Honda BOTBs

GoodFella

"The Real McCoy"
Looking forward in seeing A&T, BCC, JSU & SU perform. Who will be there in attendance, I'm in Atl right now.

*edit* Just realized I posted this in the wrong forum. Mods move this to the band board, for some reason I can't delete threads anymore.

Stop

From what I saw of JSU, I didn't like it but I have not watched the other bands. To me, Taylor is too old school with these solo features. I don't wanna hear a singer and I don't want to hear no dayum "Georgia on my mind". I clown MEAC bands for standing in place. I hate that. JSU is a band that MARCHES. If I went to see band performances, I would want to see the band perform. I think the BOOM can out-drill any band so why stand in place so much? Must be the influence of that band director from Norfolk State who used to have NSU standing in place for 80% of the show. I want to see some drills. You have ALL of those people in the band... you got 15 minutes and best thing you can do is stand in place?

Now, granted, I am still SURE the BOOM was STILL a top 3 performance (especially in the sound department) but I just PERSONALLY don't like some things. When Liddell was the director, he went for entertainment. Events like this, you want people to walk out and REMEMBER you. I think Taylor goes for "cute" and a high level of musicality. That's GREAT but there is a time and place for that.. LOL

A lot of the bands stood there and played songs. It's probably to time consuming to chart drills for that long. 15 minutes..LOL I just hate we came right out the gate with the Georgia on my mind. We had three features...Man one was enough...

Liddell just continued what Taylor had started in the late 80's (Showtime). JSU's President like what Taylor is doing, that's why she gives him almost anything he asks for! You must admit, the Boom sounded dayum good when they were standing still! The Boom had something for every generation, that was Taylor's intent.

That's the funny thing tho. Taylor was KNOWN for great shows but he does not give you that now and I personally think Meyers is the reason. Someone wanted the BOOM toned down. No twirlers, no baby tigers and if they do perform they can't hit the posts, etc... JSU did some things that kept the crowd entertained throughout even in the 80s Taylor years. What happened to that? I think the BOOM sounds good AND marches good... we just don't go for the kill entertainment-wise.

We did some new things in ATL so that was good. One thing people cant say is that it was a predicatble show. It's just that they didn't go in like I am used to seeing the BOOM do.. and that dude talked to much in the beginning. They DMs should have just came out and did their thing.. and why did they try to form that "J"? I thought they had messed up at first.

Now having said ALL of that.. compared to other bands, we are proably STILL the best.. :D

Did you ever see Taylor's bands in the 80s? Pure entertainment. I think now, it is just hard to please folks. And he probably feels he has nothing left to accomplish. I still don't like yall's drums on the sideline. Haughton never did that. That was a Taylor thing. No reason why the section can't be incorporated in EVERY drill. I always thought that was kind of lazy. But he made it work for the Boom back in the day. Maybe the section is just too big. One thing I also noticed was the 15 minutes for shows at the Honda. Since all the conferences cut down halftime performances of bands down to 10 minutes I believe. Nobody has 15 minute shows anymore. That is what we used to do in the 80s. Doc Greggs was a master of those long shows. Actually since we usually do two drills, it sets up for the Juke nicely to have that kind of time. But it does take a lot more work to get a big band to do the extra stuff for 15 minutes. I like my frat bruh Russell Gunn getting some shine on with the Boom. Good to showcase your own cat. But maybe that should have been placed in the middle of the show.

With school being out during the Christmas break and having a few weeks to get ready for Honda, I am sure it not enough time to change everything and develop a whole bunch of stuff for the Honda. The Honda date is great for the fans and such. But I don't know if it is great for the bands. I imagine some bands had kids who did not make it back for the 2nd semester or have kids who start trying to work full time during the spring after giving so much up during the fall. It is lot of time and effort that goes into all of these performances. Props to the Boom, and of course my Jukebox for putting on good shows. As a bandsman I appreciate the effort. It ain't easy these days like it used to be with how the bands were allowed to practice and do things.

Now I was shocked Taylor has gone to the 6 DMs thing. To me that ain't JSU. To me it diminishes what he takes to be DM when you have so many. Just no need. But that is just me.

Yeah.. that's why I am surprised by what he puts on the field. Granted, his shows are CLEAN and we ain't complaining about that. I think Meyers has asked him to tone things down. That is the only explanation that makes sense to me. At one time, I heard she wanted to make the J-Settes more like a flag girl troupe.. LOL (like A&T)
