PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas ? Roderick Riley, a four-year letter winner at Prairie View A&M University and key component in the school?s 2003 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship, has signed a contract with the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association.

Riley, a 6-11, 327 pound center who graduated from Prairie View with a bachelor?s degree in Architecture, spent time with two overseas clubs and the United States Basketball League after his collegiate eligibility expired. He spent one season with Vozko Voznesensk (Ukraine) and a season with Regionalliga-North-team SV MBC Halle (Germany) and played with the USBL?s Pennsylvania Valley Dawgs. This past summer, he participated in the Memphis Grizzlies? summer camp.

?I?m getting the opportunity to live out a lifelong dream of mine,? said Riley. ?I have been given a chance that millions of people dream about, it?s truly a blessing.?

The Beaumont, Texas native had an impressive collegiate career at PVAMU from 1999 to 2004. In 2003 he was named second team All-SWAC, averaging 11.3 points per game, to go along with seven rebounds per game. In 2004, he received Honorable Mention honors after averaging 9.5 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game and shooting 46 percent from the field, ranking second on the team. Riley currently ranks 15th among all-time rebounders at Prairie View with 646 boards.

?I look forward to making an impact with the Atlanta Hawks in whatever way possible,? said Riley. ?My advice to all of the current athletes at Prairie View is to keep your heads up and put forth 110 percent effort in the classroom and on the playing field. You never know where it might lead you.?

I wouldn't go that far to say all that (wasn't basketball team ranked in the top 10 for worst teams of all time on ESPN). Unless he has drastically improved, Riley won't be there long.

jealous ones envy......

name the last SWAC Player to even sniff the NBA? Helicopter? :lmao:

jealous of WHAT.... hell YOU dogged him out more than I did. You know Riley sorry as hell... he couldnt dominate the SWAC, imagine him against Shaq lol I dont think he ever scored more than 10 points on us... he always came in and got 3 fouls in the first 5 minutes then ended up fouling out.

When I saw PV posted this, I was at least thinking/hoping Burkes was the one then when I see a picture of Big Bird on the thread I couldnt do nothing but laugh.

obviusly, someone thought of him to even give him a shot.....TSU had a 6-11, 350 guy ride the bench for 4 years..

not bad for a guy who only played 1 year of high school hoops

boy, remind me never to share info about my blessing or dreams with you guys. just negative. I would think all of you would be happy that this young man from the swac is getting an opportunity to prove his talent in the nba. instead it didn't take 3 clicks of the mouse b/f you tried to dose the flame of hope. personally I hope that he does well and is able to carry the swac banner. it has been awhile we've had a new head in the league. what? bobby phils. so back off this man. just say good luck if you can muster that.

You shole is right, Dahill. Did Riley even make the 1st Team All SWAC?

yall can sugarcoat the situation if you want.... if you sorry you are sorry...

a 6'11 player couldnt dominate the 6'7 centers in the SWAC..... yall tryin to sound politically correct... Im just tellin THE TRUTH.

You mean that guy who left and went to Univ. of Texas ?

yeah...and came back.....

I guess reading ain't fundamental....if you see...he went somewhere else after he finished playing and the Grizzlies saw something in him....now the Hawks see something in him...

some people blossom late....

as great as Obie Trotter is doing...is he NBA material? giards are dime a dozen

Yes I honestly do think so.... and I think he will sign as a free agent somewhere... but He WONT be SWAC POTY this year.... he wont even be AAMU's leading scorer. Obbie is a great OVERALL player though.

I hate to say it, but I gotta agree with them AAMU folks. that dude was sorry. Maybe he got some real coaching and has improved 500% (only thing I can thing of) or they want someone in camp that will build the confidence of the other post players.

this isn't about TSU..I mentioned there were several 6-11, 350 pound post players in the SWAC who had the same chance as Riley but he made the most of his opportunity. Eddie Stewart was the most recent one besides Riley.

again...reading ain't fundamental...he played elsewhere before being signed....he caught someone's eye

and Jerome Francis (former coach) and the D. Hawkins gets credit for his development also....they pushed him to lose weight and he spent two summers ago in some kind of camp to get in shape.

when Riley came to play, he came to play.....

PV produces another productive person

I'm happy for alum. First, because he recv'd his degree and he understands how important that is. Secondly, because he's doing something that I would hope he's dreamt of.

In all seriousness, I would've thought that Burkes or Thurston would make it. Those attitudes were questionable but their athletic capabilities were . lol That was a nice blend of players on that squad. Well rounded.

No Sir.

Ryan McGinty, Jr., you said Monday at 7:59 pm:

Then, you came back today at 10:00 am and said:

Where are the several 6-11, 350 pound post players in the SWAC you supposedly talked about? It's always a Texas Southern or southern issue when it comes to you. :smh:

Y'all know in sports there's two things you can't coach, size and speed. The Hawks want to compete in the East, and they need an extra body to bang with Shaq. Riley will come cheap and give them those six fouls and minutes (if he makes the roster).

I fondly remember heckling Riley, callin him "Fatboy Riley" and singing it like Hotboy Ronald. "Walk like Riley, Fatboy Riley."... :jump:

Congrats to Riley, I hope he makes the active roster..
Burks was an absolute BEAST

Regardless of what the kid did in the SWAC, there are such novel concepts called determination, preserverance, and improvement. Obviously this kid has made the most of his time overseas, and in the USBL that someone is willing to give him a look.

Some of these kids that play in the SWAC are poorly coached, and aren't put in situations where they can develop properly. I'm pulling for the kid, as I would think the rest of you would. If anything y'all should be pulling for him, because he decided to persue his dream, and not give up on basketball.

The Hawks are not an elite NBA team, but yet in still they're still a NBA franchise, and this kid must've shown something, because every kid that's 6'11 or taller doesn't get that opportunity, whether coming out of college, or after playing in another league. Especially coming from the SWAC.

I'm just glad FAMU's Jerome James didn't give up his dream, and decided to preservere, and look where he's at today.

Lord knows there are too many 6'10 - 7'1 stiffs in the NBA collecting checks, and not worth a dayum, so why shouldn't this kid get that chance whether he's a stiff, or not.

NICE

TSU had one....SU had a 7-footer two years ago..Jackson State had a 6-11 and a 7-footer in the late 90s on the same team..GSU had 6-11 Thomas Dodd.....Alcorn had a 6-10 guy last year, Alabama State had a 6-11 center in 2003...need I go on?
