[h=1]Mario Williams sues to get back $785,000 engagement ring[/h]
Mario Williams signed a $100 million contract last offseason to join the Buffalo Bills. But even before his huge payday, money was no object when it came to buying an engagement ring for his then-fiancée.Specifically, Williams paid $785,000 for the 10-carat behemoth. For some perspective, the median home price in Buffalo is $94,000 -- more than eight times less than the price of the ring.
But not even nearly $800,000 worth of diamonds can ensure marital bliss: Williams and Erin Marzouki broke up this January and, understandably, Williams would like the ring back. And he's willing to sue to get it.
“(Marzouki) never intended to marry (Williams) and used the relationship as a means to get to (Williams') money and acquire gifts,â€￾ read the lawsuit, filed by Houston attorneys Monica Schulz Orlando and Michael Gary Orlando (via the Houston Chronicle).

Hey...........I don't blame him.
He must think he got a good shot at getting it. Must be a F-up on her part cause you know the courts wont give it back to him if he F-uped.

After he dropped almost a million...she quit him. He says she had no plans to marry him...was just golddigging...no shit Sherlock! :xeye:

First thing, I'm pretty sure the ring cost way too much money. Some jewelry company is smiling all the way to the bank. I'm sure she would never get a quarter million dollars for that ring if she sold it back. He was a damn fool to invest into something that not worth it. He would did a lot better if he could have brought 6 to 7 homes in Buffalo as rental property. At least he would have gotten some of his money back if not all plus some.

from a quick Google...a 10 carat ring with good clarity, that's the correct price range and more. And for the oh jaded ones...I think his investment was into his relationship...she meant a LOT to him...and he gave her a LOT. Nobody is gonna buy houses when they can get love...bet that.

Love does not exist. One party is always out for more gain then the other. There is no such thing as equal in a relationship.

that's not what those folks who swear they practice UNCONDITIONAL LOVE say...I've never seen unconditional love myself...but I've never seen a unicorn either. I hope to one day...

Can one Google the return value of a used 10 karat ring? Maybe one should check the local pawn shop. I've never heard anyone getting full value of a diamond ring that they purchased from a store, unless the ring was insured and it was destroyed, damaged, or stolen per the policy. I guess one has never attempted to upgrade a diamond ring before.

On the bright side, at least she left before they got married. He'd be out 10 times more $$$ than this.

I'll agree to that. If she was a true gold digger, she would have hung in there long enough to get some of his income.

You haven't seen it because it does not exist. Reality is a mofo. Nothing wrong with love, but realizing what "Love" really is will save folks a bunch of headaches, heart aches and stupid mistakes.

The diamond is still worth every penny. You can't take something like that to pawn shop. You take it to a diamond dealer or sell it directly to another buyer. The ring itself may or may not be worth as much, depending on the metal used.

Do you honestly think a jeweler will give him $785,000 for a second hand diamond?

He should get about half of what he paid for it. Around $400,000.

If that's the case, he just lost $385,000 on it. Rings are like cars, they depreciates the minute you buy them. At least cars have some useful value, rings only have a sentimental/emotional value. No one's emotions are worth $785,000.

Mario Williams says: NOT TRUE

Nice diamond calculator for WHOLESALE diamonds. Is there one for used or secondhand diamonds?

if that's wholesale, then retail is higher...but don't know about another diamond calculator...I'll let you google it. I've done my part to add to the discussion...

There is really no such thing as a used diamond.

What a jeweler is going to do is buy this diamond from him at the wholesale price, take it out of the setting, polish it up, place it a new setting and sell that same diamond to the next sucker for $785,000. The next person who buys that diamond will not be told it had been purchased and worn before.

The markup from wholesale to retail of diamond rings is usually 100% (or more).

But, you're right, nobody who is knowledgeable about the jewelry business is going to give him the retail price of the ring. The best he can hope for is the wholesale price of the diamond.

The worst thing about this is he could have bought that diamond at wholesale price himself. Bought a setting for around a $1000 and had the diamond placed in that setting by a jeweler. He could have gotten the same ring for a little more than $400,000.

Going into a store and buying a diamond ring is one of the worst ripoffs out there. We just don't know and many men get taken advantage of every year. I was one of them. It'll never happen again though. :shame:
