Frustration Forced Williams From Grambling

I think Doug did a good job of not "Dogging" his school out with his explanation. He could have seriously trashed the facilities and administration. In the articles I didn't see where he said how bad the facilities were, just they needed maintaince and upgrading. He didn't say his kids didn't have a place to workout, just wanted what the other schools have. Nowhere did I see him question the academic support given his kids or say the dorms weren't livable. He just said they didn't respond to his request in an approprate amount of time.

You all know he could have said a lot more worst things about GSU.

He did not have to say anything. The people who needed to know, knew. It may have been after the fact but they knew before all of this happened.....also, Doug has to accept some blame about this as well. Seems that Dr. Clausen asked him about the problem before he heard from Tampa and he said everything was fine. He is okay with ratting out Dennis now but not then. Interesting!!!

The hell with Doug Williams. No the facilities aren't great, but at what HBCU D1-AA are they great. Grambling probably has better facilities than 85% of the other SWAC schools. Hell some school don't even have a stadium, he mad because he can't get two practice fields. Some schools don't a weight room, he mad because he don't want to share the G weight room with others. In the hood you learn to deal with what have and build to get what you want. To me this is like having a problem with your wife and not speaking to her about it, but going two blocks away and telling someone outside your house the problems you have with your wife. Is anyone at GSU speaking out about Doug short falls, hell no. Doug should just take his self centered azz to Tampa and be happy. He acts as if he is second guessing his decision and trying to find comfort blaming someone else. Grambling was Grabling before Doug and will be Grambling after his as leave Tampa again. Charles P. Adams and the Legendary Coach Eddie Robinson built Grambling not Doug Williams.

Williams' memorandum requests several things: an additional full-time coach at a salary ranging from $30,000-$35,000; a part-time coach and/or two graduate assistants; money to maintain the football field, practice field, support facilities and football operations (supplies for medical, office, banquet and letterman awards); and another weight room for non-football athletes.

"I am of the opinion that the additional resources to cover these fund requests can be obtained from unused scholarship funds and 20 percent of all proceeds from all football classic," Williams wrote in the memorandum. ...

It thinks thats really self explanatory. He didnt have to do that to Grambling.....very unecessary. Why? What did he hope to accomplish?

I keep telling you it's more to this than meets the eye and I'm not trying to thrown sly smack just fact's.

Question: If they wanted him to stay so much why didn't you see any effort from the alumni or the AD? I mean real effort. Hmmmm?

True!

Maybe in some weird way he really thought it would help bring about change or greater scrutiny to the problem.

Actually in an eerily strange way I think it is similar to your comments and reviews on the SWACPAGE about the SWAC Office and its leadership, especially Mr. Vowels. Honestly, I could turn around and ask you the very same questions

Why do you call our SWAC leadership out of their names and mention things that you believe to be wrong about the SWAC office in a public forum?

What do you hope to accomplish when you lodge your complaints and call people out of their names on the SWACPAGE site?

Think About It!!

Just Curious!!

What did he hope to accomplish?

Seriously, that is really a good question. I would like to know that, myself.

EB,

I am not one who likes airing our dirty laundry. But the issue of facilities at HBCUs must be address. And ......

True. I must admit I was really intrigued in regards to his comments about returning 20% of "Classic" money to the football program. I must admit I have always suggested this and support this idea. In my opinion, this is the main reason the larger HBCU programs have been so successful. They actually reinvest their athletic department revenue back into the program and then later the provide an allotment from that money to the school capital facility improvement program.

Not that Get Ready needs me to answer for him, but I think I can.

There's a helluva difference between John Q. GetReady talking about the SWAC leadership on a message board and Doug Williams, former NFL quarterback and head coach at Grambling publicly commenting in the media about the shortcomings of his supposedly beloved alma mater. Doug's comments wreak of sour grapes to me and could be considered burning bridges.

He should have just gone about his business and perhaps sent a letter to Dennis, the Gram pres, Clausen, etc. That would have been the professional way to handle it.

PNeck019,

This is very true. My friend I know Get Ready and certainly you my friend are no Get Ready and further more you are correct he does not need you or amnybody else to answer for him. :)

Intriguing you are assuming that Get Ready is not influential among his peers. I respectful disagree. I will give Get Ready that much credit. He is respected among his peers. He should be for what he brings and has brought to this site. That is saying something in my opinion. In fact one of the Board is dedicated in his name. I see you do not feel this way.

I really do not have a problem with this viewpoint. It would be a solid way to handle it to send a (second) follow-up letter to Dennis and a lter Clausen, as well.

1) I would suggest that the sports world more than not athletes and those with-in the sports administration circles often times play many things in the media airwaves. That is apart of business those that know how to use to their advantage the best are usually the big winners.

A newspaper article can be written to any slant the writer wants it to. That's why I'm always interested in direct quotes. PLEASE go back and read that article and see the quotes attributed to Doug. No where did he bash Gram. Do we not agree that Gram's facilities (just like everybody elses) can stand some improvement? Is it such a crime that Doug would have wanted a full staff or to have more $$ for the football program?
I guess the problem some folks have is that Doug mentioned those things. How dare he give his opinion about why he would leave Gram? Maybe he should have just lied and said everything was 100% wonderful at good ole Gram.
c'mon people, get real and stop being so small-minded and sensitive.
Heck, if anything, what Doug said can be used as a catalyst to rectify those things at Gram (the facilities, the coaches, the $$ for the football program)

PNeck,
I agree about there being a whole lot of difference between the rantings, ravings and bashings of a poster on this forum and Doug bashing Gram (although IMO, he didn't bash Gram)

However, I TOTALLY disagree that Doug should have quietly gone away and just wrote a letter to Gram administrators. With that route, do you actually think the administrators would have acted on any of those concerns, seeing how they apparently failed to address them anyway, which caused him to leave?

Trust me, administrators aint so quick to sweep "public" dirt under the rug. They'll have to respond to it, if nothing else. However, that "private" dirt, will get swept under the rug with a quickness.

I find it real ironic as well as amusing to hear someone from Grambling criticize Doug about tact now :smh:

There was an effort by alumni members.

Mike Woods, chairman of the ULS, confirmed that he, ULS President Sally Clausen, state Rep. Rick Gallot, and board members Andre Coudrain and Walter Rhodes would fly to Tampa for a 3 p.m. meeting.

Gallot and Rhodes are both Grambling grads.

SOG you and I both know that they aren't the heavy hitter's, meaning that they really have no clout just name recognition and didn't have the backing or full support of the alumni.

A state representatave and a board member of the ULS are not heavy hitters?!?!....They have no clout?!?! What more do you need?

Now granted there are differences of opinion about Doug's departure (as it is evident in this thread alone among GSU supporters), those who wanted Doug to stay (Gallot and Rhodes) did what they could with the little time they had to work with. The Bucs GM wasn't just going to meet with anyone. You have to have some kind of clout to pull that off.

I'm talking about within the GSU alumni base those two weren't running anything and had no clout to sway those from the inside to prevent this from happening because the truth be told most wanted it and doug has nobody to blame but himself for the departure.

He didn't get what he wanted because they "didn't" want to give it to him.

I dont understand why he was asking for this during the sac going ons.let warner do her job and then you come in in a respectful manner and state your problems.he wanted to go over her head .that's why they probably had to drag her and dennis on that plane to tb.this is the swac and not the sec .there are no 60 k stadiums of our own . we have been successful w'o alot of thing sas a conference asnd yet we still send quality players and individuals to the league an out into the world.i don't mind soemthings happening ,but this outlandish stuff need to stop .they need to get a new scoreboard if anything at all.let the practice be the practice field.they need to be tryign to put some fieldturf on that playing field.many issues need to be addressed first.
