About 20 members of Jackson State University's famed marching band have been suspended pending an investigation into hazing allegations.

Jackson State spokesman Anthony Dean said the rest of the Sonic Boom of the South will perform today at JSU's football game against Grambling State. The band has about 300 members.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Dean would not give details about the allegations on Friday.

According to university policy, hazing is defined as "any action taken or situation or intimidation created, intentionally whether on or off campus, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, ridicule, or the breaking of schools' rules."

The band also faced hazing allegations in October 2007.

At that time, university leaders initially said the entire 280-member band would be barred from performing at a football game against Southern University, but the suspension was lifted two days later, and the band was allowed to play at the game.

University leaders said, in that investigation, interviews with 25 band members found that section leaders made members do push-ups or crunches if they didn't perform their parts correctly.

It starts off Minor then ends up major.
Just leave them kids alone. Just play your horn and let the BDs handle the rest. Use that extra energy towards your school work.

I don't consider push-ups or crunches hazing. Band members have become too soft! I thought marching bands evolved from military tradition. I just hope those kids who complained about doing push-ups or crunches never enlist in the military. Oh well, I guess times have changed...
 
This is soooo NOT hazing. Be smart though. In the future simply have a different upperclassmaen from the section do the crunches or push ups with them each time. That way, no one can accuse you of SHAT.

I wish I only had to do push-ups and situps when I was in the band.

I ain't trynna say nuttin or give any Ideas when I say thi s buuuut urrrrr.......Thank God for night time and low lit areas on campus after the crabs left band practice

I really doubt its the kids doing this.....

for the past couple of years, i've noticed parents coming to band practice and watching their kid from a car that was parked....

heyal, just a couple weeks ago....this crab's dad was going around taking pictures of all the upperclassman in the drum section....but realize he was no kinda photographer at all
 
folks should know nowadays parents aint having it....its a different breed of folk.....adapt...thats all I can tell you....or crumble...


folk will call it hazing if you sneeze around their child.:(...be smart folks:lecture:

My High School BD would make students do push ups in front of the parents...still does.
 



Mississippi Hazing Law

§ 97-3-105. Hazing; initiation into organization.

(1)A person is guilty of hazing in the first degree when, in the course of another person's initiation into or affiliation with any organization, he intentionally or recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to such other person or a third person and thereby causes such injury.

(2)Any person violating the provisions of subsection (1) of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not more than Two Thousand Dollars ($ 2,000.00) or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than six (6) months, or both.

(3)A person is guilty of hazing in the second degree when, in the course of another person's initiation into or affiliation with any organization, he intentionally or recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to such other person or a third person.

(4)Any person violating the provisions of subsection (3) of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not more than One Thousand Dollars ($ 1,000.00).

(5)The provisions of this section shall be in addition to other criminal laws, and actions taken pursuant to this section shall not bar prosecutions for other violations of criminal law.

That's the law, folks. It's not about being soft or weak or anything else. Back in the day, there was a lot that was ignored or winked at but no more. Folks better recognize that they can go to jail behind these "traditions." We may not like it but that's the business.

Frat, I see and understand the law, but if an individual cannot handle doing some pushups, they are soft, IMHO!
The only substantial physical "thing" that will happen is stronger arms; I don't know how any subtantial risk of
physical injury can occur by doing pushups. Even in P.E. in middle school, kids do push ups and I doubt that anyone would allow that if the risk of physical injury was present.

That's the problem, P.E. is now an elective at most schools. :shame:
 
I think they're saying that the push-ups and stuff were from the last investigation, not this one. Don't think they've said what happened this time around.
 
Man, where were the brave folks when I was undergrad? I tried so hard to get those bandheads to speak about hazing. But they were too scared.
 
Give one of these to each band member that complains when asked to do push-ups or crunches.

i bet they don't get on the athletic team captain for make his/her teammates do exercises. Band requires physical fitness as well.
