Doug Williams' Future At Grambling In Doubt?

Doug Williams may no longer be the head coach of the Grambling State Tigers.
KTVE Sports has learned that Williams, who is in his second run at his alma mater, will go into spring drills without a contract approved by the Louisiana State Board.
When Williams was hired last spring, he signed a deal with the president and then athletic director, but that contract was never sent to Baton Rouge for final approval.
Now, the board wants Williams to sign a "revised" deal that will bring it more in line with other schools within the University of Louisiana System.
That new deal is said to be 'less appealing' and it remains unsigned.
KTVE Sports has also learned that Williams and his staff have not been paid "performance bonuses" due to them because of the 'hic-cup' with the new contract.
Williams guided the Tigers to a SWAC Western Division Title, a SWAC Championship and a win in the Bayou Classic.

Let me make sure I understand this correctly. The writer states, "Doug Williams may no longer be the head coach of the Grambling State Tigers." But then says, "Williams, who is in his second run at his alma mater, will go into spring drills without a contract approved by the Louisiana State Board."

Which one is it? Hey Coach Williams, you sure you don't want to reconsider my interview request to set the record straight? Because to me this sounds like an attempt to get your supporters riled up to make calls to the GSU president and the ULS to put pressure on them to get you signed.

How about you just come out on record and state your position?

There are a ton of cutbacks at GSU I truly believe that is the issue and this is being blown out of proportion.

Kenn, why wasn't the contract submitted? Did you steal it out of the mailbox? LOL

Inquiring minds want to know.

Item F.1. was withdrawn at the request of Dr. Pogue, President of Grambling State University, and Items F.11. and F.12. are reports only.
F.1. Grambling State University’s request for approval of a contract with Mr. Doug Williams as Head Football Coach, effective March 1, 2011.
This item was removed at the request of President Pogue.

So the State doesn't want to give Doug that lifetime contract at Grambling?

Since UNO wants out of the LSU System for the UL System, Grambling should petition to be removed from the UL System for the SU System. I'm sure Southern's Board would sign that lifetime contract for Doug and we all know that the State is not creating a forth Board.

I guess it's time for a few midnight phone calls.

So the incendiary right wing factions on the ULS board has teamed with the subservient Grambling administrators and covetous alums to play with the legend and staffs money. What a repugnant and rancid act! Governor Kathleen "Babineaux" Blanco and the cavalry send help!!!

Seriously Doug has a lifetime contract but Dr. Pogue is not issuing him a blank check....ya dig.

Another dumb embarrassing statement by a Gramblinite. Pogue drew up the original contract that was signed by himself (Pogue), Dawson sorry azz, and Doug. Pogue failed to submit it to your daddy (ULS). Dumb shit. Somebody need to be slap.

I'm getting too soft. I should be laughing at this. Oh well. Gram, this is a bad look. C'mon man!

Was it not the 13th amendment that abolished slave labor? What kind of rural shenanigans and tomfoolery is going on in Grambling? Slick Willie..........Send help!!!

Some are saying the President didn't submit the contract to BR... I think that's inaccurate. The reason I say that is because I've read where the contract has "been rejected numerous times" by the ULS system. The reasoning that I'm hearing is because the salary is not in line (monetarily) with the salaries that ULS system pays for head coaches at other schools. This means that if GRAMBLINITES wants to keep Coach Williams, WE will have to come up with the money OURSELVES.

If you want to blame Grambling's administration (though not this President) for anything...blame them for rejecting the efforts of Kenn Rashad, Justus, Gram4Life, and others who put together a non-profit fundraising entity, approved by the State (legal documents filed and everything) that had gotten verbal pledges from inside (and outside) of the HOG to raise money that would go directly to the Athletic Department, specifically football.

We (all of us) must understand that in Louisiana, the sentiment is to cut spending in Education. Piyush Jindal ain't no fan or Grambling NOR Southern anyway...if he's cutting State Funding to LSU, then you know damn well he's gonna slash us as well. Unlike us, the other schools fund their own programs...academics and athletics. It's gonna take more than season ticket sales to offset the state cuts being made. We need major Alumni giving back campaigns and (Thanks Founder) more emphasis on getting funding for Research by our Academic body!

I say again.

Louisana has the most fugged up college system I have seen. Too many hands in individual college business. Outside of the College Board here in Mississippi, each school controls their own faith. As long as the I's are dotted and T's are crossed, the college board is not going to look in your direction. They take over when a PRESIDENT is being chosen.

Once a decision is made on a coach, the college board basically rubber stamps these hires. It is up to the school how much money they will pay a coach over what they give you in the budget. The only limit the college board set here is contracts can't run past 4 years before they come up for renewal.

At Mississippi State and Ole Miss for example, the state only pay those coaches $250,000. The rest of that $3 million plus salary comes from private donations. I honestly don't think Comegys STATE salary that comes out of JSU's budget even tops $100,000. The rest of that $165,000 come from private donations.

I guess Doug's 1 year run was great while it lasted then.

Hmmm.... Jindal is a dirty batch.

Tiger Family,

I'm forwarding the attached news flash to you, in order to keep you informed and educated on what's going on in our football program. I spoke with Dr. Pogue (University President) last week regarding this very issue.

Coach Williams does have a contract, but not approved by the ULS Board.

Per Dr. Pogue, La. governor Jindal has "changed the rules" such that bonuses and incentives that are due to coaches for winning certain games and championships will NOT come from state dollars.

In order to be "in line" with what other schools are doing, the expectation is that this money comes from the school's athletic foundation and alumni giving. I don't even have to tell you what position that puts HBCUs in. Dr. Pogue says he is working hard to get this issue resolved.

"In line"...... yeah, right.

Are our school's budgets "in line" with LSU's or La. Tech's budgets? Are we getting the billions that LSU and La. Tech are getting???

Are our facilities "in line" with the "other schools"??? Don't pick and choose, governor Jindal. Put EVERYTHING "in line".

In the True Tiger spirit,

Cathy D. Parks Conwright
GUNAA-Dallas Chapter President

Baptist preachers ofttimes say "If you can't say Amen, then say 'ouch' ". I'm gonna say Amen and Ouch! Amen because you're preaching truth and ouch because you're all over my toes, too!

Too long, we have allowed Grambling to be dependent upon what we've been given by the state. This is a wake up call, but we're continuing to hit the "snooze" button. Sleep on at our own peril.

Time for MB to step to the plate...$83.33 per pay period means $2000 to my alma mater. Yep... $1000 to Athletics and $1000 to College of Business (with 3 to 1 match from Exxon). I need my azz whupped, this should have been done on the regular a long time ago. Damn shame it takes Piyush putting his bony foot up our azz to wake me up!

The ULS minutes indicate, "Item F.1. was withdrawn at the request of Dr. Pogue, President of Grambling State University" That is not an indication of someone "failing" to send the contract. It was apparently tabled at Dr. P's request with the ULS fully aware of it. The question is why was it tabled?

Hmmm.... Jindal is a dirty batch.

That is the way it has always been here in Mississippi. If you want to pay your coach a $10,000 bonus for winning games and championships, you better call up the supporters and get the donations rolling in. The state of Mississippi is only going to allow a coach X amount of dollars out of the budget they set for each school. Once the budget is approved, the College board and State get the hell out of the way. How much money each school raise to suppliment that base salary is entirely up to each school.

Changing the rules mid-stream without warning is sneeky though.

Good points MB. That's how I read it too. The UL Board is not going to shell out the entire salary. So it will have to be subsidized with Gram alumni dollars. Kind of like what JSU is doing with Comegy. I think some of his money is funded by their alums. It is something I have said for awhile. Us HBCUs pay WAYYYYYYYY to much money for our Head Coaches. Them white boys who are winning at some of the bigger FCS schools aint making our coaches money. Just my opinion. I know we (SU) opened that pandora's box with Pete and that big salary. But it has gotten out of control. Our schools just can't afford it.
