedule changes

AAMU v. ASU
GSU v. SU
JSU v. GSU
JSU v. SU
Alcorn v. Valley
Alcorn v. JSU
Prairie View v. Grambling
TSU v. PV
Valley v. JSU

These are strong rivalries and should never change....

Well, whats wrong with making the game COUNT? How can ASU play Grambling and lose and AAMU play Grambling and lose, but it is only a conference lose for AAMU?

Again I say, why play a school in your conference if it is NOT a conference game? The SWAC needs to come up with 7 conference games for each school. One game could be set inter-division rivarly (SU/JSU, GSU/Alcorn, etc.), with two rotating inter-division games. Then go and play NON-SWAC schools.

I can't wait until the day that the SEC schools like LSU and Tennesses play each other and the game won't count as a conference game. Then and only then will it make sense to me.

Because if they drop it to 7 GAMES THAT WILL COUNT.................a SWAC school could keep it's $BIG MONEY GAME$ and STILL HAVE 3 GAME'S TO SCHEDULE OUT-OF-CONFERENCE GAMES EVERY YEAR.

Example................We could play our 7 Conference games, KEEP SU, TENN. ST................and still have 2 dates to play with every year.

Heck ...............I would not mind seeing our 4 non-conference games being against teams like SU, (even if it don't count), FAMU/B-CC/HAMPTON/etc, and a PWC................McNeese/G. Southern/etc or a D-1A.

9-game mandate...............leaves no room for compramise.
7 games would give everyone room to breath.

EX Schedule:
SWAC GAMES:
Bamma A@M
Bamma St.
Valley
Alcorn
Gram
UAPB/p.V/Tx.Sou
.............(2)..........for a total of 7.

Non Conference/Out-of-conference games:
SU...(if it don't count)
Tenn St.........Heritage Classic
McNeese.......home/home
FAMU/Hampton/Howard/etc..MEAC...........home/home/or..........netural site classic.

FLEXABILITY.............in scheduling.

LOL...it's also called...picking up your tickets for the game prior to the season if you are a student...and if you don't...YOU PAY.

Also Arkansas has a fan base out of this world. I hate the school as far as administration and principles; but when they play on TV...I'm damn near calling the Hogs...

Thats exactly why the 9 game Mandate was started.

OK, I think it boils down to these 4 teams that need to play each other (inter-divisional) every year for simply the purposes of drawing a large crowd.

JSU & Alcorn has to play either or both GSU and SU and vice-versa each year. Teams like Valley, AAMU, and ASU would simply love to play them, but it would not be the same draw.

UAPB, TxSU, and PVU don't really have to have a particular team out of the East on its schedule each year because the draw of the game doesn't really make a difference.

So I say let JSU-SU, JSU-GSU, Alcorn-GSU, & Alcorn-SU be permanant CONFERENCE games with one rotating game remaining (2-yr rotation). Everybody else gets 1 permanant opponent w/ two rotating games (2yr rotation).

I could care less about who plays who and when, as long as the game COUNT when it is played.

Unless there's some kind of fairness, then this wouldn't work.

I mean, how can some of the teams have 2 permanent opponents and some have 1?

It's not going to be fair. Some coaches/AD's will be upset at how this plays out.....

Some of yall really live in a dream world making statements like "find other ways to make money". If it was that damn easy, why yall ain't millionaires???

FIRST, PLEASE QUIT COMPARING THE SWAC TO THE SEC. IT AIN'T THE SAME. EVERY SEC SCHOOL SELLS OUT NO MATTER WHO THEY PLAY, IN THE SWAC, WHO YOU PLAY MAKES A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN THE GATE. SPECIFIC EXAMPLE, in 2004 SU at ALCORN 32,151 1 week before that TSU at Alcorn 15,275 (and if I am correct, that was homecoming) and 3 weeks before that Alabama St at ALCORN 7957

NOW LET ME REPEAT THIS FOR THE SLOW MINDED HERE. THAT'S A 4 X difference between SU and ASU. add parking and consessions, that's a hell of a lot of money that you done already figured out how to make and have grown this product for 50 years to throw away to "think up something else" just to even out the schedule.

You will find similar numbers in other cases, for example:
Grambling at ASU 17,286 2 weeks before PV at ASU 6,036

The A-10 has 12 teams. They play 9 conference games and 2 non-conference games.
Actually, they only play 8 conference games. In 2004, Delaware played nine conference teams and one of the games did not count. They played New Hampshire the first week of the season, who is also in A-10 and it didn't count in the standings. Look at their 2004 schedule and the standings to see for yourself.

 I think 7 is a good idea. It would allow each school to pick big money games that will enhance the program

8 game mandate is the way to go. Each team has 2 permanent rivals, 4 divisional games, and the other 2 rotates off of your schedule. Here's an example.

SU Schedule
-------------

Jackson State(rival)
Alcorn(rival)

Gram(division)
PVU(division)
TSU(division)
PB(division)

AAMU(rotates)
A-State(rotates)

***** Valley not on schedule this season(rotates back on next season).

You could care less, but others do, and rightly so. If things are any way like they have been for the past 10 years, JSU will play the 2 best teams IN THE ENTIRE SWAC every year (before yall start smacking and whinning, look at who has won the SWAC for the past 10 years) the bama schools will get PV, TSU and Pine Bluff (look at thier combined record for the last 10 years, no smack, just stating facts) hardly a level playing field.

The Bama vs Texas schools are long trips that don't make money. Don't get it twisted, them bama schools want SU/Gram on their schedule every year also. Nobody really wants PV, TSU or Pine Bluff.

Whew....where do I start???

How quickly most of us are forgetting or really never understood. The problem with scheduling and some of the comments on this board are we are trying to have our cake and eat it too. Folks that can't happen. Well it can, but there will have to be some real sacrifices made and policies adhered to.

About the rivalries:

DSN, half those rivalries you mentioned are divisional games so they don't matter any way. They'll be played regardless. The only true rivalry games that are interdivisional are the games between JSU, Alcorn, Gram and Southern. The other schools are developing rivalries but they are not on the same magnitude. (Sorry folks JMO)

Now with that said, herein lies the one of the problems. Is JSU or Alcorn willing to play SU and Gram every year as a conference game and if it is a loss, have it count to whether or not they go to the SCG? And if A&M, State, or Valley loses to SU or Gram those games don't count? A&M or State could very well lose to SU & Gram and win the MCC and represent the East in the SCG. How?? because they lost to either JSU or Alcorn and GSU/SU. That's one conference (divisional) loss versus two for JSU if they lose to GSU?SU. Is JSU willing to do that? Will they sacrifice for this "big payday"? For this "rivalry"? That's the question.

The other problem is, is it okay for the other sister schools to use the top draws to finance their pockets? I mean there is usually a good crowd when SU comes to a town, so if you're in the East, you don't want to lose that so you still want them on your schedule, they have a spot open so do they schedule you or Allen or McNeese? If they pick one of the others are you salty? because there is no conference love? Nevermind the point of playing a conference "nonconference" game that doesn't count as mentioned above. Is it fair to play JSU/Alcorn and give them paydays but not A&M/State?

The only way to fair and equitably do this is to develop a schedule where everyone bites the bullet. No one was willing to do that before, therefore we started the 9 game mandate. I'm sorry you just can't sell ME on a conference "nonconference" game. It ain't that flexible. You're going to run into problems later on. If we're going to divide the conference into the haves and have nots (and that's what's going to happen somewhat), then we need to say so. Somebody is gonna have to give for this to work correctly. And this is gonna have to be done face to face and not absentee or conference call wise.

For this to work, Jackson State, Grambling, and Southern CANNOT play each other every year. Schools will have to rotate teams from the other division off their schedule, and not play conference teams as non-conference opponents or we will be back at square one with a 9-game mandate again. And in saying that, I am still in favor of this move. The years Jackson State lose a home game against Southern or Grambling it could go after a big money game against a Division I-A school. Other SWAC schools could do the same now that we have flexibility. Plus, it opens the door for more classics or matchups against MEAC teams like FAMU and Hampton or other schools, possibly televised on ESPNU. It will make ADs work harder to schedule good games but that's their job.

This is why I said some schools will be upset at how this plays out. If the SWAC allows JSU to play SU and GSU every season, won't Bama St. want the same treatment?
