Is Grambling The Only Team Playing Defense in Black College Football?

The Rattlers can't get in this conversation. Giving up 25 points per game for the last three.

But I will throw Tennessee State Into the conversation. 7 to FAMU and 0 to Howard.

Gram has played AAMU, PV & Alcorn. These are 3 of the most impotent offense in America. Let's not get carried away. One would have thought that JSU cured their defensive woes before last nite. Playing the aforemetioned teams are not a good guage for measuring your defense. In essence, the verdict is still out on Grams defense. I think this thread would have been better suited for the smack board.

Gram's defense is not as good as it was last year and since Hymes has not been pressured, how good the offense has become is yet to be seen.

Actually, GSU's defense is better. The reason I say this is because of the depth on the defensive line. GSU rotates approximately 12 guys. Seriously, the first two units rotate during the first half and into the third and fourth quarter the
"third" unit rotates into the game. Some of the younger d linemen are so athletic that they play on kickoff teams.

The linebacking corp of Taylor, Dukes, and Robinson is strong! We call them THE FIRM...cuz the defense never rests. All three are tenacious tacklers and have the ability to blitz or drop into coverage. This front seven manhandles the run!

Our secondary is solid. Corner back Calvin Spears is a pre-season All-American and this selection is justified. Spears is so solid that teams rarely throw in his area. Comes up very well on run support and sweeps. Smart and heady...hard to fool. The "other" corner is Chris Brown. Teams decision to avoid Spears and pick on Chris has back fired. Chris currently leads the team with 6 int's in 4 games. At 6'3' 200lbs, Brown is a true hitter and excellent cover guy. Strong Safety Kalvin Pearson is an All-American. This guy is definitely going to play on Sundays. Smart and Heady, Strong as a linebacker and runs like a free safety. Completely destroys anything over the middle. Our fourth starter is Denmark Reid. If I had to describe Reid, it would be smooth criminal. Great cover guy with a nose for the ball. Great hands and a sure open field tackler. Looks like he's chilling (I guess so with the guys lined up in the front seven and other db's) as he call coverage signals.

I know it seems like smack, but it really isn't. This team is so talented that it's scary. The team defense is AWESOME.

I would say TnSt has the best defense in Black College. Giving up 7 to AAMU, 7 to Famu, 10 to SEMO, and 0 to Howard.

This maybe true, but I saw a lot of plays that our guys couldn't have made last year. Maybe that's because it was just the second game.

hate to kick a dog when it's down, but didn't ICON put up 30 on AAMU?

Gram has a complete team. can score in various ways.

Attack Dog,

I'm not disputing what you saw...but consider that in last year matchups, there was no margin for error. The games were so close that the defense had to be focused on every play. Perhaps the score (margin) had something to do with the defense not being as sharp as last year against the Bulldogs!

Ditto Rattlermania and Tiger1!!! :D

Tennessee State is playing solid defense. The offense gets out of the gates a bit slow, but that's been offset by what many has dubbed the stingest defense in D1-AA so far this season.

If you really want to know the truth, SU's defense is probably the best in the league minus the non-conference games and we have played stiffer competition than GSU in conference.

Our defensive line is big, fast, and deep and our outside cover men are some of the best in the conference.

We will know for sure after this weekend.

I thought GSU's defense was the best in the SWAC last year, but they still gave up nearly 400 yards to a then-shaky Robert Kent. I'm wondering how your DB's will stack up against our recievers.

We both played A&M. You won by 3, We won by 27
You played AlState and won, We played Alcorn (who beat AlState) and won.

You played PineBluff (who only scored 19 on MSVU) and won.
We played PVU (who scored 34 on Valley) and won.

How does that make your conference schedule tougher?

If your defensive line is so deep, why did yall only play about 6 guys during Homecoming. I was at the game and was checking out my frat (#93) your right defensive end. I remember because he played on dayum near every defensive snap.

Are these the same two cover guys that Northwestern's Craig Nall lit up in the opener? They must not be the same two that Tulane kept picking up first downs against? What other passing team have you faced? Pine Bluff? A&M? Okay, yall did good against AlState. It's not your fault that Kennedy had missed a lot of fall reps because of grades.

We'll find out about this defense this weekend won't we?

MB,

I know that you dont believe some of the things that you are typing. If you have seen S.U. defense, then you know that before it is all over the rest of the SWAC foes (including Gram) will get hit hard and have a dismal offensive performance. If you went to the Tulane game you also know that this team was aided in the 1st half by atrocious spots on first downs and zebra assistance. But, that did not stop our defense from putting Ramsey on his can 5 times. News flash: There is no SWAC team that has an offense comparible to toolame. I noticed you conveniently left out Northwestern in your analysis. TCU only held them to seven less points than the Jags. Do you think there is any defense in the SWAC better than TCU (You know the folks that gave Nebraska the game of their lives). Sorry MB, but Gram is headed to the 1-AA playoffs with a 9-2 record (10-1) if you can manage to escape Jackson. But, when you get to New Orleans Gram will get beat down. I would not be suprised if your offense does not score. I think you people better focus on Pine Bluff.

You mean the same Northwestern that got their azzes kicked by Oklahoma State and then by Sam Houston State. That sorry azz Northwestern!

Man, please...just get you some Preparation H to help with the swelling cuz the GMen are putting together a season to give you a case of QRAO (Quite Red And Obvious)!!!!

Let me get this straight.

Alabama State scored 61 on JSU, but only crossed the fifty once on SU on their own and only scored with 3 minutes left in the game. Since Alcorn beat Alabama State by three which beat JSU by three who Grambling beat by 17, that makes Alcorn better than Alabama State and Jackson State. But, since Valley Scored 36 on JSU, that makes them better than Howard who only scored 17 on JSU. Alabama A&M is better than Pine-Bluff because they scored 20 on SU and Pine Bluff only got 14 but Pine Bluff is better than Alabama State because they only crossed the fifty with some help once against SU against whom Pine Bluff scored 14 points. Texas Southern is bettern than Alabama A&M even though they lost to them since Pine Bluff is better than Alabama State. SU had more yards against Northwestern than Nebraska did against TCU which only scored 3 more points against Northwestern than SU did but held Nebraska to same amount of points that SU scored on Northwestern so SU should be able to hold Nebraska to less points than Alabama State scored on Alcorn which is better than JSU which lost to the same Alabama State team that lost to Alcorn that lost badly to Fort Valley State.

So Fort Valley State has the best team in all of college football, bar none.

This I get this right?

LMAO @ Diesel

Good point. I learned long ago that you never compare scores in BCF. Each game stands on its on. Just because team A beats team B, and team B beats team C, doesn't at all mean that team A will beat team C. It just doesn't work that way in the weakly-coached SWAC and MEAC, which (in a sad way) is what makes our brand of football so interesting to watch. Unpredictability is our trademark.
