Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

Which means JSU's athletic budget would increase by $5-8 million........IMO. This would also give JSU the funds it needs to move up to FBS, and possibly join the Sun Belt.

One reason that it WON"T happen is because Alcorn is a land-grant institution!

Re: Well Mississippians...

This ain nothin but some good ole boy crap!! They trying to propose the same thing for Savannah State, Fort Valley, and Albany State!

......and I'm sure it will stay that way, just under a different name.

I don't think you can merge a land grant institution because of how it was created thru the Morrill Acts, the Hatch Act and the Smith-Lever Act. In Mississippi there are 2 Land Grant Schools being Alcorn and Mississippi State.

Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

Well 2012 will soon be here and ITS OVA FOR EVERYBODY!
Wake up people, left from the days of NOAH!!

Where is it written that land grant institutions can't be merged?

Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

IMO, Mason and Barbour cut a deal to make JSU the largest HBCU in the nation. Not only would this increase funding for JSU, but this will also add additional programs for students to select from. I would be lying if I stated I'm against such a move.

The only thing I'll miss is the rivalry.....

Would you be for this move if you'd gone to Valley or Alcorn instead of JSU? Or would you be for it if Alcorn or Valley were bigger than JSU and JSU merged to them with the non-JSU name?

I'm ont totally against it, but not for it either. There has to be a complete understanding of the actual "merging" of these schools.

Right now, Delta State seems to be flying under the radar. If there are any merging ideas, Delta State should be included.. But this would create the largest University in the State of Mississippi... the state powers that be won't have that.

Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

This is just a proposal. Land grant issues aside, the Governor doesn't have the authority to make this happen without the legislature. And they aren't going to sign on to this plan. No way, no how. The fact that George Flaggs signed on to this make no difference.

Barbour said Jackson State would benefit from his consolidation proposal, but JSU President Ronald Mason is opposed.
"The governor's proposed budget cuts will change the face of higher education in Mississippi for decades," Mason said. "While the full meaning of the proposal concerning the historically black universities is unclear, what is clear is that Mississippi needs historically black colleges because they are dedicated to serving the needs of the state's most underserved," he said in a statement.

Mason isn't stupid.

Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

A lot of prominant HBCU alums like John A Peoples supported Barbour. We need a seat at every table they said. Well I wonder if they had a seat at the table when this proposal was cooked up. At some point we're going to learn to leave these Republicans alone.

Or would he be for this move if a Barbour were a Democrat?

Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

Sorry but I don't see how JSU would receive increased funding under this plan when the goal is to cut back. If theres any increase it would just be enough to handle the additional students which would mean barely any decrease at all. Its the same number of students and you'll need the same amount of facilities. The only thing lost will be administrative positions. Its no different then when they went on and one about merging the high schools in my home town. They talked about all these savings until they did it and then "magically" they still needed the same number of teachers, admins and buildings. All that changed was the name.

You're crazier than a fish with titties if you believe that would be the outcome.

Re: Well Mississippians...

Again.
Ain't nothing gonna happen.

Every year when the budget comes out, some idea that call's for the merger of the hbcu's here come with it.

Huh? Please tell me you really don't believe this, LOL!! Regardless of any merger, there will be the same amount of positions on these athletic teams. It's not like they will have the same amount of players as 3 teams. They'll still have the same amount of coaches and the same amount of players. It'll just mean that there's more competition for those spots.

Re: Gov. Barbour: Merge Mississippi universities

This crap ain't going nowhere.
If all these universities were merged, including MUW with Mississippi State, haley Barbour has already admitted it will only lead to $35 million in savings.
That ain't shat.
This part of the budget proposal is DOA because they don't have the votes on none of this.
The Black Caucus alone has enough votes to kill this.

This crap comes up every year.
They will have a better chance at merging the school districts and that shat ain't even gonna happen.

How about taking a look at those acts referenced by Fiyah? It is likely stated in those acts about what can and can't occur regarding a land grant institution.

Here's a starting point for your research: The Library of Congress

High School districts need to be merged.. We dont need 152....way too many superintendents and such on the payroll.
