That one person volunteered information and went on record.

Why didn't the TSU coach speak to the media directly (local or otherwise)?

Can't definitively answer that one, as I don't know (something I don't mind saying)....BUT!!!!

There IS an OFFICIAL statement posted on the TSU athletic website.

"At Texas Southern University we hold our student-athletes to high standards in regards to sportsmanship and personal conduct," said TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Charles McClelland

"An unfortunate incident occurred during the second half of our women's basketball game with Southern University that undoubtedly does not reflect the core values and principles that we expect our student-athletes to exhibit at all times. Both institutions along with the conference office are in the process of reviewing the incident and gathering additional information."

While it doesn't provide the answers you may think you deserve, it is a statement that was posted nearly 5 hours ago. I actually applaud the approach of NOT commenting in the immediate aftermath and allowing the official process to play out, rather than "trying this in the media", which.....well, I'll just leave that right there.

And since you got wind of this on Twitter from people in attendance, why not quote their Twitter post? Don't need permission for that.

I didn't say I deserve ANY answers. I'm just wondering why if you TSU folks are saying all the articles are inaccurate, why didn't the real story come out from TSU (directly, not via a statement by the AD)?

A lie is obviously nothing for you to tell. No cheerleaders were throwing punches. Maybe you're mistaking the cheerleaders for YOUR fans that rushed the court.

Wrong two male cheerleaders did throw punches to our girls I was looking dead at them they stop and pretended they were pulling away a southern BB girl when the police ran up on their sides...weak bastards

J4L, let me reword my reply. It wasn't directed specifically at you, despite the wording of my reply. I was speaking generally. Several people have asked that question and insinuated that what was reported must be true since there was no statement to the contrary. I counter with the fact that it appears TSU is not going to play this out in the media, as it does no good. The media has no bearing in the ultimate disposition, so all comments are being handled with athletic administration, and are going directly to the conference office.

In addition, I say that the whole locker room portion of that story is inaccurate because I was there.

I applaud coach Hayes-Perry for not running to the media with her side of the story like the liar (alledged) did. He said she said only fans a flame that needs to die and if you think the white media has our best interest at heart you need a reality check. pugh got her-story to the media as quickly as possible which should tell you something about her character.

S Phi S and I do not agree on everything but his veracity has never been a question in my mind.

Sigh.....

This.....
"While there is no official word on what started the fight, witnesses at the game told HBCU Sports that a hard foul on a Southern player prompted the scuffle. “A Southern player was fouled hard and tempers flared,” said Fred Batiste, a fan who watched the fight unfold. “Two TSU players ran off the bench and the donnybrook took place.”"

...is refuted sentences later by this.....
"It all started when TSU’s Miracle Davis took a charge underneath the TSU basket."

The latter comes from the same article that national outlets picked up (which, coincidentally, contained other erroneous information), while the former suggests that TSU committed a hard, unnecessary, foul, then had two players run off the bench for no reason to trigger the fight. In actuality, the players ran off BOTH benches in REACTION to the fight that had already started after the TSU player took the charge (which is an OFFENSIVE foul committed by SU). The former is also attributed to a random fan in attendance while the latter comes from a combination of the head coach as well as a published account from the media.

I stop short of calling journalistic credibility into question, but don't act surprised that people are up in arms about the way this article is written.

See this lie here in bold....The charge happen underneath the Southern basket we know this why, because it was the 2nd half of the game and the fight broke out on that end of the court...Nword and flies!

Because we do things decently and in order these days.

Please provide the exact details so we all know.
Please see S Phi S post.

Perhaps inaccurate is a better word.

The altercation arose out a charging file. Miracle Davis was exuberant as a result of the call. A Southern player had an issue and bumped her as she started toward the TSU end of the court.

BTW, there was a quote attributed to Coach Hayes-Perry.

"It was very undisciplined by both teams and fans on the sideline," TSU coach Johnetta Hayes-Perry said. "I thought after the charge both players were trying to get up, but another player pushed them and that is all I could see."

Better yet, that quote was also in the Advocate story, yet no mention of it on the front page.

What it does not provide is fodder for their fantasy. It is the proper and classy statement which does dot assign fault but details what we strive for at sTu unlike a coach whose name I refuse to ever mention again. When I find a proper term for _ _ _ _ I will get back to you.

It is not about it playing out in the media or someone running to the media... our coach speaks to the media after every game and answers questions. I'm sure she was asked and she answered with her version.

Kendrick, question.....

How did you find the lone fan (of the 3,024 listed in official attendance) that you attributed the quote to? If you want to ad viewpoints from those in attendance, and provide a FAIR article (I'll stay away from the word erroneous), could there not have been more people quoted? Just a question....you know, because I'm not a journalist.

Fred (Journalist on HBCU Sports) who was at the game, contacted me directly on Twitter and described what he saw.

And I used his account in the story.

The number of people or fans I could have quoted wouldn't have made the story more or less fair because there are readers who claimed that Pugh was lying about what happened and she's the coach.

The truth is somewhere in the middle here.

Ok thanks... I think Kendrick wrote his story before the advocate did.

Then his veracity and impartiality as a "journalist" is seriously in question.

Maybe, maybe not. My question, then, is this. Is the point of this article to inform the readers of the event that occurred? For those that feel that Pugh is lying, they likely would have been satisfied to even see the TSU coach's quote. As it is written, this article implies that SU was simply playing basketball when all of a sudden, a TSU player committed a hard foul, then the TSU bench and fans proceeded to jump the SU team.

Although official information has been hard to come by, I think there is enough information out there to verify that this wasn't the case. If the point is to inform, why not present more INFORMATION to allow the reader to develop their opinion with. If I hadn't been there and witnessed most of this with my own eyes, I would be forced to accept this version of events. Knowing what I know from the event, that's not fair to the readers who were not there, because they are not being presented with all available information, just the stuff you feel is relevant.

You can't control what the Advocate ran, and that's a completely separate issue. But that isn;t the only problem in your article. Nevertheless, you got it.

Remember the statement about this game being EPIC? It appears they knew something the rest of us did not.....Operation Steamroll would be in effect.

I didn't present info that I felt was relevant. I presented what was available at the time. There's a difference. Texas Southern didn't come out with a statement until this morning. Hours after the incident. Now the TSU coach gave a quote that the AP ran.

And who is to say your version of the events isn't erroneous?

The quote from the coach that was in that story was there last night. And I would definitely think that someone who was working the scorer's table dialoguing DIRECTLY with the officials, AND someone who was on the court AND in the locker room area helping to diffuse the situation would report MUCH less erroneous information than someone who quoted another media outlet and someone seated at the top of the arena on twitter. You can choose not to believe me. Makes me no difference.
