Does it really matter where you receive your degree from?


I think it may matter where you degree comes from, depending on the degree and your career background.

In my field (PR/communications/journalism), it absolutely doesn't matter (at least from my personal experience) where your degree came from as long as it's from an accredited university/college. In my field, it's more about that PORTFOLIO and maybe where you got that experience from.

These white folks up in here seem to be pretty uptight about my Black arse coming from an HBCU (Local at that) and makin' some noise. This one dude that has a Senior Title has been trying his best to get me upset or show me up. All he can do is come in earlier than me and stay later than me. I laugh and say "I'm Salary, I get paid up front for all that extra hours crap! Peace!"

According to most on this board, it is better to receive degrees from white institutions. You know white is right/better.

Also, the time spent at each location can be a plus. Most companies don't like to hire job hoppers.
 
Sir Gram, if you finish in the top 10% at any school that is what will make a big difference. Most employers are looking for the top 10, but if you enter school speaking poorly and conduct your interview like you never went to school you will in most cases not get the job. A degree get you in the door, but you have to make the most of the opportunity. I was on a panel that rated individuals and being 1 of 7 on this panel, all the candidates who graduated from HBCUs were rated at the bottom of the list, but I fought the other sixs and got the results thrown out and was successful in getting several of them hired. It cost me but I had tenure. When some of these folks were hired, they acted like they got the job on their own. However, you may be the person the company is looking for various reasons. I have been in many battles when it come to employment.

In my experience, 9 times of out 10 when companies are looking for 'us' they are not going to the Penn State's and Purdue's of the world? They are recruiting at SWAC, SIAC, CIAA, and MEAC schools. I use to tell my brothers/sisters at PWCs that all the time. They started to get it when they were graduating without jobs.

If a person is determined and willing to put in the work, you will get a great job. This site is an example of that.

NO! Just take your azz to a school and get your degree/degrees! I have yet to see a degree speak during an interview or perform on a job.

Sure. Sat in on an interview last week, and this lady was asked to do a writing sample. She had the nerve to ask for a pen and went on to say she didn't have one was because it was raining. We asked her if she knew anything about our agency and she said I only know what the job announcement stated. We asked why she didn't just go to our website and get specific information. She said no one told her she could do that. Asked her who is the current Governor of Louisiana and she said President Bush.

I was in a human resource office one day... *hint* and I heard some stuff worse than that. They needed a sample writing from an applicant, and the person asked if they could bring it back tomorrow. The lady was like Hell Nawl.. we want you to sit over there and write it in front of us and turn it in. The dude was like nah... I ain't got my glasses. The lady busted him out really fast.

"You ain't need no glasses for all the other paperwork you filled out!"

I scooted out the door because I didn't want to be all.....

Not lying. My Deputy Director stopped the interview and asked her if she really wanted to work here and why should we hire her. The woman seemed like anxiety had taken control of her throughout the interview. I don't know maybe she thought the question was who is the current President of the United States. When she came in the office the clerical person sat her across from me and I could tell something wasn't right about her.
