Help me out here...............I'm trying to think of an HBCU quarterback making it in the league coming from a run-based set offense.........From what I have read in the past, scouts think an HBCU quarterback has to put up twice as many passing yards as his Division I counterpart to even get noticed.

True, stats do get you noticed, but they have very little impact on draft placement. A lot of QBs with nice stats and paper credentials have been passed over by the pros. (Ken Dorsey, send help.)

For example, Kent's yardage and TDs during his sophmore and junior years raised a lot of eyebrows, but surely the picks and fumbles did as well. Arm strength, mechanics, and most importantly game management skills are the meaureables that make the difference between high-round picks and free agent (project) signees.

Man, you have to remember who you're talking to. Mighty Hater flip flop more than sandals at a beach. His hate have him saying things that really contradicts himself real badly, but he dont care. He just finds pleasure in putting JSU down in any way possible.

Not to mention, you have talented players giving half arse efforts because they realize it is stupid too.

MH, these boys didn't give up b/c of Bell, they gave up b/c that's their mentality. They liked Hughes and staff because they would blow a lot of smoke and kiss the players' azzes. When they saw that Bell wasn't doing that, they rebelled. They just didn't have the discipline to adapt. This is the attitude they took on under Hughes. Go back and look at Hughes' comments after the TnSU game from 2001, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

We recognize that Bell is partly responsible for last season, but we know what he can do to remedy the situation: get rid of dead weight like Torey Ross........imagine if Keyshawn Johnson or Terell Owens ran their mouths all the time and didn't produce! We have a lot of guys like that and we are weeding them out, only thing is those guys aren't as talented as Torey Ross. We will be fine in 2004.

Not true. Many of us have criticized Bell for mistakes he made this past season.... we simply don't see the need to air displeasure in an open forum. Plenty of yall do that for us.
But you gotta understand, the ONLY comments we see are the ones in the open forum. And in the open forum, more often than not, yall don't criticize Bell for anything. It always come back to Hughes or the players. Trust me, I can understand about holding back in an open forum, but at the same time, when folks will argue against whats so obviously clear, then some of you all come across as, um less than genuine.

You're right. I don't have a problem distinguishing between right and wrong. So, I would agree that players not giving their all is wrong. At the same time, I'm not foolish enough to believe that the players themselves are not clued in to whats going on. For goodness sake, what 18, 20 year old would be reasonably expected to continually give it all when you're up against a brick wall. I don't profess to know the HALF of what was going on there, but I do recall some of the stuff that was in the paper and the headstrong, "my way or go to hell" type attitude of your coach. IMO, that is not a good recipe to get somebody to buy into something new, especially when it aint working. Not smacking, but just think, in the very first game, a newly installed offense didn't even cross the 50 (against a team that had a whole lot of new starters on defense).

Can you understand what I'm saying?

and Hughes aint never hurt nobody. Don't know why yall hate him.

Mach, make yourself useful and find out who wrote this terrible sentence....then see that they get fired. Maybe you can handle that aspect of football.

The Grambling State offensive line enters the 2004 spring workouts with all five starters returning including four of the five backups from the 2003 season.

...Bell just gets a free pass.

LOL. Trust me dude, Bell gets no free passes in Jacktown. The man can't sit in a restaurant without catching hell. You'll never have to worry about the the 'friendly' folks in Jackson being soft on coach.

Lemme put it this way, Bell has less and less of an excuse as each month passes under his tenure. At some point this team will be all his, and there's a line of folks around Jackson who won't hestitate to call him on that fact. And from the kind of talk I've heard from some the more fanatical fans, job status might be the least of Bell's worries if he doesn't turn things around quickly. Sad, but true.

But one thing's for sure. Regardless of whether Bell succeeds or fails on the field, the program will be in much better shape when he leaves than when he got here, and that's all I really care about. We've righted the ship in terms of mindset and in terms of off-the-field preparation, and the good that has been done behind the scenes is bound to manifest externally. Programs that do things the right way don't stay down for long, especially when the program has strong tradition at its foundation. I no longer worry about the program the way I did say, November 2001.

MH, just save some face and leave this thread. You've already turned this thread into smack with your weird sort of hate for JSU and now you're taking up for childish and immature kids. But I forgot, didnt you condone the window breaking incident that happened with Cole and his ex-players too?

Had I said that, they would have called me crazy...... Most people have no clue about what Hughes did. Truth be told, why do you think Torrey is leaving?? HUGHES and ASBERRY trying to destroy JSU and player morale.

So why did Tom Brady go so low in the draft?

True, and I was dissapointed when Bell came across that way, because I knew it wouldn't help the situation one bit. I think a portion of him saying the things he said was in frustration of the abuse he was taking both in the barbershops and yes, in the press, just for being where he was. No one forgot the way he was hired, and he was constantly reminded of that. Now part of me can't blame him for lashing out like that-- it's human nature to fight back when you're backed into a corner-- but the other 90% of me felt he should've been a bigger man than that and hold his tongue. It just wasn't smart to get into a feud with alumni and the mediathat fed it's ire.
Bell didn't hold his tongue, he paid for it, and he's still paying for it in the court of public opinion.

That brings me to the role the media played in the mess that was last season. Bell and our beat reporter, Mark Alexander, got off to a rocky start when Alexander placed a negative spin on some early articles concerning the offense. I'm sure yall remember Torrey Ross getting the spot light in a couple of those articles, including the one in which he made the irresponsible "hooptie with rims" statement. That was asking for trouble, although it seemed innocent. The tension was brought to a head after the NSU game, when Alexander lead-in his report with the "scouts leaving" jab. Well Mark was flat-out wrong for that because that 'report' more than anything else killed Bell's chances of having an effective season PR-wise. Bell understandably got upset by that; he just didn't handle it the best way.

Alexander has been a very good beat reporter for JSU, but last season he made the mistake of becoming more of a fan than an impartial journalist. That hurt us badly. The good news is that the two men appear to have improved their relationship, which should help Bell's PR this year.

mh,

Understand that NOT one of us is giving Bell a free ride in this. We just understand what's going on more than the rest of you, so we're giving him a chance to succeed. We knew there would be some player "casualties" and we all knew Torey would be the first and biggest. But the guys remaining don't wanna see a repeat of last year. Bell damn sure don't. He knows he handled last season badly. And he knows he has to turn it around fast.

Listen to HBCUs. He knows of what he speaks.

MightyDog,

Please don't act like Torey Ross is the first transfer in the history of college sports. The kid was not happy with Hughes' and Asberry's firing, and he wasn't happy with Bell. He made all kinds of comments in the paper. Y'all remember the "Cadillac to a hoopty" comment. That was Ross. He didn't wanna be at JSU and played like it. We don't need that.

I wish him well, again.

HBCUs said:
Nobody at JSU denies Ross' talent. But talent isn't the issue here.
The reason Ross drew the ire of so many JSU fans was the attitude he displayed for over a year. Instead of being a man and giving his all regardless of the offensive set he chose to take plays off and waste his talent when he really could've helped things. I can't begin to count how many drive-killing drops he had this year. And for the record, I blame Bell more for putting up with that kind of garbage for as long as he did than any set he ran or questionable play call.
Hell, I'd go so far to say this kid has more raw talent at this stage than Sylvester Morris had at a similar stage. The BIG difference, however, is Morris worked his azz off to continually get better to the point where his ability could no longer be questioned. Ross didn't, and I again say that if he maintains this pre-madonna attitude he won't be a success anywhere, 'cause no coach worth his salt is gonna put up with such foolishness. I don't care if he's 6'9" with 4.1 speed.

First, I don't smack here or on the Smack Page, so don't take this as such.
Having said that, let me ask these questions:

If the actions of this player were so open, why didn't Coach Bell dismiss him during the season, or at the very least, bench him? I can accept the claims you make about him being a cancer on the team (which in itself is unacceptable), so why not cut it out before it spreads?

First of all, I wouldn't say his actions were wide open, but they do make you think. It would be unjust to accuse him of foul play with no hard evidence. And his time did drop over the course of the season. He started as the #3 WR and ended #5 behind Michael Johnson and TE Kenneth Davis started lining up at the inside slot, where Ross was most productive.

To dismiss him in that situation would be grounds for a lawsuit. And I believe that Bell was willing to work with him, rather than dismiss him. He gave him a chance to be a man about the circumstances and he chose otherwise. I hope it all works out for him, but if it doesn't he cannot blame JSU.

This is what I keep asking myself???????? Why not cut the BS before it has a chance to fester and grow which in the end will destroy a team??????

dude just what are you talking about? You just say stuff for the sake of it. It's OBVIOUS that you NEVER add ANY valid point, EVER!!!! You can't move beyond what is put on the smack board and sooooo much over here go right over your head ALL the time.

again, go away. stick to small talk or something.

HBCUs, rob
I don't disagree with what yall are saying.
As far as the press, I'm not in the media's eye (well not since I retired from the NBA), but even I know that you have to tread very carefully with the press. You have to sell yourself and your message and that starts with good relationship with the press, especially the ones asssigned to cover you. What kind of coverage did Bell expect to get when he disses them and flips the bird to reporters. It's akin to how his players received his message.

but if all is well with yall, I'm happy for yall.

Did the scout(s) leave or didn't they? If the scouts did leave how is the reporter "flat out wrong" for telling the truth.

Big Dawg and Strawdog,

Good questions. Personally, I woulda benched him after the Northwester State game. I don't know how many 8-15 yard passes he dropped in that one. Coulda kept several drives alive, given our defense some rest and possibly gotten deep into Demon territory. This was immediately after running his mouth to Mark Alexander of the Clarion-Ledger. But Bell didn't wanna be mean to his players from that standpoint. Gave him all the chances in the world. Like y'all, I wouldn't have put up with it. Maybe Bell thought it would be one more PR nightmare if he ran him. Believe me, EVERYBODY close to the program figured Ross was gone after this year.

BTW, word is Torey will transfer to N. C. Central, where Asberry is now the OC.

...again, the only REAL difference here is that both LC and Coe have the same philosophy..Bell does not....who says that if Coe was a run first coach that he would not have done the same thing that Bell did? Wasn't Coe a WR coach??

Bama State had the most balance offense last year. I am almost certain that the run to pass ratio was close to 50%. I do know they had a very good rushing attack and guess what? They are returning for this year. What would you change?

Bell probably figured (and he was probably right) that it would cause some player unrest if he ran Ross during the season. Sometimes teammates can't see that a popular guy is causing problems on the team.

(I should know better but here goes):

A member of the SU staff and I were discussing the teams prior to last season. I commented that I thought SU's receiving corp would benefit from
more distribution of the ball. The coach told me that the team would benefit from the departure of Haynes and Joubert. He said that they had started out as quality kids but had become "communist" in the locker room. I told him that I was surprised that Pete would tolerate any such thing. He confided that the guys were veterans...meaning they knew how to be disruptive in subtle ways so as to make it difficult for Pete to really have much ammo. Finally, Pete called both players in and got in there azz for not being leaders. As some of you might recall, Haynes production picked up near the end of the season. But Pete could make such a move because of who he is and the success he has. Bell didn't have that "comfort level" last season.

I don't like to see players "tank it" during a game. They need to realize that the name on the front of the jersey is who they should be playing for.

I'm sure the scouts did indeed leave, but that's not the point of the argument. Alexander knew full well that such a negative lead-in would inflame fans who couldn't wait to clown if Bell messed up. I was no secret that a lot of fans had made up their mind about Bell 9 months earlier. What Alexander did was irresponsible given the level tension around Jackson. The man has been JSU's beat reporter for almost a decade, so surely he knew his audience and just what to write to bring things to a boiling point.

This wasn't the only incident of such careless journalism, just the most imflammatory. His analogy comparing Bell's offense to Asberry's offense and Lawrence Welk to Hip Hop music was fugged up too. Such 'creative writing' didn't help things one bit given the climate around town.

That incident was never substantiated. Some JSU 'fan' came on this board minutes after the A&M game and told that li-- um, story. As usual, folks saw the claim posted and ran with it.

No JSU person who attended that game saw this happen, even the ones who have no love lost for Bell. I for one didn't bother to refute the claim 'cause I saw no need in wasting my energy. People are gonna believe what they want to believe regardless.

The negative leadin about the Scout's leaving doesn't violate the spirit of good journalism. The Lawrence Welk/HipHop analogy was not in accordance with Journalistic integrity unless it was in an editorial. When journalist are reporting a story, they should report the story and TRY to limit putting their personal feelings into the body of work. Seems like this dude was trying to get his personal feelings in each piece of work.
