NEW ORLEANS -- In the end, the frustration Doug Williams felt at Grambling State overcame the love he had for his alma mater.

Williams, who once called his job as the Grambling football coach a dream come true, said that exasperation over the school's inability to deal with the program's needs made him receptive to a job offer from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

WOW!!

Intriguing and many posters wants to but so much of the blame on the SWAC office. Yea right. Honestly, it really goes further up the latter than the athletic director. Although, I must add he should have at least replied in an update to Coach Williams.

We need to get our own campus institution's house in order and this includes Prairie View A & M University until the last 2 to 3 years when we finally made a commitment to athletics as well as academics.

I can only say that Prairie View A & M University has more work to do in the process and from everybody that I have talked and currently work with on this issue have every intention in continuing the commitment and process.

Thankfully, I must add.

You're talking about seperate issues. Whatever the situation might be in the individual institutions, the SWAC executives still have a responsibility to help this conference reach its true potential. As of now, that's not what's happening. Ineptitude(whether there is or not) at individual universities doesn't absolve the SWAC head officers of their responsibility.

BTW, I can't speak for other school's situations, but things are definately on track at JSU.

As for Doug Willaims, right now we're only getting part of the story. I'm not going to start calling out GSU's AD just because Williams didn't get all of the things he wanted. Despite their success and reputation on the field, I think he forgot that he was coachign at a small D-1AA school. You work with what you have or you move on. But if you do choose to move on, don't leave on a sour note.

Pete Richardson has been making the same complaints for the last 7 years. It is hard to stay ahead of the game when you do not have the facilities that you need. Programs catch up to you. I would not be surprised if Pete decided to pack and go somewhere. They need to listen to these coaches, they know what they need to win.

Agreed, however Kerr does not want to lose Pete that way. I'm more than sure Kerr is doing all he can to make sure SU's facilities are better than they are and were when I was there in the early 90's. Seems like the Jag Athletic Foundation needs to take a couple of pages from the Tiger Athletic Foundation(LSU) and go from there...

I respectfully disagree. The facts remains that the Presidents of each SWAC institution is the defacto President and CEO of the company (i.e. Prairie View A & M University). They sit on board that elects one of their own to act as the Chair of the SWAC Board/Presidents for a period of time.

The truth is depending on the make-up of each school even the President and CEO must anwser to their individual Board of Trustee/Directors on various issues. The SWAC Office is only a function of a Business Unit with set directions from the SWAC Board of Directors/Presidents.

The course of directions is general set by the SWAC Board of Directors/Presidents. They like any Business Unit have the automony to some degree to set their own course on how to solve, generate revenue, and/or the set goals issued by the SWAC Board of Directors, but it better cover the goals/planning (Strategic plan initiates) set by the SWAC Board of Directors/Presidents. Of course their meeting to address and suggest neccessary (next step issues) changes to the SWAC Board of Directors/Presidents.

I think the AD should at least addressed the man request, but we also must be realistic here. I don't believe there is a SWAC member school out there that has the money as of yet to get to the D1 level from a facility perspective and Louisiana D@@@ sho that about to give them that kind of money. That is where that SWAC conference comes into play. Come up with ways to create more classic games in larger cities to generate income. Playing a nine game mandate doesn't solve the problem. Market the conference. Get deals with Nike or whomever to sale jerseys from each school. Solicit the Hip Hop community (Rappers, R&B) to wear the jerseys in videos. Think outside the box...

Bengal E,

Thanks for the link. It is an excellent article. I don't know this Dr. Clausen's politics but I do love the way she went to bat to try and retain Doug. I love her comments about using Doug for recruiting and the way she understood those intangibles that he brought to the table. It just disturbs me that the administration at Gram in particular and the SWAC in general cannot think out of the box like this lady. I really hate the way that all of this went down.

If this was the case, I wonder what lies Doug was selling to all those recruits he just signed.

A month ago he was probably telling these kids Grambling was the best place for them to play. Now he is basically saying that Grambling is severly lacking in many areas.

We ALL have issues that we wouldn't dare tell a recruit about. Notwithstanding those issues, we all still think that our school is the best place for recruits.

Who knows what Doug said.

As Gram's HC, Doug was rightfully telling the recruits that Gram is the best place for them.

I think lots of times we tend to hold coaches (and/or players) to unrealistic standards, that we wouldnt hold ourselves to.

Just think, if we are unhappy with our job and in the market for a new one, that doesn't mean that we're expected to not do our current one.

I think it is smalltime to dog your school out once you leave it. If Doug bit his toungue about this stuff in the past he should have stayed quiet. All he is doing is making those recruits think they have been bamboozeled.

I have to agree with this.
