Reid apologizes for racial remarks about Obama during campaign

Washington (CNN) -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized Saturday for making racially insensitive remarks about Barack Obama during the presidential campaign.

Journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann reported the remarks in their new book "Game Change," which is scheduled to be in bookstores Tuesday.

The authors quote Reid as saying privately that Obama, as a black candidate, could be successful thanks, in part, to his "light-skinned" appearance and speaking patterns "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

"He [Reid] was wowed by Obama's oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama -- a 'light-skinned' African American 'with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,' " Halperin and Heilemann say.

"Reid was convinced, in fact, that Obama's race would help him more than hurt him in a bid for the Democratic nomination," they write.

In a statement to CNN, Reid said, "I deeply regret using such a poor choice of words."

"I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans for my improper comments.

Styles,
I understand that if a republican would have said this, it would have caught fire but honestly, I don't see a problem with what Reid said. Let's be honest, he told the truth. If Obama would have been dark skinned, he would have stood zero chance of getting elected.

I hate to say it, but yall know he was telling the truth on this one. Had he looked like Kunta with nappy hair, big and maseculine he wouldn't have had a chance. White folks are intimidated by what they consider a true black man.

You two are out of your minds. Reid pretty much called blacks a bunch of idiots. What the hell is no Negro Dialect???

Styles,
You know exactly what Reid is talking about. He may not have worded it best but you know exactly what he means. A dark skinned person stands no chance in America of being president. Hell, most light skinned blacks look down on their darker counterparts...

But Pops, that's not all what he said. Why are you totally ignoring the other statement?

Although it may be truth, I don't like how fast black Democrats are running to defend Harry Reid.

Micheal Steele recently stated if a white Republican said the same thing, black Democrats would have asked him to step down. I agree with Steele on this one. I see this as being no different from the Trent Lott gaff.

You know what is so ironic about this? Check out this quote I found from Harry Reid: "He had no alternative. If you tell ethnic jokes in the backroom, it's that much easier to say ethnic things publicly. I've always practiced how I play."

This is about Trent Lott's remark at the Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party.

Can you say double standard?

Personally,
I was not upset with Trent Lott over his gaffe. I believe it was mere slip up that was blown out of proportion. Trent Lott did more for young black democrats in the state of Mississippi than a lot of these so-called democrats we have in office now. He got money for our HBCU's in the state and Trent made sure that Mississippi got a decent share of money from the feds every year. We have struggled ever since he stepped down.

Now, I didnt agree with Trent on much and he is no civil rights beacon but he took care of the state. He gave a speech on the coast a few months back and spoke favorably of Obama to the suprise of many... Trent just had to get out of office before he got drug down the mud hole with Dickie Scruggs..

The point I'm making is it doesn't matter how much good Lott does for blacks. He will always be viewed as a racist due to him being a republican.

Reid didn't say anything you didn't hear on EVERY black radio station during the 2008 election cycle. Shoot folks on this board have said worst.

You are reaching here. No one in their right mind would believe all Republican's are racist. Republican's get the short end of the race stick because they are often voting against issues that seem to be helpful of people of color. Add on top of that the extremist in the GOP like the Tea Party people who openly call the President every race name in the book, the fact that their are no elected high ranking person of color in the GOP, and the issue with Republican 'Southern Strategy'. It's all alot to take in, the sad but true fact is the GOP hasn't done an effective job of handling people's perception of them on race.

Racism crosses over party lines their are a gang of Dem's and Rep's that are racist I just don't think Reid is one of them.

Kind of hypocritical of the DEM's.
Dems are turning this kind of crap into a habit of setting fire to REPUBS but kiss the butt of their own when they do the same.

Sincerely
Trent Lott.

JUST SAYIN'.......................:noidea:

Here is an interesting take on this issue:

Lost in all the handwringing and shock, however, is any clear explanation of what's wrong with Reid's comment. Clearly, using "Negro dialect" is about half-a-century behind the times, but does anyone think Reid meant ill by his anachronism? Moreover, as the recent kerfuffle about the 2010 Census revealed, "Negro" is still used by a non-trivial number of older black folks. In 2000, for example, more than 50,000 people went the extra effort of writing-in that they identified themselves as "Negro" (over-and-above the millions who checked the box for "Black, African-Am., or Negro").

He apologized for it and it's nothing I KNOW a lot of BLACKS said themselves....

We all know if Barack had a "hint" of yall uncle "Frank" in him he would not have been President...

He apologizing, but that fool still feel the same way....

Personally I say the black Dems shouldn't defend him. We don't need to stick our nose there. But I know good and well I said the same thing first time I heard Obama speak once he was in the running. And everytime he would fool around and say something like "sup" I'd find myself saying man watch it with that. If anything I think what screws Reid is the "negro dialect" terminology. He could have said it a different way.

The Washington DEMO's are looking really stupid right now defending this guy after all the people they have went after and forced to resign on the other side. :smh:

Somehow they always manage to shoot themselves in both feet when thing's should be sailing along calm and smooth.:smh:
This bunch in the Congress and Senate is beginning to look more "Do as I say and not as I do" than the REPUB's right now.

All of this is serving it's purpose..... It's done to keep the American people confused.. and that most of you are... lol

Man yall need to be honest with yourself. We do have a different language. Heck it's funny, we all holla I speak perfect English, but when you ninjas get mad, oh boy yall shole can speak that ebonics then.

Basically....

If we still have to "TALK/WALK/ACT" like them to "BE" around them then we still ain't free....

That's not the point.

If a repub had said what this guy said, how many of these forgiving black lawmakers and posters here for what it's worth, would be acting like it's a big misunderstood joke.
If a Repub had been uncovered saying this and admitted it, fire and brimestone would be comming out my computer screen from all the mad as hell people discussing it.
