Brian Jenkins turned the Bethune-Cookman University football program into a winner, but off the field former players and coaches say the program was rife with rules violations and teetering on the edge of dysfunction because of the animosity between them and Jenkins, who is the new head coach at Alabama State University.

In the past month, the Montgomery Advertiser was contacted by, or made contact with, more than a dozen former players and four former coaches from the school in Daytona Beach, Florida.

With one exception, they independently provided nearly identical details of rules violations and what they felt was Jenkins' mistreatment of players.

Allegations against Jenkins and his program include:

•Improper benefits provided to players;

•Improper housing arrangements;

•Continued and extensive violations of the NCAA weekly practice time limits;

•Failure to pay three assistant coaches that resulted in a federal lawsuit;

•And, bullying of staff and players with retaliation against those who spoke up.

But in fall camp in 2013, two weeks prior to Bethune-Cookman's first game, things finally came to a head, the players and coaches said.

After Jenkins surprised the team with a 1 a.m. practice — its third practice in 18 hours — there was a mutiny, the assistant coaches said. According to Pritchard, Alcutt and seven other players, the entire Bethune-Cookman team refused to leave the locker room for the next day's practice.

"We just had enough," former receiver Justin Henderson said. "People just don't understand how bad it was. I know it's football and everybody's supposed to be tough and all that, but man, this was a damn three-a-day we just had. That's just crazy."

Following the refusal to practice, the players said Jenkins locked the weight room and locker room and wouldn't allow anyone in for the next two days.

So major095, so you think none of the story is true by J. Moon? I got relatives who attended BCU & they told me what they heard over the past few years. I guess its all about winning at all cost for some!!

These are serious allegations .... You are right @JagHammer, we dodged a bullet in more ways than one. Robbing peter (academics ) to pay paul (athletics ) and finding out you are paying this guy to mistreat players /staff. I guess now that he's gone, they feel free to talk because they can't be retaliated against . I knew he was a hot head but having 3 a days is CHEATING and it is a serious safety risk. Smh @ practice at 1:00 a.m.

He won't last long at Bama State because they will kick his ass. Those are horrible accusations.

Josh Moon strikes again lol. He won't be happy until Bama rehires LC Cole.

About Jenkins, he played us good last year. And probably SU the year before that. With JSU he sent his resume and had his rep contact us - without formally applying. Negotiated a nice pay raise for himself. Bama state should've known something was up when he took a 90k paycut.

Jenkins sound like Joe Clark, lol... Looking the weight room..... If the AD did not disclose to the board these accusations, he and Jenkins will be gone. This is not good PR for Bama State, they already have enough problems. I guess this is why most of his assistants did not follow him to Bama State!!! Good job Bama State on your coaching hire!!!!!

Nope... Feel like it's probably all true. Though Josh Moon doesn't cover bama state or sports anymore, I knew who wrote the piece before I looked. That's what I was referring too. It just feels like Josh Moon is always the guy over there who writes these pieces. If bama state wins the college baseball world series he'll be no where to be found, but let melendez get a speeding ticket and he'll have the video.
To be fair, maybe he does that with bama and auburn too but I wouldn't know since i don't pay attention to anything alabama and only read articles about auburn that relate to jeremy johnson (carver alum).

should have hired bill clark? yall know barlow is at his house laughing his butt off. he only broke a rule to get crowell. does this mean that jenkins will have to forfeit his win over barlow in orlando? so bcu is/has self-reported major violations and is trying to sink jenkins too? just asking

Major,

I agree with you about josh moon. I remember when he used to post in this forum, always talking about how ASU wronged the crooked Cole brothers.

Having said that, the Jenkins allegations have a ring of truth about them. Seems like he was being run out of BCU.

Exactly! This guy has a personal vendetta against #myASU, and certain SWAC school gobble his schitt like it's cake. Oh well, back to boycotting the advertiser. Why support a city that clearly DOES NOT support us?!

If even half of this is true then I does sound like this guy may need to be on some type of medication to control his behavior at times! No smack intended!

bama state keeps digging themselves into a bigger PR mess. Jenkins lobbied for the Grambling job, but now, Im even more grateful we hired Fobbs.

Why is this just coming out and from what i'm hearing Bama State knew about these allegations before they hired him so they would actually put their students in harms way over a coach? That is wild. We as HBCU's must make more smart decisions because negativity like this hurts us and the media thrives on stuff like this to give people reasons not to attend HBCU's. Can't blame no one for digging this us, if its true it needs to be out in the open. Stop hiding this type of crap anyway, just to win a damn football game.

That's wild. They're singing like canary birds now. Soooo glad Jenkins toyed with us. We already got enough foolery going on at JSU.
I liked old Jenkins... didn't know he was crazy though. Hope the bamas can keep him in check.

Bama State will be looking for an AD and coach soon. It seems Bethune has self reported to the NCAA and former coaches and players are coming out about the allegations. Just the money to pay for transcripts at another school and transportation is a major infraction. If I was Bama State, I would go ahead and let him go and move on. The negative PR will be a nightmare if changes are not made.

I told you guys about Jenkins. We've seen him act crazy in the middle of a game...throwing headsets at coaches(on ESPN), cussing players out, yelling at refs(got suspended at one point), running onto the field, etc. He's an intense coach and very talented but he's a hot head.

There's stories that we've all heard about this guy, but for it to actually come out...I mean, this is wild
