Grambling football searching to replace Bacone College after school announces closure

Dont give me that macho "gram is special" fan bullshit. A&T beat yall en route to the first undefeated HBCU football season since God knows when, and Jacksonville State agreed to schedule them WEEK ONE. We ain't talking about 10+ years ago, and we aint talking about SU & Pete Richardson.

Richmond won 10 games in 2016 and went to the FCS quarterfinals. Sam Houston State opened 2017 against Richmond, but Im supposed to believe that SHSU, JMU, SDSU, NDSU are all scared of Grambling?

Come on man...
Sam Houston went on the road to play PV

McNeese played at Alcorn and are playing SU in 2019

James Madison is playing Norfolk this season

Jacksonville State is playing North Carolina A&T (The defending HBCU National Champions)

But they are only scared of Grambling? lol

When A&M gets to GSU’s level in football then you can speak.

The Top 10 FCS programs with schedule Alabama A&M because it is an automatic win.

You know this.

Alabama A&M has nothing to do with your original claim. Stay on task and backup your claim like a MAN and leave the empty emotions up to the women

"But muh Gramlin is the ICON!"

Jacksonville st really wants to be in the celebration bowl cause they like the spotlight lol

they probably called Grambling first and got hung up on lol

I said GSU

See again y’all not reading...

I didn’t say SWAC, MEAC, etc.... Also, again go and talk to some of the ADs or coaches that were around when SU was powerful when Coach Richardson was there and they would tell you the same thing.

This dude trollin lol.

Only feminist utilize the term "like a man"....

The claims are true...Alabama A&M is not Top football program PERIOD. So yes, Top 10 FCS programs will jump at scheduling a school on your level.

When I speak of Top SWAC Programs I speak of Southern during the Pete Richardson era....and GSU now. Whether you want to admit it or not GSU is the top program in the SWAC and has been consistently getting better since Fobbs has been here.

Those Top 10 Programs are not going to seek out a Top program that is not playoff bound because the loss would be too significant to their playoff hopes.

I do not understand why that is not getting through to some of you.

You see GSU can play the top 2 teams in FCS and lose...it means nothing. It does not affect anything. Yet, let those top 2 teams lose and it forces those teams in to a position to have to damn near win out.

As far as playing NC A&T....they are the top HBCU program...those Top 10 schools are basically running away.

Those Top 10 programs are like school bullies....they will pick on the small man...but keep their distance from the upper classmen who don't play that shit. Alabama A&M is a small man.

So basically D2 schools are scheduling the FCS big dawgs right out the gate?!

Dang, cuz! Even A&T said they aint scared of Jacksonville State!

I feel you.

I have long believed that GSU should ALWAYS schedule a Top 10 FCS Program YEARLY!!!!!

I agree. If you are Grambling, they should be scheduling a top 10 FCS team yearly. No excuse, the name is big enough to get those games yearly.

Please read...that is because the MEAC historically has been stronger than the SWAC overall (some don't want to admit it)....now wait a few years and watch what happens.

See the MEAc can leave the Celebration Bowl and go back to the playoffs. Meaning in the "white folks" eyes the MEAC is stronger. The SWAC ends the Celebration Bowl and we are back to a situation of taking or ball and playing with it ourselves.

I'm not a fan of the playoffs but it is what it is.

Those Top FCS Prograns keep their respective distance from the Top SWAC school. Like I said check with some of those folks who were around SU during those Pete Richardson days...those Top FCS programs were scared as fuck.

Also, Broadway is gone so let's see if NC A&T can be consistent.

I have been saying it for years BUT those Top 10 FCS programs don't want to risk losing to GSU and losing the FCS rankings for their playoff bids.

That's the point that people are missing.

ESPECIALLY if there was a home and home setup.

At the end of the day there is only one hbcu program in college football today that could only stand toe to toe with some of the top 10 programs in FCS other than that nobody else can compare. If you play the schedule that these players play every year then you will be able to compete at a high level. HBCU don’t get the same recruits as the other programs cause of the national exposure that those programs get. If you look at it Carson Wentz at North Dakota State we wouldn’t come close to getting a player that caliber. So it sounds good but NC A&T will be dominate because they get top players.

HBCU Football is at it lowest cause all they do is play within the circle

Wentz is from Bismark, N.D., and had ZERO FBS offers. Ain't nobody in FBS looking for QBs from North Dakota. Plus ND State is a big fish its state. No HBCU is "the big state school" in its respective state. ND State, which has the budget comparable to a lower-tiered Group of Five FBS program, also benefitted from donors getting enriched by the oil boom, along with a bunch of then-FCS powers moving up to FBS (SW Texas State/Texas State, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, etc.). Also, competition for talent up there isn't as hot as it is where our schools are located.

Hell, Southern's Danny Johnson was a two-star prospect when he came to Southern. SWAC and MEAC schools have had higher-rated players come than Wentz did at ND State. Think about it, Steve McNair was the last FCS quarterback taken nearly as high as Wentz, and that's a generation ago.

Now, I do believe the 9-game conference schedule and the SCG were part of an isolationist policy that hurt our schools in the long run when it comes to competing on the field and for talent against other FCS conferences. It lowered the bar of expectations for coaches, ADs and fan bases.

NC A&T had a TOP HEAD COACH!!!!!!

That made the difference.

NC A&T was a dormant program before Broadway got there....

2010 1-10
2009 4-6
2008 3-9
2007 0-11
2006 0-11
2005 3-8
2004 3-8

Broadway Years
2011 5-6
2012 7-4
2013 7-4
2014 9-3
2015 10-2
2016 9-3
2017 12-0

Now let's be real....A&T had a damn good coach. The question is will they be able to continue their winning ways now.

I am in agreement but the sad part is if our schools would be going to playoffs it would not be fiscally sound. Money over anything else.

unfortunately, his success hurt our schools to get the next one as the bigger schools started offering guys like him at QB as they had to hear the story week after week as to why he went to Alcorn. Similar to Southern's baseball success with black talent and Ricky Weeks as now you can't get folk like him anymore.

Also bad decisions by our leadership ... example being Southern cutting baseball scholarships after Rickie got drafted.

We don’t do a great job of striking while the iron is hot.

Broadway was a good coach he coached at Power 5 schools and had a vision at HBCU’s which made him successful. A&T was a laughing stock before he got there but same thing could be said for all these schools at one point each school had its run. And my reference to Wentz is that he was developed and not a transfer from a FBS or Juco. Now a days we wanna use transfers for everything which I get it but why can’t we go sit in the homes of kids and walk away with their commitments? Because we don’t have the top facilities or the national exposure. We throw around “ this school just won the Black College Championship” but really what is it does it give you notoriety out side of the hbcu ranks? Can you go to a place and sell your brand nationally without them saying “HBCU’s have really good bands” I mean you play all league games and no playoff exposure isn’t by default it’s to hide our old school coaching from the rest of society and modern civilization. I’m glad Hampton realized what Tennessee State realizes a long time ago and that is if we wanna be a brand we have to create our own brand outside the brand. They the only HBCU with indoor facility and compete on a high level in recruiting and against its competition and not. Valley and Delaware States every week.

That had some impact but the days of SU two and three deep was going away as Cador was offering draft picks out of state waivers and they would come with no hesitation and even sit a year until others found out.

Other teams didn’t award full scholarships during that time also. They just became more competitive and shut down pipelines that other teams used to allow them to use.

PV wasn’t trying pre Robertson and TSU was cool with allowing SU to recruit top Houston kids as long as they were better than PV and UAPB plus they always attracted out of staters from areas no one really recruited at and they had the Hispanic pipeline in Houston to themselves. Grambling was good but never great.

You make a lot of good points. But we need to realize that most of our HBCU's do not have to funding to compete on the national level. Trying to run D-1 programs on D-3 funding, but most of us think, just slap the label on it and we can compete. You need someone with vision and most of the SWAC and HBCU's are lacking funding and vision. Also, where I live, most of kids are being coached by white coaches at white high schools and they are sending those kids to PWC's, with an HBCU is being an after thought. I mentioned an HBCU and the kid laughed and said, I am not going to that inferior school. Also, our coaches are doing a bad job of recruiting. I do agree that we need to promote the teams over the bands and that would help us. The bands are nice, but lets build our teams first.
