Seven or nine

The Southwestern Athletic Conference coaches have done their part of put an end to the nine-game mandate.

They voted 9-1 today in the SWAC's spring meetings to abolish the failed concept, which has been inconsistently applied and financially crippling for programs like Grambling that rely on lucrative non-conference contests to float the school budget.

Prairie View's Henry Frazier was the lone dissenter. The issue now moves through the conference ADs then on to the Council of Presidents, who ultimately will decide if the SWAC moves back to its old seven-game mandate.

Hal-le-lu-jah!!!

Now if we can get the numbskulls to vote for the 7-game mandate, all will be well!!!

I'm sure Frazier's dissention was due to past history associated with scheduling issues. I'm sure he can schedule schools like UH, SFA and UTEP. If nothing else, Texas College. At least he's able to put a better product on the field than in the past.

The AD's and Presidents will vote as their coaches vote. There's alot of changes that are about to happen in BCF and the majority of them will be between the MEAC and SWAC.

Now all they have to do is vote to allow only the two teams with the best records to participate in the SCG.

That's our man Frazier!  lol

I don't know JD. Wish I could agree wholly. Our problem now is that since we're on the rise to competitivity, no one wants to risk losing to PVAMU. (talk about a PR nightmare - how do you sell your school to future recruits who KNOW you got beat by ol' sorry PVAMU?) I talked to Cooley before last year's game and even he said that there was no way that he was for PV playing PQ next year (this fall) because Frazier and his staff were "great recruiters and have some talent that can play ball..."

Something tells me, though, that the SFAs or even (God forbid) SHSUs of the world MIGHT be worth a try - regionally.

We're arriving but we're STILL not there yet. We have a long way to go.

Well, it's about time.

I just hope they don't make the 7 game rotation more difficult than it needs to be.

SWAC, If you're listening, GO BACK TO THE 7 GAME ROTATION YOU CREATED IN 1998. Please don't screw up this process again.

WTF....

I have been saying it for YEARS...The SWAC conference resembles the SEC with the number of teams. All the SWAC has to do is pattern themselves in scheduling and scheduling policies after the SEC...

No it doesn't.

Thank you....

There's a big difference between 10 and 12 teams. The Swac is more closely resembling the Big10 with the exception of the 2 conferances.

But it's funny to see how the folks that pushed this 9 game mandate are now the ones crying about it.

Ok so the SEC has 12 teams and the SWAC has 10...what I am saying is we can still have the SCG, plus add some nice out of conference play and build more rivalry games in state as well as with the MEAC.

You really miss it on this one, in the SEC, all of the team (except maybe for Vanderbilt) are major draws and fill there own staduims to the brim with thier own fans and don't need the visiting team to bring nobody, and can afford to use the other home games to pay other teams to come in for few more big paydays. THis is not true for most of the swac.

Almost any team will jump at the chance to play an SEC school and if they are not a BCS team, will play them in thier own house and not demand a home and home.

THESE ARE MAJOR DIFFERENCES.

What I mean by resemble is:

East/West
Championship
Even Numbers

The SWAC just needs to have some strong PR to make it work. Games should be played in strategic locations to draw the crowds. Also, the SWAC needs to realize who the HEADLINE schools are for them; instead of assuming that every SWAC school will draw the people.

I don't recall too many people on this board pushing for a 9 game mandate. I know I have ALWAYS been against it.

I'm not talking about the people on this board, I was refering to the schools that made the initial push for it.

What is gonna be interesting to see is what non-conference matchups will we now see. If this was done to schedule the Allens, Concordias, and Texas Colleges of the world then I'm gonna be really pissed. I don't think this will be the case for Spears...he definitely wants to play regional D1's.

This shift really benefits Grambling as it allows us to play more payday games. Although I appreciate and recognize that Classic games are good money makers, I hope that we include at least one additional game each year for a state school. That would boost our season ticket sales...

Here is the problem. There are going to be teams in the SWAC that WILL play each other, but it won't be a conference game. If that is going to happen, then the 9 game mandate should remain.

Not if the SWAC office makes it clear that it will not be allowed.

What about us and J-State. Will they make it clear that we can't play them every year if it doesn't count in conference standing? Can of worms.

FINALLY!!!! :jump: Hopefully, this will be the last year for this insane mandate and now the SWAC can play more big-money non-conference games with the MEAC and other schools, including Division I-A programs.

and again I ask, why wouldn't it be allowed? Just because the games won't count in the standings, what's the problem? Besides, it's not like ANY of our schools can just put any ole team on our home schedule and automatically expect a sellout. And it's not like we're just loaded with dollars.

Lewis makes a damn good point (first time for everything :D ). There are indeed "MAJOR DIFFERENCES" betwen us and the SEC.

This is a good point. If, 5 years down the line, teams are playing everyone in the SWAC anyway, there may be a push to re-establish the 9 game mandate.

Yes there are differences but the premise is the same, both are trying to make money.

I understand your point, DSN. People are focusing on the differences in fan support and non-conference pull, but the basicstructure of the conference is very similar. The Big 10 is not the same because they have no split and they have basically a tie breaker situation when they have a tie at the top of the conference.

Jesus...thank you. Someone is finally thinking on lay man's terms. I think the new mandate will benefit schools like Southern and Grambling. If most of your schools were smart, you would hit more in state game rivalries.
