In the SWAC, “Our limits have been reached,â€￾ says Braddy

Right! I wished that this forum was done 3-5 years ago before the economy went to hell.

JSU, be honest...

Without Alcorn, SU, and occasionally Grambling, where would your attendence be for a season?

What the SWAC needs is a Commissioner who is not going to "suck up" to certain schools within the conference. It's 2011 and some traditions have got
to go in order for us to prosper in competition with other conferences.

I'm done...

If you look at TSNU and consider we had a higher attendance average over everyone in the SWAC except JSU. It looks like JSU will do just fine in attendance with out being in the SWAC.

JSU please stop telling yourself lies. Your attendance took a big hit under James Bell because you were losing. Moving up you would never finish above .500. Your record would be 5-6 at best. We all know our people our band wagon folks. No excitement and a losing record and your attendance would drop with in 2 years. Ask Troy St, they aren't nothing now they are FBS.

Dude we played Delta State a non SWAC school and still had better fan support than your biggest home game speak what u know instead of talking bs........

random thoughts on the topic:

FIRST - We can FORGET moving to 1-A in football with the level of financial support seen at our HBCUs. That's for starters. The school budgets are already strapped and alumni support is non-existent outside of buying a ticket to the game.

...and NT, my opinion is that that line of thinking is the problem. We said the same thing 20 years ago. We can't worry about right now when we should be worried about 20 years from now. Boise State could barely compete with JSU or Grambling 20-25 years ago when we played in the playoffs. 20 years from now, we will be saying the same thing or we will be out of business totally. Also, you say we don't have the money..so let me ask you this: How much will it cost us to be 1-A? Most people seem to think that we need 100 million gazillion dollars to be 1-A and that is not true from what I understand. Also, let's say that we don't have any support now, how does staying in 1-AA get us support especially considering that the glory years are gone? What is the benefit of "doing nothing"? We can play the insanity game forever and keep doing the same stuff to get the same result. Going to the playoffs is not going to get us better athletes or more people in the stands. This is 1-A football and promise you that if a kid up here could play for a traditonal doormat like Temple or nearby 1-AA powerhouse Villanova or Delaware, they are going to Temple.

Also, maybe not you, but we go crazy over playing 1-A teams. You have fans running up to Miss State to pay 40 dollars for a ticket but trying to get a hook up to a JSU game. If we were 1-A, we could play 7-8 HBCUs and then we could play 4-5 1-A teams for what they really are "fundraisers". We could make another 2 million dollars by doing that alone. Not to mention the possibility of getting some 1-A teams to Jackson even if we have to do 2 for 1 deals, etc... You have Grambling going to ULM twice when they have already said that they pretty much outnumbered them the last time the two played. If GSU was 1-A, that could be a home game for GSU.

I guess my point is what is the difference in being broke as a 1-A team as opposed to being broke as a 1-AA team. Our teams are in demand because we love white folks. I think the highest attended game all year at GaTech was our game against SCState. Our alums didn't care about the game. Season ticket holders were giving season tickets away.... I got mine from a season ticket holder here in Philly who was not gonna waste money on a plane ticket to go see that. However, SCState fans probably came 20K strong but they can't get 5K down to FAMU. These teams will pay for us becasue they know we will bring the fans and basically cover our own expense. We got fewer when we played Jacksonville State.

What you are doing is what has traditionally happened...making a decision in your mind without doing one single study or economic evaluation. You just said, "we can't". The very least we can do is a study.

How can you not worry about right now if alums are not SUPPORTING the university... where is the money going to come from? Help me... I think you are twisting my comments slightly... Read carefully. I AGREE we need to do something. I just don't want us to make the mistake of thinking a move will solve our problems.... A struggling 1-AA school moving up with NO EXTRA support will be an OUT OF BUSINESS 1-A school in no time....

Is this not common sense...

Prime example of a typical SWAC imbecile who doest want to grow or advance...Just look at the college he attended the true meaning of a school that doesn't want to do better for itself..........black people are quick to try to bring others down! :smh:

They may not be but I bet you could not pay them to go back to the lowly 1-AA. Same with Marshall. They ran 1-AA but now they are happy being 1-A doormats. Membership has it's priviledges.

And actually under ****, our attendance was not as bad as people want to make it out to be. Yes, there was a drop but it was not horrible. That UAPB game was the exception, not the rule. You saw the numbers in the clarionledger about our attendance during the **** years. We were still at the top of the SWAC.

Quit hating CEE... Troy is doing pretty well! The last 5 years they have won 8-9 games and at least a share of the Sun Belt Conference Championship. JSU has a larger fan base than Troy in a larger metro area and larger stadium. I have not doubt that JSU could move up to the Sun Belt and do well. A home and home with Southern Miss and a game or two against a former SWAC foe would be enough to meet their attendance minimums right there. Now conference games against Ark. State, ULM, ULL and Troy won't sell out, but they would bring at least as many fans as come to their games against TSU, PVAM, UAPB. Plus Jackson could schedule schools like UAB and Memphis and would someday get an SEC team to come there (probably South Carolina), trust me they'd be able to cover themselves.

The big question is whether they would get an invite from the Sun Belt Conference. Geographically speaking it would be intriguing, because Mississippi is currently the only deep-south state in which the conference does not currently have a footprint.

JSU lost 18 playoff games. If anything JSU lost its potential 20 years ago.

How many did ya'll even try to win?
ZERO...........OK.

It continues to amuse me that wack azz schools that never went because they were never good enough to go want to talk shat about JSU's record all the time.

Attendance will be the least of our worries with any move. U can fool yourself to believe otherwise, but our number speak for themselves. I'm concerned about our sustainability financially. We HAVE TO support in order for any move (laterally or up) *especially up* to be effective. period.

U have to remember when discussing something like this with AAMU.... they moved UP to come to the SWAC. We are working from two completely different schools of thought/ levels of expectation/ standards...

This is just pure hate.

BTW:
Since 2002, Troy has been to 4 bowl games. When they was FCS, they would beat the slop out of A@M and they would beat the slop out of ya'll now. Yet here you are talking about how "nothing" they are.

I know.
And they forming all this low attendance crap on the way the FCS OVC treated Tennessee State. A move up would have the opposite effect on attendance. That with real revenue sharing would off-set any little money that Bamma A@m would bring to Jackson. He about dwindling attendance at JSU IF we moved up, how sorry Troy is, and A@M can't even draw 2,000 to a home football game now on their campus for homecomming.

To me the question is how much money do we need and how much more money could we make if we were 1-A. In the end it may balance out. Or in the end, we may lose or we may gain. I don't know but I think we need to find out. I don't think JSU can do this alone but right now, our budget is 6.5 million dollars. If we can make even an extra million from 1-A games and earmarked that money, you could start to build an infrastructure. We all know that money begets money. We could immediately spend 80K on two more strength coaches. We could spend another 80K on some two more people to help in the AD office. We could spend another 80K to hire two more people for the alumni office or get Ann outta the ticket office. These are just examples, and we have only spent $240K. You always say that one of the main things is that we are understaffed. Let's find ways to get out of that. Staying in 1-AA certainly won't help it. It never has.

I agree.

yall may not want to hear this BUT.... the entire conference needs to put pride aside and move down to D2.

what was the score of the AAMU and Troy State game? Tell me when they beat the "slop" out of us.

One thing this post shows is that you all don't understand the difference from hate and reality. You can't comprehend in your small mind that your endowment first of all in no where near Marshall or Troy. Not one of your alumni is willing to invest money into your program as a big time booster. That none of our presidents have the foresight to care about big time sports. That our fans like entertainment and come to things they can relate to in this world. The truth hurts.

All of that is debatable. We don't know who would want to come to Memorial or to an on-campus JSU stadium. USM says they would to Jackson if we were 1-A but how long would that relationship last? Would Memphis come to Jackson? I think JSU would bring out 25K fans if we knew a school like Tulane would come to Jackson and it would be great for Tulane to bring about 10K fans. But those are the intangibles that I call a risk right now. Moving up would probably cause us to spend more but we also have the potential to make more (in my opinion). But without a doubt, we have the potential to get more TV time, better recruits, better coaches, better sponsorships, and guaranteed payouts for azz whoopings. I don't believe in 1-AAs playing 1-A teams but if we were 1-A, I say let's call LSU tomorrow. I'm sure they would pay us 600K+.

do you think Troy would also "beat the slop out of Jsu now?

Oh lawd.................here comes the endless bamma non-sense.
Lets get this over with since the foolishness is about to start.

That is not the issue but since you asked in your backhanded way, TROY would have the advantage over JSU and yes they should win the game but JSU WOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN. Bamma A@M have absoutly no chance of beating TROY...........NON, ZIP, ZILCH and you know it. My point is smalltime thinking that go on here. How can you call a 8 win a year team that go to bowl games on the FBS level as a mid-major "NOTHING".

You shole is right Cee.

Just because you might average more in attendance than the next school, don't fool yourself into thinking you got big bucks.

My only point is that nothing can be done absent of increased support. It doesn't pan out... A large chunk of whatever happens at this juncture will be 'organization building'... We have to find a way to galvanize the fan-base, alumni-base and create a culture of support if we plan to advance. Moving to another conference without doing that will only multiply our problems. (am i making sense...) All of these changes aren't monumental... Even in our current format we (JSU) give away money on JSU events. We could make some really easy changes i.e. pulling out of dead-end classics and redirecting the economic impact back to the campus.
