Its great to see those schools mentioned in the Top 25 with programs like App. St, GA Southern, and Furman just to name a few..Will this ever become a reality?

It's possible if we can commit to our programs on the level of the mid-tier schools.

Youngstown State should have moved up during their heydey, they could have taken a MAC spot before Buffalo joined the league. I would love to see some of the eastern schools move up all at once and make their own league. Take the better teams from the Southern and Colonial, and make a 10 team league to start off in FBS.

Could Gram survive in FBS with 5,000 students?

Enrollment is on the rise. Only dropped due to the transition from open to selective admissions. Grambling was once 8,000 strong and it definitely can get back there and even surpass it. I'm sure the vote isn't for something that will happen in a year or two, if done right i think we could do it. Just got to build the fan base like it should be. That will come with increased enrollment and with our coaching staff i'm sure we will continue to have a successful football program hence the reason why we were voted for.

I think we missed our chance to move up the late 80s to mid 90s the SWAC had the teams to do it...it will be hard now.

Army, Wake Forest and Rice has similar enrollments... you are right. It's the alums that matter.

Wake Forest and Rice are private schools with private $$$$ to support them, and Army is a military institute so the $$$$ and recruits won't ever be a problem. Also, how many championships in the past 10 years have those 3 teams won? I know Wake Forest had their moments, I believe Rice was a 1 or 2 year wonder, and Army is getting back to being respectable.

Air Force has 4600 its the alumni base not the student population.

Air Force is the GOVERNMENT. LOL. They get money. Same for the Naval Academy and West Point. Plus all three schools have super rich and powerful alums.

All those schools have enough wealthy alums and donors to keep it going strong. I wouldn't even talk about the service academies. If you only knew how much money and power their alums have in this country. Just think of this way. Since I am affiliated with the Naval Academy, lets just use them for example. Their alums consist of folks like President Carter, Ross Perot, John McCain, Roger Staubach, David Robinson, and a bunch of other millionaires. John J Mullen who died a few years ago was a big time supporter. He owned the NJ Devils NHL team and Houston Astros at one time. I am sure his estate continues to drop money on them. They call their rich alums the Academy Mafia. Them fools got pissed with the government owning the football stadium and not funding enough for the upkeep so the Alumni bought that mofo and run it debt free. We can't compare ourselves to those small schools with alums with rich and deep pockets. Their enrollments don't help them anyway at those Academies. Every kid there is on a FULL RIDE. No one is paying. They actually all get a monthly check. I wonder if that is against NCAA rules. LOL.

I am so glad you posted that. I didn't wanna break his poor heart. These folks don't get it man. Capital is not in our favor. We can't even get HBCU alumni to do matching programs with their jobs. Folks really think it is easy being a AD at HBCU's. Sad!!

I know there are small FBS schools but I mean with our fanbases and alumni. Could we sustain a FBS program with less than 10,000 students. A lot of our money would have to come from student fees. I think at maybe 15k, we could sneak in and take them arse whippings for a few years while collecting checks.

Our GUNAA (Alumni Association President) made a remarkable statement a few weeks ago. He stated, "If Grambling gets $2 million we need to find out how every SWAC school can get at least $1 million...and vice versa."

That's the key is we have to work together.

Only if our alums open up those pocketbooks. All of those small FBS schools are either private schools or military academies. You aren't going into the FBS with a $6 million athletic budget and think you are going to make any type of noise.

I agree. I wouldn't mind sneaking in and taking some azz whippings though

Somebody is just wasting time money and ink writing this article. Its obvious they have never been to Grambling. If anything Grambling needs to go d2. Didn't Grambling just have a fight with its coach over 50k bucks? Have you ever seen Robinson Stadium? Ever seen the campus? There are certainly a few items Grambling needs to take care if before the hypothetical move even comes up. Even a dreamy type scenario should be based on some reality
