Third and Long: I-AA history in the unmaking
by Tony Moss, Executive Director of I-AA Football
....
Alabama A&M (6-2) at Jackson State (4-4), 2:30 - While Grambling is busy making a mockery of the SWAC Western division race, three teams continue to fight for the right to knock off the G-Men for the league title in Birmingham on Dec. 14th. Foremost among that group is Alabama A&M, which under first-year head coach Anthony Jones has erased the remnants of last year?s 4-7 record by bolting out to a 4-0 mark in league play. Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs disposed of rival Alabama State (23-20), effectively eliminating last year?s Eastern champ from contention. A&M had just 209 yards of total offense, but capitalized on six ASU turnovers to come away with the win. Now it?s off to Jackson State for Jones and company, with the Tigers (2-2 in league play) looking to keep themselves in the hunt for the division crown along with A&M and Alcorn State. JSU has not suffered from a lack of offensive productivity, as Robert Hughes? charges average 29.9 points per game behind the right arm of quarterback and "Payton Watch" member Robert Kent (2553 yards, 20 TD). Kent will have to continue his proficiency against an Alabama A&M defense that leads the SWAC in total defense (274.1 yards per game). Despite Kent?s presence, the Bulldogs? less-than-stellar offense, and the fact that A&M has never defeated Jackson State since joining the league in 1999, I?m going to hop on the Bulldog bandwagon and predict a win for Jones? crew. The Tigers have not beaten a team with a winning record this year, and I see no reason to expect that trend to be reversed this week. Alabama A&M by a touchdown....

AAMU, along with GSU, will eventually bring respect to this league. People outside the league have no hesitation about jumping on the bandwagon. This guy sees good things for AAMU down the road.

Who in the league other than GSU has beaten a team with a winning record or a respectable team?

 Just wondering.

Bama State had a winning record, and had beat a respectable team in JSU, before we beat it in the MCC.

We will see if the experts are really experts after this weekend.

Good for him but this game will ONLY be decided on whether or not JSU can hold on to the ball and make AAMU make 50 yard drives. JSU by two TD's.

I don't know (and don't care) who will win between A&M and JSU, but for the record, Tony Moss (author of the above article) is anything but an "expert". "Idiot" would be a better description.

If you read most of his ramblings, you'll understand why. This has nothing to do with his picking A&M over JSU. Who knows, he may actually get it right this time.

Experts picked Alabama State to beat UAPB.....

bro the game will be decided on the field....Just go gas up....and BRANG THAT ARSE. A&M is about to take 2 BACK to BACK Mississippi FOOTS in the ARSE. :D

SWAC EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Ay Braves, We're gonna do our part. Make it happen. ;)

Deuce hit the nail on the head

For once I absolutely, unequivocally, without a doubt, word for word agree with Deuce.

No more need be said...

The man picks AAMU to win, and now he is not considered an expert. What, I might ask, will he be when AAMU wins the game?

Deuce:
I know we kicked you BumbleBees into a state of apathy during the MCC, but I thought the Bees would be out of it by now.

BCSP Picks AAMU over JSU

Two races head to final week

PREDICTION: All L. C. Cole's Hornets can do now is play spoiler for Grambling, a role he's sure to relish. But the Hornets don't have enough mustard. GSU 48, ASU 28.

SWAC East leader, Alabama A&M (6-2, 4-0 SWAC E) is at Jackson State (4-4, 2-2 SWA E) trying to eliminate the Tigers from the division race. JSU has struggled against teams that pressure QB Robert Kent and A&M may be the best at it in the SWAC.

PREDICTION: A&M 24, JSU 20.

JSU: No one besides the Mafia believes that you will beat the Bulldogs. Everyone can't be wrong about this outcome.

The man was not considered and expert by me (and I assume Deuce) before the beginning of the season. Ever since I've been reading him, I knew he didn't know what he was talking about especially for BCF and SWAC. He's more of a MEAC'er to me, but he doesn't know them well, just better. Shoot, he could've picked JSU to win a million to negative 1 and it still wouldn't hold any credibility to me.

As for what he will be when (if) AAMU wins the game, He'll just be another person who made the right choice. L, my 8th grade son could take an Advanced Calculus test and get two questions right, but would that make him an expert? Not to me...just another person who made an educated guess is all.

But if he's an expert to you...fine.

A prediction can be 100 percent wrong. I am sure that when TxSo played Stillman, everyone picked TxSo. I am sure that when A&T played Central, everyone picked A&T. Who cares? I know how the teams match up and unless you have at least a 4-5 turnover advantage, you won't win. JSU will have to beat JSU. I still can't believe that LC did not just run the clock out in Bham. You just have to hold on to the ball and stop A&M from making too many 20-25 yard drives. If I were the coach. I would only run the ball if I am deep in my own territory and make sure they held on to it. Punt it because you know AAMU can't move the ball 20 yards, let them punt it back when you have better field postion and go to work. The key to this game is to force AAMU to make 50 yard drives or better.

That has been the strategy all of our opponents have tried to implement. The problem is that they underestimated the ability of our offense to move the ball at critical times, and the ability of our defense to put the offense in favorable situations.

The BumbleBees felt the same way you do, and said the same things about our offense. I told them that our offense was competent at running our kind of plays. I now tell you the same thing. Your defense has not stopped anyone all year. I doubt that it will be able to completely shut our offense down.

Causing fumbles is a part of the game. It is a specific intent of our defense to initiate the fumbles. Your team can't stay away from the turnovers because, as I tried to explain to the Bees, the turnovers were caused by our defense, not the opponent's offense. They acted as if each interception or fumble could have been prevented if their offensive player had not screwed up. They completely ignored, as you are doing now, that our defensive man was in position to intercept the pass, or intentionally strip the ball from the offensive player.

We always have a chance because our defense makes plays, and our offense capitalizes on the turnovers.

Moving the ball 80 yards on each drive, but failing to get into the endzone, does not allow you to win the game. Your team's offense will not consistently score rom the red zone. Our defense is adept stopping drives in that area.

Succintly stated, your team will not win tomorrow.

Just curious....what do you think about your dayum experts now?

It is sad that I was 100 percent right. The only thing we did wrong was not kickoff to them first. If we had, they would not have scored 11 points. We have forced them to punt on their first possesion and had the ball on our 30-40 yard line. Gave would have been over right there.

I think JSU got lucky because we did not kick a field goal on the next to last drive. The expert will be right next time.

Uuuuh, our defense knocked you out of field goal range. This is sad. What you should have done was go for the field goal on first down when you got inside the JSU 30 yard line all game long. But you tried to do something you couldn't. Move the ball foward. You crossed the 50 three times, Yes I counted and two of those times you made it to the 45 and got penalties that moved you back across the 50. So really you only crossed the 50 once and that was on that long pass.
