It may be a little more than $50 grand but I'll gurantee you it won't be no $400, $500, or $600 grand payouts. Doubt after what is owed on a contract will hit 6 figures.
The state of MS helps us out by limiting the contract terms to 4 years. Most of those large payouts are due to the length of time left on the contract. That is pretty much standard language in most coaching contracts.
Let's just be honest here. We were only able to do that because Comegy's back was against the wall. No one else was about to hire him at what JSU was paying and due to the APR, no SWAC Championships, probation, etc... he was lucky to keep his job at JSU. Now, after going 24-10 (71%) in the last 3 years and a trip to Bham, he might have more leverage the next time he is given a contract. On top of that, just out of respect, they will have to give him a better contract. The last extension was given under some very bad terms and he accepted it because of those terms. Any new coach would tell JSU to kiss their azz. No one is going to take a job with no job security when they have other options. Comegy had no other options.
All true except this: IF Comegy is awarded a new contract, the terms will be similar. He still has no leverage, the FAMU debacle proved that.
You also have to factor in Damages and Attorney Fees in these breach of contract cases. That can push the total payout well beyond the actual face value of the contracts.
True but from what I have seen, they only get the terms of the contract. I have never seen any money given for damages at an HBCU.
Are attorney fees the concern of the university being sued? I think the lawyer is paid from the amount awarded. But you are the lawyer here, I don't know.
