Ex-receiving sensation Ross to transfer

The on-again, off-again relationship between Jackson State football coach James Bell and receiver Torey Ross is off for good.

Ross, who was in and out of Bell's doghouse this past season, has elected to transfer to another school.

"I don't really know where I'm going to go right now, but I'm definitely out of there," Ross said Saturday afternoon. "I'm not coming back. I just think it's the best decision at this time."

Ross, a rising junior, missed a few offseason workouts and also didn't participate in the first three spring practices this week, leading to further speculation that the Provine alum would not return to JSU for his final two seasons.

"We wish him well in all his future endeavors," Bell said.

The 6-foot-4 Ross burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman catching 51 passes for 714 yards and six touchdowns in former offensive coordinator Darrell Asberry's pass-oriented attack. He was named SWAC Newcomer of the Year.

Ross' numbers and reps dropped this past season in the more run-oriented offense installed by Bell, however. He caught 36 passes for 498 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers struggled to a highly uncharacteristic 2-10 record.

Ross' absence leaves a void in JSU's receiving corps, which lost leading receiver Tim Manning to graduation. Chris Jones, the Tigers' leading returning receiver, is sitting out this spring while recovering from off-season knee surgery.

Tight end Courtney Rogers is not participating in spring practice while concentrating on academics, Bell said.

Jones, a rising senior, had 49 catches for 551 yards and one touchdown this past season. He had surgery on his left knee Feb. 16.

"They went in and shaved it and then they repositioned the kneecap," Jones said. "It had been hurting for two years, but they kept telling me it wasn't too serious. I knew it wasn't right, though. It was best to go ahead and have the surgery now so I would be ready for next season.

JSU practiced three times this past week in shorts and shoulder pads. The Tigers are scheduled to practice four times this week, weather permitting. JSU's first spring scrimmage is set for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on the main practice field. The spring game is April 17 at Newell Field.

I think Asberry is at N. C. Central. If so, Torey can go there and play immediately.

I wish him well.

I don't. I wish him the azz-beatin' he should've gotten last year when he was talkin' isht to the media, all while dropping balls and tanking plays on the field.

Clowns like Ross were a major part of the problem, and that attitude of his will ensure he'll never be isht.

Is this the same WR that caught for over 100 yds (mop up duty) against Gram (J-State's last visit and blowout loss to Gram)? He looked good in this one. Can J-State afford to lose his experience?

interesting....

Heard about this possibility before it happened. Just didn't want folks to get mad and call me names if I came forward with it. Ross is a good WR when he catches the ball. Hopefully he will find a team to compliment his skills.

Who's next?

I figured you'd be along. :wavey: Don't mean to disappoint you, but this is old news. This dude checked out a long time ago. Most of us are just happy he finally made it official.

A good WR when he catches the ball? Am I wrong or is that not his job.

GSUper,

We couldn't afford to keep him. He was among a few key players that was out there just to be out there and it showed in his play on the field. Not wanting to play for Bell hurt the team. He and a few other "player coaches" are gone. I'm sure Mike is just waiting to "break the news" to us, though. Just like he sat on the Ross info.

I say, "Good Riddance!" Let the door knob hit cha.........well, you all know the rest. I sat there and watch this guy drop so many passes in that NC. A&T game that it wasnt funny at all. And that Rogers cat. :shame:

Mike, we are so happy that you heard about it. Maybe you all can get him at Annie Mae. LOL The simple truth is, he was recruited for the run and shoot.

Mike, hopefully about 5 more are next. Just tell us who they are before it happens next time okay?? :)

Still should have fired the coach. This is just another sign of the upcoming disaster. JSU will play just about .500 ball and then end the Bell experiment. Meanwhile, all signs showed that he was incapable of the position early on. I guess Alcorn will enjoy beating you one more year. This is a very sad situation.

Great prediction.

James Bell is not going to have a bad season. You all have no clue about what JSU will look like in the fall. We will be running all of you off of the board in 2004. Only one team in the SWAC is even trying to play real football and it will pay off in the end.

Didn't I hear Asberry was at a Miss. Community College and some of the jsu players wanted to transfer to that school. Was Ross one of those players?

I know you don't believe the aforementioned statement.

P.S. Good job on your 2004 schedule. I like what you all have done.

If I didn't believe it, I would not type it JRock...also, you can't give anyone at JSU credit for the Hampton game. It just happened to fall into our lap after we could not play TxSO. Thank goodness Hampton had an opening or we would have been playing Miles or somebody.

Mach, yes Ross was one of those players. He wanted to leave this time last year along with some others. Ain't that right Mikey???

At least he FINALLY made a decision ............ want to be here/don't want to be here.

:wavey: :wavey: :wavey: :wavey: Good luck Ross. :nod2:

Now if 2-10 had taken the advice of Ross and Kent he would have won more games.

2-10 has a long ways to go to become a good headcoach.

What? Like "Superbowl Tightend" Jones took the advice of Tim Robinson?

Yep and he is still on the team. Now you tell me how a coach let a 6-4 WR get away? A coach must be able to outsmart a 19 year old student athlete.
