Domed or Doomed: JSU's Plans for New Stadium

The idea behind a dome on either the school's campus or directly adjacent to it is for it to serve as more than just a football stadium. The study, done by national consulting firm B&D Venues, would have to host other events that included conference championship games, concerts, meetings, corporate events and banquets.
To reach the projected $400,000 operating deficit, B&D estimated the dome would have to generate a minimum of 63 ticketed events with a combined attendance of at least 343,000. The primary revenue stream would be JSU's annual $1.6 million lease payment.

WHY WOULD JSU PAY A LEASING FEE ON SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BELONG SOLELY TO THEM??

Re: Say What?

Man if that happens, then that's the definition of hustling backwards

Soooo somebody updated the thread and put jsu in the title to get a specific response from a specific group of people. Well, here's your attention.

Re: Say What?

$1.6M a year? And that would be the main source of revenue?
The financial arrangement is as it is with most projects like this... We have a separate entity within the JSU construct that will champion the build and operation of the facility and the university entity will make payments to it for its use. If any of you were as smart as you think I should not have to explain this!

This is more of a liability and financial arrangement!

So you telling us, Jackson State will own and operate the dome, but still have to pay rent?

That's no different than any of the other teams (NFL, NBA, MLB) that operates the stadium they play in but also pay rent.

not a good deal for a SWAC school  we don't make money like those kinds of leagues.

Beside the Cowboys Stadium or AT&T Stadium, most professional franchises don't own and operate the stadium they play in and I don't think the Cowboys pay rent to the City of Arlington, TX to play in AT&T Stadium. It sounds like someone is trying to pull a fast one to get a dome built.

Two things I've noticed in the article which I have said all along, the seating capacity has gone down while the construction cost has gone up. And it will continue to go up as more time is wasted on finding money to fund construction and operation. It has gone from a 50k seat arena with a price tag of $200 million to a 35k seat arena with a price tag between $250 million to $280 million. It would seem like Da Queen's PhD degree and real life EXPERIENCE in engineering would tell her that construction cost for large projects increases about 5% to 10% every year.

The study recommended a 35,000 seat, domed multipurpose complex on the school's campus west of downtown Jackson.

The estimated cost of construction lies between $250 million and $280 million. The dome's annual operating deficit would hover around $400,000. That's where the need for some kind of public financing would arrive.
