Stepping Up
Highly touted QB recruit ready for fall challenge

Calvin Britt calls it the "man-step."

It's the moment a teenager makes a life-changing decision based on his own belief in what's best for himself. It's that first time he steps out of the comfort zone provided by parents or friends and accepts the risks and rewards of making an adult decision all on his own.

"We all have got to take that man-step," Calvin said.

Calvin watched his son, Domonick, step forward on Feb. 6 when he signed a letter of intent to play football at Jackson State. Domonick (pronounced Dom-oh-neek) was the star quarterback for Ohio powerhouse Trotwood-Madison and was offered scholarships by West Virginia, Illinois and Pittsburgh - and that was before things got interesting. In the weeks before signing day, a nationally reported competition between Michigan and Ohio State ensued as the schools wooed the nation's top-rated quarterback,Terrelle Pryor. At the same time, both schools told Britt that if they lost out on Pryor they'd have a scholarship waiting for him.

Britt said thanks, but no thanks, and gave the nod to JSU and offensive coordinator James Woody, who had been recruiting Britt - a three-star recruit (out of five) by Rivals.com - since his junior year.

"It was crazy," Britt said. "The week before signing day Michigan brought me down for an official visit. All those schools offered me, but they weren't really contacting me like Jackson State.

"Coach Woody, me and him built up a relationship. And basically, during that relationship I've always been number one. I wasn't going to turn down my number one school for somebody who wanted me to be their second choice."

JSU may have been Domonick's first choice, but it wasn't his father's.

"It was rough for me, I'm not going to lie," said Calvin Britt, who became enamored with Jim Tressel after the Ohio State coach paid a visit to their home. "It took a little bit getting used to the idea. The one thing that swung me in Domonick's direction was he felt Jackson State gave him the best opportunity to get his degree. And he didn't think he should be No. 2 to anybody.

"Domonick was making his man-step and I accepted it."

considering how the past freshmen QB's are no longer affiliated with JSU, such as Brack, if a transfer QB Comegy loves wants to come will this kid still have a scholarship even if he wait his turn and McKenna plays for two years along with an improved Rutland?

At the barber shop this past weekend some JSU alums were saying that McKenna dude has flunked out already and wont be on the team.

Well, the cat's now out of the bag.

This should help to answer the QB questions folks had and still have about JSU.

Hopefully he doesn't line up under the guard like ya'll starting QB.

V Lands will have him eating Memorial grass when its all said and done. :pimp:

I'm glad the kid is on campus and getting ready to play. Him getting here early tells me he's trying to do everything in his power to get on that field. If he doesn't, won't be from lack of effort. Besides, we've signed some prize recruits that never set foot on campus in the fall. That really gets old fast.

ummm, you can get all caught up into high school accolades if you want, but folks with the good sense (thanks rob) know otherwise.... :scared:

carry on though......

Britt seems to have his head on straight and seems to be from a solid family, which can't be measured.
He's focused on getting the starting job ASAP, which is a strong possibility if the others don't pull their load.

Seems like Woody pulled a coup on this one.

Dude always gotta fan the flames I see. Ain't posted all week on the sports board, but lo' and behold, when something positive is posted about JSU, here he comes with something negative to counter it.:smh:

huh?
go to the thread about the GA Dome, then the one about the black athletes being pimped by the NCAA, then the one about the SEC......etc.

Apparently, you don't have sense enough to realize that not every post about Jsu is some kind of smack.

 I guess the thread's author(a senior at provine) and tspns' resident intoxicated cebus albifrons (who loves kb24) missed that.

It's best that we found out about his attitude and lack of a work ethic sooner than later.

Seems like Woody had his eye on Britt for quite some time. Woody's THE MAN!!

I got a feeling Britt will take JSU places. Had the SAME feeling about Jimmy Oliver.

Seems like a solid kid and a good pickup. We like the two freshmen qb's we signed as well. There's a lot of talent at the qb position at Grambling this fall and lots of competition. Landers returns, his spring backup Dillon, the two freshmen and a well thought of transfer that we haven't decided to tell yall about yet. :swink:

Dudes from SU, JSU folks knew about Britt before this article!! It's you outside folks who didn't know, hence the phrase "cat out of the bag".

By the way, the smack board is over there ------->

Tillman. Yeah.... yeah... yeah... :swink:

The majority of SU could care less what's going on QB wise in Jackson or Grambling .... see, we don't have that problem. We are set for the next 2-3 years.

Good get on Britt though. The kid sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders and if he really passed those other schools for JSU, A LOT of people will be watching to see how is treated should a transfer sniff around JSU. If the kid is good, don't cfuk over him Comegy.

To quote a much used phrase....."WE GOT THIS!"
