DAYTONA BEACH — Alvin Wyatt, who won more football games than any other Bethune-Cookman University coach, was awarded nearly $771,000 because the university breached his contract after it fired him in 2009, a judge ruled Wednesday.

The university fired Wyatt, now 65, two days after the Florida Classic, when the Wildcats suffered a 42-6 defeat to their archrival, Florida A&M. He was replaced by Brian Jenkins, then 39.

B-CU paid Wyatt his $95,000 salary until June 30, 2010, but his contract called for payments to continue another four years, Circuit Judge Terence R. Perkins ruled.

Wyatt had sued for $1.2 million. But the judge wrote that age discrimination, as alleged by Wyatt, was not proven, saying the coach provided “not a shred of evidence” of a discriminatory motive on the part of former President Trudie Kibbe Reed.

Pete Heebner, one of two Daytona Beach attorneys who represented Wyatt, said the coach was “vindicated” by the ruling.

“Obviously we were quite pleased with the result. Portions of the award were reduced by the court, and that's OK. It's up to the court,” Heebner said. “We were disappointed the age discrimination claim didn't have traction with the judge. Those are very difficult cases to win, as I have found in most instances.”

The coach declined comment Wednesday evening. Heebner said Wyatt, who served briefly as defensive coordinator at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville last season, wants to return to the game. “He doesn't want to retire, but (the ruling) gives him some financial security. This will help,” Heebner said.

Good for Shine. I like ole Wyatt.

I said in our private forum last year when we were looking for an OC, that we should have called Wyatt to install that Wyatt-bone offense at JSU. With the RBs we have now, he would be a great addition to our staff... except that he old.

LOL. I wouldn't mine Shine either. But he is 65. Him and Pete played together in Buffalo so I know they are the same age. Shine definitely could help the running game at SU. But he seems to prefer being a defensive assistant. His defenses were pretty good too. Big Worm used to work for Shine. He can come in as a consultant. LOL.

I give Jenkins a lot of credit for what he has done at BC-U but miss Wyatt too.

Jenkins inherited a program that Shine had built. He left him some good players and a program that he took out the shambles and built up. Shine just got stubborn at the end and couldn't always find a Qb to run that Wyatt bone to perfection. He did put some folks in the NFL and he got some good transfers. But Jenkins walked into a situation made much better by Shine.

Schools could learn from JSU.

All these big azz settlements.
JSU fire you azz, you getting that years salary and $50 grand. Ain't gonna be no 6 and 7 figure payouts / judgements for us to tell a mofo to hit the road.

Let's just be honest here. We were only able to do that because Comegy's back was against the wall. No one else was about to hire him at what JSU was paying and due to the APR, no SWAC Championships, probation, etc... he was lucky to keep his job at JSU. Now, after going 24-10 (71%) in the last 3 years and a trip to Bham, he might have more leverage the next time he is given a contract. On top of that, just out of respect, they will have to give him a better contract. The last extension was given under some very bad terms and he accepted it because of those terms. Any new coach would tell JSU to kiss their azz. No one is going to take a job with no job security when they have other options. Comegy had no other options.

Boooy you stoopid :lmao:

He looks just like one of the Whispers too.

Blue, you remember how we were going at it with Shine's relatives in Jacksonville after we beat them in 06? I think one of them was from Houston. I bet they give Shine a call for some money now. LOL.

But I can gurantee you the next coach will have a "cap limit" on those walking papers.
In these cost cutting days, Administration is not blind to all these settlements being handed out.

It may be a little more than $50 grand but I'll gurantee you it won't be no $400, $500, or $600 grand payouts. Doubt after what is owed on a contract will hit 6 figures.
