It may indeed happen, but the school(s) must have their ducks in a row first.
It's not as easy as just snapping your fingers and saying, "I want to be I-A."
Let's also not forget that the 2nd best team in BCF was soundly beaten by a terrible 3-8 squad in last year's event.
In order for a whole conference to do it, you're talking major, major $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for stadium additions, Title IX, etc. Hell, the best program in BCF doesn't have money (or won't spend it) for a field house/locker room/weight room complex, which is sorely needed, and the head coach has harped for a decade about how his facilities hurt his recruiting.
I think a lot of us are blinded by the attendances of our Classics. While these handfuls of games are by far the largest crowds in I-AA, one must consider all the other games, whose attendances leave a lot to be desired. Sure, everybody's homecoming is well-attended, but what about a mid-season game against a lower-tier opponent?
I think that's a mindset a lot of people have. They see the best things and don't consider the effect of the worst.
I've got a perfect example from kicking (imagine that...lol).
The first thing Joe Fan always asks about a kicker is "What's his longest?" Well, WTF does that have to do with anything if you don't try any long ones? Would you rather have a guy who is 10/10 with a long of 35 yards or a guy who is 1/10 with a long of 50?
Our Classics are attended well, but 5,000 in a 55,000 seat stadium for a Grambling/Jackson State game is unacceptable.
Also, because 8 or so schools won't have the $$$$$ to make this move, the few home games those that would move would have would be against your Akrons and North Texases etc. If only 5,000 Jacksonians show up for Grambling, how many are gonna come for Akron....not picking on Jackson, just using one of the most rumored I-A candidates as an example. I can hear the responses, "Well, JSU was 2-10, that's why nobody came to the games." Just what the hell do you think FAMU's record is gonna be this year? 2-9 looks pretty right to me.....
I continue to reference the lame arse ULs when somebody talks about moving up. Sure they're making a little more money, but it ain't that much when you consider how much more they have to spend to field the requisite amounts of women's scholarship programs, not to mention the steady stream of arse-whippings...many of which come at the hands of I-AAs.
I'd be opposed to SU moving up. Way to many ducks left to be lined up to even consider it.
"You didn't go to SU." No, I didn't, but I support them fully, and btw, I'd be against my alma mater moving up as well.
