Ijust seen what PWC's really do to recruit

What do you mean different?

The only difference is that track is an individual sport. But the track and field complexes, weightrooms, tutors, alumni support and boosters are all the same when it comes to football.... at a disproportionate disadvantage.

answer this, if you were a blue chip player and wanted to play for LSU but they signed 3 blue chippers at your same position, would you want to waste time competing for a spot or go somewhere where you can play right away.

Really, what is the difference at the schools? If your major isn't something that is super special might as play at a HBCU. A general studies degree at LSU is the same as SU.

I agree with that PF. If you know that the school has already recruited people ahead of you then why bother. I wouldn't let my ego get in the way. I would go to where I could play right away or at least pretty soon. And to the point of a general studies degree being the same , I agree.

I am talking about those kids who are serious about what they want to major in as well as play ball for a good program that will allow them to show their talent on the field. Then you have to consider the school's reputation in your chosen field, no matter if you are a star or not. Why go to TXSU just because their football team is better than PV when you want to major in Engineering. My point is that a kid should look at all variables in making his decision to go to college. Whether it's a HBCU or PWC. Like I said if the kids start thinking about using these schools instead of getting used then things would be better. I know if I was wanting to major in Art History to be an art critic one day and I was an all world HS player, not to many HBCU's would be on my list. Because we just don't produce alot of those type of people. I probably would be looking at the Ivy League schools for that Major. Or somewhere like Stanford, Northwestern or ND. So as I said depending on the kid it might not make sense for him to go to an HBCU. The problem is these black kids are going to the PWCs for the wrong reasons alot of the time. But you are right if the kid can find his major at a HBCU that has a good quality football program as well then he should make that choice. That's why I chose SU for NROTC and Physics over any white school that had the same. But we must remember alot of ball players know that only a hand full of our HBCUs have their ish together. And I don't mean facilities either. We all have those problems except AAMU. I just mean we do have some sad azz coaching. If I was a Star HS basketball player , I wouldn't have no HBCU on my list. That's because we have no coaches. Even our best teams are not that good. Hampton may be the exception. So answer me this should a kid go to a HBCU when the program is garbage just because? Just asking.

unknown,

You do realize that NCSU can give 22 more scholarships than A&T, don't you??? You do realize that after years of giving 22 more scholarships that NCSU has MORE blue chippers. That's why they are more likely to win the games. Same for any other I-A squad over a I-AA squad. They got more blue chippers.

I'm just wondering how Darnell Kennedy wound up at Bama State. He was too damn good to waste his time at an HBCU. I wonder what went wrong???

I'm still wondering why these cats bothered to go to a HBCU themselves.

Obviously, they feel it is an inferior institution of highr learning.

No Bornthrilla, I think you have some of us wrong. I am glad I went to SU, no regrets. I don't feel SU is inferior to any institution overall. Now are there programs that SU is hurting in?, yes there is. And I would advise a kid accordingly to other HBCUs with better programs that SU's. And if that kid asked about a PWC and I knew it was a good program I would say so as well. You would have to be stupid to go to any school if your major there is not accredited no matter if it is a HBCU. I am avid supporter of all HBCUs and if I had to pay for a future kid of mine to go to college, then he/she will take my money to a HBCU. If they want to go to a PWC they better have a scholarship or like Panther Fan said they have a special major no HBCU has for me to pay for them to go to a PWC.

But all I was saying HBCUs are not for every black kid or ball player. It is an individual thing and you just hope the kid made the right decision. Just like going to a PWC wasn't for me unless it would have been the Naval Academy, which would have been for a different reason and I have no problem recommending that PWC to any black kid if they have a interest in the Navy the same as I do for SU's NROTC program. I think we just have to be open minded and not get tunnel vision and think ALL black kids belong at an HBCU. Unfortunately some don't. Could you even imagine Ricky Williams (UT/ Saints)at a black school? It's not an inferiority complex at all. But like my college band director always told us. "To thineself be true."

Robber,
That was a good post. The number of scholarships the 1-A schools have is one of big advantages over us. I don't know if I would use Darnell Kennedy as an example. He probably had grade issues that made 1-A schools back off. I think Robert Kent is a better example. He could have went anywhere and he chose JSU. Kent has a good head on his shoulders unlike alot of our players. Plus someone around him exposed him to the pros and cons of going to a PWC. Especially the ones in the Sip. Could you imagine him wasting away at Ole Miss sitting behind Eli Manning if Kent had of signed there.

IT PUZZLES ME EVERYDAY WHY A BLACK ATHLETE WOULD EVEN GO THESE SCHOOLS KNOWING THEY ARE NO WANTED BUT TO DO ONE THING.AFTER THEY DO IT IT IS OVER.I HAVE HEARD TALES OF ALUMNI SHUNS TOWARDS BLACKS.THE FUNNY THING HAD IT NOT FOR INTEGRATION WE WOULD NOT HAVE THIS DISCUSSION.WHY? Type the whole damn thing... I hate when people nitpick little sentences out of what I say. Did I state what my standards would be IF I was an All American. I said for ME, I would want to play in front of 100,000, excellent pratice facilities, indoor practice facilities, ride planes to games, stay in 5 star hotels on the road.... etc

Dont just type one sentence out of what I say.... You cant tell me that Bama St or AAMU has better facilities than AU or UA. Last time I remember the baseball team at ASU was playing on the football practice field.

DaHill,

So why did you lower your standards to attend A&M, I know that Alabama and Auburn have better everything.

Well, since you asked, I'll quote the whole thing this time!!!

I dont know why people hate on black athletes for going to white colleges. If I was an All American in any sport, I would do the same thing. Some say, white colleges USE Black athletes, when black colleges do the same damn thing. White schools slide you so much money under the table. I just look at the players that went from high school that went to SEC Schools, all of them are driving brand new SUV'S. Wayne Madkin has brand new Explorer, Rashaad Moore (Tennessee) has a brand new Yukon. White schools FLY instead of riding buses. They stay in top of the line hotels instead of Holiday Inns. It isnt a hard decision. Plus you have alumni slippin you money under the table.
It must be a young thing if you don't see anything wrong with these guys selling themselves to whatever school can "slide you so much money under the table" or give you a "brand new SUV" or let you "stay in top of the line hotels."

If you think its okay to allow yourself to be bought like that, then so be it. :(

That was a great post STC

I DONT PLAY NO SPORTS.

Just speechless....

Lawd, just swing on down here and get me. I've seen all I need to see and all I've needed to hear now. :smh:

Having been a participant on both academic and atheletic recruiting I know how hard it can be to choose a university.

You are subjected to so many different offers and perks that at 17-18 years old it can be somewhat overwhelming. The key is to be able to see through the bull and make a choice that is best for you....the individual. And that choice has to be made looking at the entire picture. You can't just look at academics, or the sports programs. You have to look at both and you have to look at the social environment that you will be subjecting yourself into. The problem is that too many of our young black men only see one side of the equation. They think just like Dahill in that all they want is the cars, clothes, flights, and hotels. Even if it will all last no longer than 5 years....unless you make it to the league. And that is a very select few. They fail to take advantage of the the school while the school is taking full advantage of them. I think the problem lies in that these kids don't have anyone to advise them to look at the big picture. To look at more than just the present and to look past your immediate future. And sometimes the parents are no more equipped to guide them than the kids are. I made my choice based on what was best for me. I could have gone to Harvard, Stanford, Carnegie Melon, MIT for academics. And I could have gone to Kentucky, Southern Miss, baylor etc for football. but I chose the school that was the best fit for me. And for some of these kids, they are making the decision based on that principle. The problem is that most of these kids are making the decision based solely on what car an alumni can provide, flying in planes, staying at 5 star hotels, etc. Not realizing that when your time is up, so will your perks. And if you haven't taken the steps to ensure yourself the lifestyle thatyou seemed to want to bad....you will be arsed out. That new SUV doesn't get to go home with you.

I don't knock a players for going to a PWC. I just knock them when they make that decision with their eyes wide shut. And I knock the PWC's for misleading them. I know HBCU's wil do the same and have done the same. but no one here can argue with the fact that as an HBCU student, whether you play sports or not. The faculty as a whole generally gives a dayum about you and your future.......even when you don't!

DAHILL,

Whether read in its entirety, one sentence, left to right, right to left, upside down, inverse, reverse or however other ways it could be read, this statement still applies:

What for.... you act like I am some black dude trying to be a white boy. Anybody that knows me knows that I dont like white people for real. I have never went to a white school. I am the type of student that will use them instead of letting them use me. I have good grades, I wouldnt be what you call the "border line students"

And yall are being hypocrital... you are saying that our schools are better, but you are saying that the students with border line grades should attend the HBCU's. What kind of message is that sending. Are you saying that our schools should only take the students who couldnt make it at other universities?

I don't think that anyone is saying that you are trying to act white(whatever that is)but many are concerned with your apparent justification of selling one's sole just to say that I played football here. The SEC and Big 12 are notorious for having low graduation rates ranging from 29-34%.What happens to 2/3 of the players that don't make it or wash out of the NFL in their first 2 years?Steve Wilson may have lost his football mind but many of hs players went on and became very successful after football with their degree in hand as accountants, engineers, teachers, physical therapists etc....What are the former football players from UTK,AU,UAL,UGA,OU,etc... doing?Sadly the for too many the answer is nothing. You chose an HBCU because you saw the best chance for personal growth on a social and intellectual level.

C-LeB28

He played under Majors, never graduated. According to my brother, he had a total of 20 or 21 hours after four years of college.

DAHILL

I think the outdoor track at TSU is named after Ralph Boston.

As a student at Tennessee A & I University (now Tennessee State), Boston improved dramatically as a long jumper in 1960, his senior season, when he concentrated on the event in order to make the Olympic team. In previous seasons, he had also competed in the high jump, sprints, and high hurdles, and he ranked only fourth in the country as a high jumper in 1959.

Boston set a world record of 26 feet, 111/4 inches in the long jump on August 12, 1960, breaking the mark set by Jesse Owens twenty-five years before. It was the first of five world records Boston established in the event.

Less than a month later, Boston broke Owens' twenty-four-year-old Olympic record by jumping 26 feet, 7 3/4 inches to win the gold medal at the games in Rome. It was the first time four jumpers surpassed 26 feet at a single meet.

In May of 1961, Boston broke his own record with a jump of 27 feet, 1/2 inch, becoming the first to leap more than 27 feet. He extended the record to 27-2 later that year.

Igor Ter-Ovanesyan of the Soviet Union set a new record of 27 feet, 31/2 inches in June of 1962. Boston tied that mark in August of 1964 and broke it with a jump of 27-4 3/4 in September. He set his last world record, 27 feet, 5 inches, in May of 1965.

Boston won the NCAA championship in 1960, the AAU outdoor championship from 1961 through 1966, and the AAU indoor championship in 1961. He won a silver medal at the 1964 Olympics and a bronze in 1968. He was also the AAU outdoor high hurdles champion in 1965 and he had the country's longest triple jump in 1963.

Here's the sad part Cheeseborough, TSU's Women Track Coach.

The first woman ever to win gold medals in the 4 by 100-meter and 4 by 400-meter relays. She also won a silver medal in the 400-meter dash, finishing second to teammate Valerie Brisco-Hooks. Cheeseborough had won the Olympic Trials in an American record 49.28 seconds. She won the national indoor 200-yard dash in 1979 and from 1981 through 1983. At Tennessee State, Cheeseborough was a member of national championship teams that set world indoor records of 1:08.9 in the 640-yard relay and 1:47.17 in the 880-yard sprint medley relay.

Can not recruit. Just on her name and status, she should be able to attrack some of the top high school, JC track female in the country. Nashville, has a all city track team called the Continental T-Bells, coached by another TSU Alum. A majority of them end up running for the Big 12, PAC 10 or SEC. Very few,i f any has ever ran for TSU.

Man, I know where the folks at UTK are. At home doing the same things they were doing 4 years prior, or they're 'hanging' with their folks that made it to the league. I hear being a 'groupie' pays well. It's sad to see they never took the time out to develop their minds.

LMAO @ Tru for knowing about 'Gibblets'. I take it Boo is fitting in just nicely up there.

C-LeB28,

I didn't know you were a speed merchant. That's alright right there !!

That is who got the BRAND NEW YUKON.

The reason I think that it is sad for black athletes to go to pwcs is that they might get the benefit of alumni money (new cars, houses, pocket full of money) while they are there but a high % of them just ride the bench at these schools when they could be starting at hbcus. Furthermore, they usually don't graduate and they end up with some subpar job.

However, on the other hand, if these same athletes attend an hbcu, they will significantly have a better chance and getting more playing time (maybe go to NFL or NBA) and they will probably graduate from college and be able to earn a decent living.

It just comes down to if they want their money now or later in their life!

I guss if everybody wanted their money first, players like Steve Mcnair, Walter Peyton, Jerry Rice, and Lindsey Hunter could have rode the bench at a PWC and not have become the professional athletes that they turned out to be!
