Hypothetical question JSU

Just because he played in the system, doesn't mean he can coach the system.

Not to mention he played in the WAC and threw the ball over 50 times a game. Dude acting like Chang was an all time great or something.

I dnt agree with that. That's just like saying Eddie Robinson the winningest coach but he only coached in the swac. If you the winningest on any level of fcs and above think a person deserves there accomplishment . I can't take away his accolades the man does have the most passing yards in fbs, that's all that matters pertaining to his career but as for him coaching just because he played is a different story !!!!

I said Chang could be an OC.. not a HC... yet. That's coming.

Chang is not that good dude. Like I said, he wouldn't be at JSU if he was highly thought of. June Jones would have helped him get at least a position coach position at the FBS level. Because that's all he would get now if he was even successful at JSU. Nobody at the FBS level will take him as an OC coming from a FCS HBCU. You and I know it. If he was so valuable the SMU folks would have kept him. Why isn't Hawaii calling him to come back like Texas Tech went and snatched up their old QB and made him Head Coach. Surely he could have gotten a POSITION COACH job at his alma mater. Norm Chow don't want no parts of Chang I bet. LOL.

Well he put up numbers. But so did others in that type of offense. Not knocking him as a player. My comment is just because you played well or excelled in a system. Don't mean you can coach it or even know WHEN to call plays. We see that all the time. All time great college and pro players not being able to be a coach at any level. LOL. Most of the better coaches have been scrub players or just average players. A few exceptions of course. But definitely not the rule.

I will give him props for having (or had) the most passing yards in FBS history but that's on the field. All the other stuff yall are saying I agree with. He went from like a GA or something with June Jones to a OC. That rarely happens that fast. That's why I haven't scratched my coaching itch yet lol

Case Keenum came in and shattered the records. In some cases it's the system and level of competition. the Eddie Robinson comparison isn't a good one because of his results (HOF players, wins against real competition, ect).

Your being sort of stereotypical . The way you putting it, fcs wouldn't have no good coaches because fbs would scoop them up. I see the way you think so I'm finish with that conversation . I'll let u have that one !!! One thing we must realize is unless your the power 5 then a lot of the lower level fbs conference schools are looked at about the same as FCS. So yeah if SMU was apart of the power 5 I could see your argument. But again I'll let u have this one !!

Real dumb....how do you fire a coach with what one losing season. Yet, say how the coach over a 10 year period had the best regular season of any coach in the conference.

TP please explain.

There are many reasons why Comegy had to go. He belongs at Valley ... in the long run, we will be better off without him.

JR, why would Chang want to be a position coach at the FBS level when he could be an OC at JSU. If the OC gig does not work, he can always be a position coach.

Dude. Any FCS coach that's an assistant would bolt to FBS just because of the money. Ain't no stereotype. You think any FCS coach will turn down a FBS job? Don't have to be Power 5 either. Didn't ND State coach Craig Boll leave for Wyoming? Why? Because it's an FBS gig. If you are good. You get offers. You act like something's wrong with that. And just because FCS coaches who are good get scooped up, doesn't mean new ones that are don't pop up. It's a cycle. Look at Brian Kelly. D3 now at Notre Dame. Chip Kelly went from small schools to now in the NFL. Pep Hamilton used to be an assistant at Howard. He has gone to Stanford to now being the Colts OC. Coaches want to keep progressing. Yes FCS gets raided for their better coaches. It's not as much because most get groomed at the FBS level as a GA all the way to Head Coach without having to go down a division. See Urban Meyer. So if Chang was hot stuff as a GA, he would have gotten a FBS offer to stay on that level. #truth.

Because it pays more money and he can get mentored by a seasoned OC. Same reason FCS head coaches have interviewed for FBS OC or DC jobs. You think if Ole Piss and Hugh Freeze offered him a qb coach job he wouldn't take it? Y'all were the only dummies to offer him an OC job. He wasn't qualified for one. Nobody wanted Chang in that capacity because he ain't ready.

Now JR, you should know by now that not only they can get FBS coaches, but FBS conferences are constantly knocking down their doors for them to leave the SWAC and to join one of their conferences. All the other schools in the SWAC should feel privilege that they have chosen to stay in the SWAC.

It was not an insult to them or FCS. Just how it goes. The majority of coaches want to coach at the highest level of their profession. You get a few exceptions who get offers and stay at a lower level. Most of the time they just wait for that right opening. If SMU had told Chang he could stay as a position coach at 150K or more vs what he makes as OC at JSU. He would have stayed. Or even his alma mater. Norm Chow is struggling over there as head coach. Surely if he was great the Hawaii alums would be begging for him to come home. Just like Kingsbury got summoned home to Texas Tech so damn fast. He proved he knew how to coach offense under Sumlin. That dude went straight up the coaching ladder. People in his craft believe in his ability to coach.

All that shit you said still opinionated. Because honestly some people would rather become a COORDINATOR even if they have to go to a lower division rather than hold a position coach status especially if it's within a reasonable pay range. You guys are just being stereotypical. As OC you create your own offense versus help emplemnt someone else's .

What JR is describing is more realistic. Look at Ron Cooper who was Head Coach at AAMU. He went from leading them to the Swac Championship game (losing to GSU) then he left to be a DB's coach at a FBS school the became a DB's coach at LSU. Why? Waaaay more money and more opportunities.

Look at Todd Bowles. From Morehouse to Grambling to the NFL as a position coach before moving up the ladder to head coach (his tight ends coach coached at Texas Southern)

The Shannon ship has sailed. LOL. JSU should go after a defensive minded Head coach and get their identity back as a tough and nasty defense. That way he would get an OC and let them do what they need to do. JSU also needs to get back to running the ball like they did in the day. I know the schemes have changed. But you could always count on JSU have a decent running game. All this video game football is not good. I understand you got to adjust to these spread and read option kids coming in. But you can still put elements of a strong ground game with a sound defense
JR,
Spoken like a true TIGER and JACKSONIAN...LOL

Like TSU did multiple times until you stumbled into Rod Reed who will finish with a losing record this year...

True, about the stumbling, until Cole was hired. Not Reed, but TN State will have a winning season.

It's funny, each time JSU hire a new coach a majority act as he will be the savior of the program. Like the hiring of Comegy, when they fail some of the JSU faithful, become upset...:(

I like OHJ, he is fine coach. And I am sure all the SWAC appreciate him.

The only thing I fault Chang on is that he's too one dimensional. Throwing the ball 50 times a game and having only 50 rush yards (in conference against the same level of competition) isn't gonna cut it.
