Dude, your coach lost that game. Plain and simple. You say players have to execute, but your coach shouldn't put the players in a position to lose the game. That's what Spears did.

....

This is so true.

Someone may have already mentioned this. But what should also make Grambling fans mad is that Hampton was also running a new offense. When they had to make plays, they did, like at the end of regulation and in overtime. As it has been basically said it is good for Hampton that Spears and the coaching staff gave them some opportunities to make those plays.

Frankly, I think that Spears will make more decisions like he did yesterday. Sometimes coaches and players need to put their ego in check and just get a win anyway they can. But Spears ego will only allow him to crush his opponent by winning big or winning by the big play. In other words you are who you are-especially in sports.

Spears has a huge ego, and his huge ego will cause him to make similar calls later in the season-especially when he does not have to make those calls.

And yes, there are a few village idiots on the sidelines. Your coach just had the luxury of having better athletes. You get what you got yesterday when he has to actually coach.
Grambling was in position to put the game away. If you want to point the finger, there are a whole lot of things yhat you can point at. Regardless of what happened yesterday, I know one thing, Grambling will beat Jackson State. If you want to go on first game outings, PQ is no where close to Grambling, with the misfires we had on yesterday. PQ shouldn't even score on a hyped up Div.I-A loaded J-State team. We can play better than PQ on our worst damn day, which was probably yesterday.

And Gramblinites have to realize this very soon. The Brand Name "Grambling State University" is the reason we are loaded with talent". Spears does a very good job selling that name. What if we had someone that knew what to do with all that talent is only imaginable.

Things that could be done immediately due to Spears being lock into a contract and no HBCU can really afford to buy a coach out. Go out and HIRE true Defensive and Offensive Coordinators that can GAME PLAN.

If we win the SWAC and the BC, all this mess won't even be heard. A lot of you will have amnesia and Spears will be the greatest coach in the world. Ni**as and flies!!! :shame:

Why is winning the SWAC and BC all we should care about. I would like to win outside the SWAC sometimes you know. Even the Dallas Cowboys stated it was hard to evaluate Jason Hatcher due to who we are playing (i.e. Nine Game Mandate). Do you realize what is about to happen in Houston and that the Alabama A&M game is a must win or we start the season 0-3. When we play teams like Houston we are not going to have the same dumb azz sideline across from us as we have on our very own sideline.

Lol @ spears. Announcers had JUST said there isn't a coach in the country that wouldn't call a run here.

Steve Wilson and our OC from last season would've made that call.

I don't know. I'm not in favor of the SCG or the BC being played the week I-AA playoffs start. I said that to make my point. Don't know how you got that I cared about winning the SCG and BC out of the statement.... A lot of people on here don't want to alter it for monetary reasons though..... We have beat that dead dog on here time and time again too. Also, I think that we will enter the BC with a 7-2 record.......

That was a sin and a shame.    :saw: :saw:

TERRIBLE PLAYCALLING!!!!!!

I cannot believe some foks are atually trying to defend that shat!!!!

Spears made the dumbest playcall of the year. How in the hell do u call a pass play there? Smh

Let me get inside the head of Melvin Spears. I don't agree with the decision, I would have ran the ball and taken my chances punting the ball.

BUT...

Spears is not conventional... He's pass oriented and very CONVINCED that he can control a game with this pass offense. He was looking to pickup the first down and then run out the clock on the ground. Even willing to bet that he had explained to Landers to make sure he didn't turn it over with an interception. Hell, it was worser (thanks MH) than an interception. But I really doubt if Spears even IMAGINED that Landers would be sacked and NOT complete the pass. Spears is one "Convinced" dude... so much that some folk take issue with that part of his personality.

I can understand his reluctance to punt (Hell, Hampton was swarming and had almost blocked one earlier if Manuel hadn't pulled one down and avoided a block). But I wouldn't have passed either... Spears either has a smaller brain or bigger balls than most.

G-Man75....it was an issue of common sense:

1st and 10; 4th Quarter; 9:41 left in the game. Ball on the 4 yard line after the fumble recovery.

Why would your first play be a pass when you have proven that your squad can run the Wing-T successfully; your running back (whether he was performing well that day or not) should have been given a chance; the Offensive Line should have been slapped upside the head to grasp their attention; and Spears should have said one thing. UP THE MIDDLE.

I love Grambling State University, Grambling High School, Grambling Middle Magnet School, and Alma J. Brown. Yet, I am not going to sit back and be a fool and state that whomever made the decision to pass; and those supposedly qualified followed suit; and Landers as a field commander didn't say, "Coach that's not the right deicison. Fugg that coach I'm calling a time out because this is SERIOUS."

At the present time all of you who are defending Grambling and utilizing excuses can kiss my ARSE. After Landers' brother was killed; the team should have practiced as if Landers was questionable for Saturday, POINT BLANK.

Dayum DSN, You okay???

Havign big balls and small brains is what will continue to seperate US from THEM. Keep the balls and EGO and I'll take the win anyday.

Foolishness I tell ya.

Big Balls got you a loss and you were up 13. I could see if you trailed the whoel game or somethin but you had the lead and chose otherwise.

JUST PLAIN SAD.......

No finger pointing......Take responsibility. The better team did not win saturday at all. That is a dayum lie.

Spears was outcoached and outcoached himself in the process.

Next game.

STC, u a real azz ninja. It takes a man to admit his mistakes. The better team did not win. The coach that made the less dumb decisions won the game. Proper coaching, Grambling would never lose a game in BCF. The talent that Grambing is able to attarct just because it is Grambling is unbelivable. We just need a HEAD, we got a damn good body.

Spears will be alright. I think he will change some things to better suit landers talent. I wish he would get kerlegan ready to play.

We will be alright.

Bad Coaching game.

Kids played they ass off. U have to put your kids in the right situation to make plays. What good is it to have all these playmakers if they are not put in position to make plays for you.

I continue to say this forever, "TALENT WILL ONLY TAKE YOU SO FAR"

You as coach will have to coach one day against a team that has the same talent or better talent than you. THEN WHAT????

John Smith send help please.

Grambling QB is 'inspiration'

BY MARTY O'BRIEN

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA -- Grambling State quarterback Brandon Landers' emotional ride of the past week came to a bittersweet end in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge on Saturday. Landers played against Hampton University in the game just eight days after witnessing the shooting death of his brother, Frank Landers.

He was brilliant at times, completing 21 of 41 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns to earn MVP honors for the Tigers. But Hampton defensive end Alden Blizzard forced a Landers fumble late in regulation.

The Pirates capitalized by scoring a touchdown to tie the game, then won 27-26 in overtime. Landers, a 6-foot sophomore, was gracious afterward.

"It was a hard-fought game and the best team won," he said. "I just went on with my everyday life this week. I stayed close to my teammates and coaches and the people at Grambling.

"Coach (Melvin Spears) keeps telling me that God doesn't make mistakes and that everything happens for a reason. I'm just going to look at this as motivation and go on with my life."

Hampton coach Joe Taylor called Landers' performance inspirational.

"To lose a brother a week ago and come out and lead his team the way he did, leaves me with nothing but praise for him," Taylor said. "I told him that he's an inspiration for a lot of young people. Because of him his team was always in the game."

TAILBACK DEPTH

Hampton tailback Alonzo Coleman entered the game 242 yards shy of Montrell Coley's school rushing record of 3,838 yards, and needing two touchdowns to tie Coley's school record 52 TDs. Coleman ran for 72 yards in the first half but did not score; he then sat out the second half because of sore ribs and dehydration.

Reserves Van Morgan and Kevin Beverly played well in Coleman's absence. Morgan ran for 82 yards on 14 carries. Beverly carried eight times for 37 yards and made a 10-yard touchdown reception in overtime.

"I can't say enough about what Van Morgan did," Taylor said. "Kevin Beverly ran hard and was elusive."

FEARLESS PROGNOSTICATOR

Moments after Grambling State scored a touchdown in overtime to cut Hampton's lead to 27-26, Taylor told offensive coordinator Chris Beatty not to bother to look for any more plays.

"I said we wouldn't need them because I knew we were going to block the extra point," Taylor said. "We must have 15 kick blocks in the four years that (assistant coach) Tim Edwards has coached that team."

The Pirates had three on Saturday, including the one that Taylor predicted: Derius Swinton's extra point block that ended overtime and assured the Pirates' victory.

Taylor also praised Antwan Smith for his special teams play. Smith replaced Jahmal Blanchard as kick holder and deftly handled high snaps on two of Andrew Paterini's place kicks, including the point after in OT.

THIS AND THAT

Marquay McDaniel was voted Hampton's MVP in the game. He made six receptions for 113 yards and a TD, and returned two punts for a total of 48 yards. ... The Pirates lead Grambling 6-2 in the all-time series. ... The Pirates host Howard on Saturday at 6 p.m. ?

Champions don't piss away chances to win ballgames just to score a "few" more points.

that mentality will get him beat again, trust me.

Probably will but that's how the man rolls. He's not different in that regard than someone like Steve Spurrier. I'm willing to bet that Spurrier would have thrown for it too (remember it was 3rd and 7).
