I am watching a Oklahoma State sports show as I type and this black mom of a player is talking about how happy she is about her move to Stillwater, OK from Brooklyn, NY.

I seriously doubt a family would move from NY to OK unless some cash exchanged hands.

I'm going to move folks near PV. That should not be a problem. 18 miles away is a fancy neighborhood where are President decides to run off to.

I'm not familiar with Stillwater, but I do know it is close to Ponca City, OK. Trust me, if you are not a native or from a similar environment, there has to be a very strong incentive to move there.

This is not new, Rasheed Wallace's mom move to North Carolina while he was at Carolina. So it must not be against the NCAA rules to relocated gaurdians and find them employment.

In Huntsville it happens in HIGH SCHOOL.... poor players getting NEW SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLES. hint hint... Marvin Stone, who just got kicked off of Kentucky's team and transferred to Lousiville.

I don't know if she works. They say she's at all the hoops practices.

In the Summer of 99 I had an internship with ORNL in Oak Ridge, Tn! Its a small town bout 15 minutes away from UT in Knoxville. It was there I began to understand why so many black athletes are lured to the D-1 schools. It mainly has to do with rich alumni boosters who will slide thousands of dollars under the table at the drop of a dime:eek2: I cant count how many buildings in Knoxville had T. Martin and Peerless Price painted all over them......I cant count how many times I would be on the "STRIP" and people would mistake me for a UT player because of my high school classmates who were on the team:cool:!!!! Its kinda hard to turn down that much popularity and free money at such a young age:eek2: :eek2:

I also wanna give a shout out to GIBBS Giblets.......for those of yall who dont know that is the female welcoming committee for recruits at UT;) :eek2: :eek2:

EXACTLY...

I dont know why people hate on black athletes for going to white colleges. If I was an All American in any sport, I would do the same thing. Some say, white colleges USE Black athletes, when black colleges do the same damn thing. White schools slide you so much money under the table. I just look at the players that went from high school that went to SEC Schools, all of them are driving brand new SUV'S. Wayne Madkin has brand new Explorer, Rashaad Moore (Tennessee) has a brand new Yukon. White schools FLY instead of riding buses. They stay in top of the line hotels instead of Holiday Inns. It isnt a hard decision. Plus you have alumni slippin you money under the table.

No wonder AAMU's football team sucks

I'm glad the blue chippers that we've just recruited didn't think that way.

This year we've already got commitments from the #1 rated QB and WR reciever in the state, and the second best running back in the state. Last year we signed a first team all-state wide reciever and the #1 rated JUCO running back in the country. All those kids turned down offers from the big boys just so they could play at Blue Death Valley.

Contrary to popular belief, a strong HBCU can attract blue chip talent also.

So I am suppose to go to a college just because it is BLACK? I am going to go to whatever school gives me what I am lookin for in an education and athletics. FOR ME, I would rather play in front of 100,000 every home game. I would rather play on TV every week, where my folks could see me. I would want TOP NOTCH facilities. Top notch tutors to help me with my studies. That is just ME.... you may not agree with me.

If you feel that way, then why did you even bother to go to AAMU in the first place? What, you couldnt' get into Auburn or U of A?

This might sound hard to believe, but going to a HBCU is not considered a step down to some people. Not for regular students like you and me, or blue chips athletes like the ones that just committed to A&T.

There might not be 100,000 seat stadiums and mulit-million dollar TV deals, but there are many other advantages that HBCU's have over white schools. If I have to sit here right now and list them all to you then you are truly a lost cause.

thrilla,

You are dealing with small time thinkers man. They don't understand what it's like to recruit and sign blue-chippers. In 1999, JSU recruiting class was ranked around #45 of all D1 schools.

Kudos to A&T for going after the best. Some peep understand that signing with Tennessee, Florida, FSU, etc... don't mean isht if yo azz is on the bench. Who remembers the bench riders, even when the game is in front of 100K and on TV.

All of ya'll can talk about HBCU's recruiting "blue chippers", but truth be told, HBCU "blue chipper" talent can't really even compare to that of PWC's. That's just the truth.

So Unknown, you mean to tell me that not only is Dwight Mann's ice colder...but his chips or more bluer than ours too?

*SMH* I guess I didn't get that memo.

I always thought that a good player was a good player no matter were he signed. I thought 4.3 speed registered the same on a black stopwatch as it did on a white one.

I guess Dwight Mann's first team all-starters are somehow heads and shoulders above our first team all-staters, huh?

I guess our rival100 prospects might be OK for c**n schools like A&T or JSU, but his rival100 propects are the real deal, huh?

I guess when he goes out and signs the best Qb and wide receiver in his state it means something, but when us negroes do it there has to be some kind of catch to it, right?

I tell ya-- I wonder why some of you cats even decided go to HBCUs in the first place. You obviously have no pride in your own and believe that everything Dwight Mann has is better.

Not UTK!

This is no lie. One of my relatives {J. Jones} was a running back at UTK in the early 80's. H ewas the best running back in the state. They built his parents a home, a new truck and he had a new Camaro Z28 every year. The sad part is he did not finish college, no pro football. Now, he's working at Burger King.

PWC blue chippers are better? WTF?!? Man I could have sworn that ablue chip rated player was a blue chipper no matter where he signs. Now PWC may sign more Blue chip rated talent.......

And even though the majority of players think like Dahill, there are still many who don't always think that way. Yes finacially there are perks to playing for the larger PWC's. They have boosters w/ deep pockets, and having been a recipient of a 100 dollar hand shake myself, it is hard to turn down. But when choosing a college one needs to consider alot more than if he can get a new ride and some gear out of the deal.

As stated earlier, PWC use players to win just like HBCU do. But at most HBCU, at least there is a concern for you to get an educaton. And I know for a fact that most of the PWC's can't say the same.

I bet your cousin has the cleanest Z-28 at that Burger King. How many hours was he away from graduating? I've heard horror stories of how some blue chippers would go and play at these 100K seat stadiums, get paid by alumni and boosters, and get mom's a new house and car. But once that four years of eligibility is up and they've accumulated a total of 17 hours towards their major it is like the stroke of midnight and that carriage has now turned into a pumpkin and they are back where they started with (that same pot to piss in).

Honestly, 99.9% of our HBCU's can't afford to buy all that materialism... all we can do is give them a chance to play football, basketball, track, baseball ... whatever and give them an education. How many college athletes actually make it to the next level? Less than 3% last time I checked

News flash folks:

A blue chipper is a blue chipper is a blue chipper whether he signed at the University of Arkansas or the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Texas A&M or Prairie View A&M, University of Maryland or University of Maryland at Eastern Shore. It is all about what HE or she does for himself during those four years. Scouts will find you if you played in front of 1,255 fans or 112,555 fans because that's what they get paid for.

OK.....so, with all the blue chippers A&T gets for this upcoming season thrilla, if A&T played NC State head to head......who would win? I mean...you got blue chippers and they are the same as NC State's right?

A blue chipper is a blue chipper is a blue chipper whether he signed at the University of Arkansas or the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Texas A&M or Prairie View A&M, University of Maryland or University of Maryland at Eastern Shore.

You're wrong, C-leb.

According to Unknown, Dwight Mann's blue chippers have more of a deep navy hue...while HBCU blue chippers are mostly a lighter, columbia blue shade.

I guess we will agree to disagree....

I am telling you for ME....if I was a blue chipper in any sport.... i am going to go to a top notch program. I want to play for the best. I want the best facilities. You cant tell me that I should lower my standards just because the school is an HBCU. If I want to play in a large stadium, have a state of the art weightroom, indoor practice facility, stay in 5 star hotels, ride in planes to games, get fed like a champ, I will choose the school that fits what I want.

That is just like saying I should vote for somebody just because they are black, even though the white candidate addresses all of my issues the way I feel they should be addressed.

And I am tired of people saying that white schools only use black people. Black schools do the same damn thing. Both situations, the school is giving the student a free education and the player is giving the school his/her talent. If you aint no good, black schools dont give a damn about you, just like white school wont. When white schools bring in a recruit... the red carpet is rolled out for them. All the alumni are there to greet the recruit. He is givin a jersey with his name on it, given a standing ovation at the basketball/football game, etc. What is done at a Black school.

My 2 cents:

I agree with both sides. I hate to see a black star player go to an PWC when he knows his grades are suspect and he doesn't intend to take advantage of his opportunity and use the PWC instead of using him. Someone mentioned Rasheed Wallace and his Mom moving down. I am sure UNC hooked it up, but like most UNC players he took advantage of his opportunity and made it to the pros and then came back to finish his degree. So I can't blame him for picking UNC over any HBCU. Just look at our state of being in basketball. So it just depends of the kid. These PWC's love to prey on the poor black kids and their eager family. Notice the middle class and academic minded bros like David Boston and Donovan Mc Nabb have less issues going to the PWC's. They are not in awe of all the sell tactics they use. They go for the right reason and not the money/wrong reason.

You see you have to be of the right frame of mind to go to a PWC even if you are a regular student let alone a ball player. Some kids will excel no matter where they go. I also applaud those stars who could have went to the PWC, but chose the HBCU instead, like the Robert Kent's of the world. It is all about the individual.

I do agree if I had a kid who say was an All -American football player and he also wanted to major in say Communications/TV. All the schools are calling because he has the grades as well. He is a QB and say JSU, SU and Gram all want him. But so do Syracuse, Miami, and other PWC's. Now if he wants it all and he can handle it and some of these black kids can, why would I shove SU down his throat when Syracuse's Communication program is better. I mean you have to look at the whole picture on what is better for the kid.

HBCU's are not always best for some black kids. Depends on the individual. And all schools use players to a certain extent. You can flunk out of an HBCU just like a PWC. What I get mad at is those borderline academic players going to a PWC when they need to be at an HBCU to tighten up academically and be some place where people care if they graduate. Instead they go to the PWC and do nothing and end up bad off after the PWC is through with them. Some of the PWC's are okay and have decent track records with black players and them getting out of school. It also depends on the coach. I wouldn't send a kid to play for Archie Cooley at any HBCU he was coaching to save my life. I would send a kid to play for a John Chaney of Temple or a Ty Willingham. It's pros and cons on both sides. Just keep our kids away from the Ole Miss's, Texas A&M's, and other PWC's who blatantly don't care for minorities at there school at all. We just have to educate these kids and their families as our fellow HBCUs recruit against the PWC's.
Good discussion from both sides of the coin.

Robber: That 1999 JSU class was actually ranked 88 in Div. 1 while the Grambling class was ranked right behind you at 89.

Thanks for straightening me out thrilla. I was kinda sorta confused with that color blue thing.

But I could have sworn when I was running track for Texas Southern when we would go to the big track meets... you know... like the ones at Texas Relays (in front of 35,000 fans) or Drake Relays (in front of 29,000 fans) for four years in a row that when I turned around to see people behind me at the finish line that had jerseys on their chest that read Baylor, Texas, Syracuse, UCLA, Wisconsin and Miami I just knew somethin' was wrong because they had better facilties, better training and better tutors than my school off 3100 Cleburne.

I shouldn't have be beating them. I'm confused. Somebody please help me.

BTW: The reason why NCSU would be favored to win is not because their blue chippers are neccessarily better than ours, it's because they have a bigger recruiting budget and can find more blue chippers to play at every position. .

For the most part we get most of our talent from NC, SC, and some parts of VA. We might not be able to fill every position on our team with blue chip talent, but we can probably add several blue chip skills players each signing period and remain competitive with the big boys.

NCSU, on the other hand, can afford to go out all over the country and recruit any players they want. They have the money to spend on travel fees for their coaching staffs and out-of-state scholarships for half their players. Most HBCUS' dont.

However, when it comes down to getting the best players in our own state, we have done better than almost any other local d1 school during the last two years. Before that, we were severely hendered by our lack of facilites, but now that Blue Death Valley has been revamped there is no blue chipper in the region we feel we can't recruit.

Unknown, you really need to stop thinking so smalltime and wake up and see the light. This is 2002; we's free.

Great black players can go to great black schools and excell just as much as a great black player at a PWC. Just cause Dwight Mann told you that a player's talent would suddenly erode just as soon as he stepped on a black campus, it doesn't mean it's true.

Track is different. That is the one sport where HBCU's can definitely compete with white schools. AAMU women have won plenty of D2 national championships indoor and outdoor and have sent many athletes to the Olympics. Jearl Miles is the latest track star. Everybody knows about the famous TIGER BELLS. Probably the most famous group of black track stars ever. I recently attended a basketball game at Tennessee State where all former Tiger Bells were honored. There were about 50 of them. They started announcing accomplishments and i was like DAMN. One year (60 something) the whole 4 x 1 or 4x 4 team was Tiger Bells from TSU. We all know what Wilma Rudolph and Edwin Moses did. The indoor track at TSU is named after Wilma Rudolph and the outdoor track is named after Edwin Moses.
